Pearls It Is!

January 12th, 2007 @ 12:02 pm by Mrs. Peach

While I was at home, I finally decided on my wedding jewelry! For the longest time before I even started looking, I debated whether or not I’d go for crystals or pearls. I was almost convinced I would stick to crystals, because I couldn’t see myself wearing a strand of pearls as my necklace. I felt that it would truncate my neck and make me look shorter. Plus, in Korean culture, pearls represent tears. So Mama Peach said back in her day, people never wore pearls as wedding jewelry. Of course times have changed… Oh and I dunno, I always imagined I’d have medium-sized dangly earrings and a simple necklace.

Anyhooooo! Over the course of two weeks I searched high and low for the perfect jewelry set, of course limited by my budget. In the end, I ended up with these two final contenders:

Contender 1:

jewelry 001

you can see better details here (these were on sale btw at Macy’s):

jewelry 010

Contender 2 (this is the style I had imagined prior to looking):

jewelry 002a

same necklace, different earrings (super great price from SteinMart):

jewelry 009

But thennnn BAM! Mama Peach remembered she had some jewelry that I might be interested in - she received like 10 different sets from her mother-in-law, aka Grandma Peach, back when she was getting married. (Yeah, TEN! can you believe it??) I saw the first set and knew it was the one!

I present to you, the winner:

jewelry 003apearl 005

jewelry 004

close-up:

jewelry 007a

It wasn’t what I expected - simple earrings and more elaborate necklace, or I should say pendant, but I likeeeyyy! And the pearls will be matching my BM’s jewelery. More of that to come later…

Are/Were you a pearls person or a crystals (cubic, diamonds, etc.) person? Or neither?

The necklace is beautiful! I really like it. My mother told me at one point that Koreans do not wear pearls before they turn 40 because of luck. I’ve been avoiding pearls because of this, but have seen so many that I really like.

But, I’ll probably be a crystal person.

Well, I plan on either having an all blue or all red dress (or at least, lots of color on a white dress, if I can’t find one I like)….so I’ll probably be either wearing ruby jewelry or blue sapphire, to match that….or just going with crystals…I’m not totally sure. But I’ve got time to figure it all out, so yeah…. :)

I was like you and had a hard time deciding whether I wanted pearls or crystals. As my mom and I were looking for my jewelry, we found the perfect set…and it’s crystal AND pearls. I absolutely love it!

Well, I always imagined I’d be a pearl girl. And I guess I kinda am, but it’s not your usual pearl. It’s a small, brownish-purple pearl with a gold cap over it (I blogged about it) making it look like an acorn. I love it, and it fits our theme perfectly. :)

Only my personal preference, but I always prefer real jewelry. I suppose CZ set in real gold would be ok, but I can totally tell the difference between a cheap CZ setting (that looks like costume jewelry or “rhinestone”) and real diamond in gold.

Since a real diamond (at least one with enough bling, lol) would cost way more than real pearls, I’d opt for pearls. They already have that same glow as the wedding dress, wedding dress + pearls = perfect match.

I think the set you are using is gorgeous! It’s so nice to have some family history in it too.

I’m not sure yet, but I just bought a warm ivory wedding gown, so I was thinking I might borrow my great-grandmother’s heart-shaped gold locket. My mother has it, and wears it often. I loved my Nana Lulu a great deal, and it would mean a lot to me to wear her necklace on my wedding day. My sweet fiance just gave me a lovely set of earring for my birthday today that I had seen in the new Martha Stewart Weddings in their article on pearls. They were prettier in the magazine than online, and they’re a lot prettier in person.

Hey, if Martha thinks they’re good enough for a wedding, then they’re good enough for me!

Haha Miss Peach, I am exactly in this position! You’ll def. have to tell me what you think when I finally get around to taking pics and putting them up here. I’ve decided on my necklace — a single pearl with tiny diamond accents on a plain chain — but I’m not sure whether to go with the matching pearl earrings or some other crystally ones that I bought a little later on down the line. Yours is gorgeous and I know you will look beautifully put together on your wedding day! :)

I don’t like pearls, personally, but I love costume jewelry. It’s not supposed to fool anyone into thinking it’s ‘real’, it’s just supposed to flash. :D Since the general feel of the wedding is 40’s glamour, I’m going rhinestone all the way!

Beautiful! I love pearls, but I wanted sparkly too, so I wore a pearl necklace and earrings and then in the front earring holes I had drop cubic zirconiums.

I wanted pearls. My mom had beautiful pearls, but my dress was all done in crystal beading.

So I had crystal and worked well.

For a wedding day, I like the idea of nothing being fake (jewelry, fur, hair…) Nice-looking pearls can be found at virtually any pricepoint.

Miss Peach — I LOVE the set you are wearing and wish I could buy something like it. Bonus that it’s “something old” and from your mom. (So is the set a loaner, then it’s also “something borrowed”?)

I really wanted to wear the pearl necklace my parents got me for my college graduation, but it doesnt look right w/my v-neck dress, bummed me out. THEN I thought maybe I could wear the pearls interwoven into my low chignon hairdo (sounds weird but I saw a pic in the new InStyle Weddings and it was beautiful!) but realized that hairspray + pearls = damage to pearls.

Anyways, Sticking to a dainty dangly pearl & marcasite earrings by Judith Jack and a gorgeous 3 strand pearl bracelet (from ebay!)

My grandmother recieved a beautiful strand of simple pearls on her wedding day as a gift from my grandfather, my mother wore them on her wedding day, as did my sister, so now it’s my turn to wear the pearls both as my something old and something borrowed.

My dress is very un-embellished (as in, not at all), the Whirlwind from Ulla-Maija, so in order to add some flash I’m wearing a tiara and b/c the pearls aren’t too flashy, it’s doesn’t say over flash or under. Just the right note! Yay!

Haven’t decided on earings yet. Perhaps crystal/pearls together if I can find them?

I too have a great heirloom to be my something old & borrowed in one! An antique gold & diamond necklace from the late 1800s, I blogged about a long time ago. Pics here -

So to answer the question - crystal!

And your pearls are so unique & sentimental, I love them!!

Pearls! I don’t know why but I’ve always envisioned them for my wedding.

Miss Emerald, if you want to wear pearls in your hair, you could check out a beading store, the usually sell freshwater pearls by the strand (~$10). Not the same sentimental value, but it’s ok to chance them being ruined.
