Bye Bye Engagement Ring

January 16th, 2007 @ 9:34 am by Mrs. Apple

I’ve had my engagement ring for almost 6 months, and I’m still not used to wearing it. I love my ring - I love the antique etching on the sides of my band, I love how it sparkles, I love how it makes me feel so gooood. But I’m scared, I’m scared that I might lose it. stunned

I’m worried that I might lose it either down the drain while I wash my hands, or maybe I might just flick my arm somehow and it’ll go flying into some random manhole. Though we have ring insurance, I’m still very paranoid that I’ll be careless and forget or lose it somewhere.

But I just realized that I don’t wear my ring often. I don’t wear it to work sometimes, I don’t wear it while working out (dirty handles on the weight machines and elliptical), I don’t wear it when I go to bed (does anyone?), I don’t wear it when I am at home because I’m usually either cleaning or just lounging around. Also believe it or not, sometimes I don’t even wear it out when I run errands. I think I spend more time not wearing my ring than actually wearing it! How strange. Maybe I should wear it more around the house, so I’ll get used to it being on my finger.

Two Questions:

Has anyone ever lost their engagement ring or wedding ring?

Does anyone wear there ering/wedding band to bed?

I wear my ring to bed every night!
I sleep on my side with my head on my hands, so to keep my ring from poking my face, I turn it around so the stone is by my palm.
I hate to take my ring off! :)

thistleorchid says:

If I wore it to bed, I’d wake up with scratches all over myself. I wake up, shower, and then put it on along with my watch and earings every morning. I take it off when I take those off, which is sometiems when I frist come in the door, sometimes when I’m headed to bed.

CBeth says:

I wear my ring to bed, working out, pretty much all the time unless I’m doing messy art projects. Although it’s an antique ring, so maybe I should take it off when I go to the gym to lift waights and work out. But it feels so strange not having it on, and I’m paranoid that if I take it off, I’m more likely to lose it!

Dboe says:

I also wear mine to bed. I’ve worn rings for as long as I can remember so it wasn’t hard for me to get used to an engagement ring. I haven’t lost my ring but I did lose one of the stones about a month ago (it has little diamonds around the band). We brought it back to our jeweler and she replaced it for free since the ring was only a couple of months old.

Leslie says:

I wear my ering to bed every night. I have another ring that my FI gave me when we had been together for 6 months and I have worn that every day and night since, so it took no getting used to for me to wear my ering when I got it.

Roslyn says:

I have the opposite problem Miss Apple. I am so paranoid about losing my ring that I wear it all the time–including when I go to bed. We recently got my ring insured so I do feel a bit better about it, but my paranoia stems from the fact that right before we got engaged, I lost the jade ring that my finace (then he was just my boyfriend), bought me when we were first dating. It was on my desk and we think it must have slid off, into the garbage. Anyway yes I wear mine all the time–but I think I will start taking it off a bit more. It is antique and it has old mine cut diamonds on the band that cannot be replaced (they don’t cut diamonds like that anymore), so I don’t want one to come off from repeatedly immersing my hands in dishwater, bathwater etc.!

Adrienne says:

I wear my nearly all the time. I take it off to do oily cooking and moving furniture, showering and drying my hair (the metal gets really really hot with the blowdryer, but I definitely sleep in it. I’m bad about putting jewelry on, so I usually wear all of it nearly all the time.

May says:

i religiously wear my e-ring! i feel naked w/o it and i’m anxious when it’s not in sight– when we got it resized i wanted to sit down with the jeweler and watch her do it just so i knew she wasn’t underhandingly switching the diamonds or something haha… and it also helps that there are no prongs to scratch me:

Dani says:

You totally sound like me…I definitely dont wear my ring more than I wear it…It is insured, but I would be heartbroken if anything were to happen to it. I am a nurse- constantly working with my hands, banging them around, etc…I would mangle it in 2 seconds if I wore it to work everyday! But since I work a lot, I find that I hardly every wear my ring at all. I dont wear it around the house, dont wear it to the fy,. dont wear it to run errands- is there a common theme here? I feel bad, but what am I going to do? I totally understand where you are coming from!

Areum says:

Hi Miss Apple!

I wear mine like 95% of the time. I wear it to bed, work, around the house, shower, working out etc. The only time I don’t wear it is when I’m cooking something and need to get my hands dirty. ie I don’t want to get like tempura batter on my ring!!

Anyways.. I do realize the cleanliness of your e-ring is important, but I feel in my opinion that you should wear it all the time…if it get’s nicks, scratches, and such; it justs means that it is worn often and kept on your ring finger as a reminder of your relationship with your fiance. And I feel that is important… like when I take my e-ring off to cook and forget to put it on.. my fiance notices and doesn’t say anything.. but it makes me feel bad. I promised to wear it always as a sign of our relationship..and I plan on doing that.

On a final note: I feel that the “scars” on your e-ring is a noble, loving gesture and it grows with you I think. I would find it very odd if someone who had a e-ring for a couple of years didn’t have one scratch on it.

11.
Dani says:

I meant to say I dont wear it to the gym, no the fy,!!! Sorry!

12.
Jenny says:

I wear my ring everywhere…to bed, to the gym, on errands, cleaning, cooking, fishing w. the FI, amusement parks, etc. The best way to “test” it out, especially if you’re worried about flinging someplace is to get your hands as cold as possible (because your hands will sorta shrink) and your ring will be at its loosest. Then try to see how hard it is to get the ring off. If it catches on your knuckle or knuckle skin then you’re good. Otherwise you may want to get a spacer put in to secure it or more drastic resize the ring.

13.
Miss Orchid says:

I’m oppisite of you also. I’m so afraid I’ll lose it that I wear it att the time, including to bed. The only time I take it off is before I shower (don’t wanna get yucky soap gunk into it), when I am cooking, and when I am working out.

14.
Jen says:

I have never lost my engagement ring, but I DID almost lose a ring that is very important to me…

For our first Christmas together, we knew we would be getting married, and so my then-boyfriend made us both fork rings cut from the same fork. We wore them on our left hands. When we got engaged I switched the fork ring to my right hand.

But then the week before our wedding, I had my engagment ring soldered to my wedding band, so I couldn’t wear it and I went back to my fork ring. One night I went out to the trash compacter to throw out our garbage bags and as I tossed the bag in, my fork ring went with it. I ran back to my apartment in tears, and my fiance went inside the trash compacter to retrieve it. I was so scared he was going to get compacted! The fork ring means just as much to me as my engagement ring.

So be careful ladies, if your ring is a little lose, because it could come flying off!!!! eek!

** loose not lose

tav says:

maybe you should wear some sort of chain around your neck, that way, if you are working out, you can take it off and put it around your neck like a neckalace or anytime you feel like you could lose it doing an activity.

17.
eisor says:

I have two rings from my FI and I have never lost either. They haven’t fallen off either. The jeweler even said I wear my ring a little too loose for her comfort, but I don’t like tight rings. I wear my rings to bed and everywhere. My e-ring is insured, so that does give some comfort.

18.
Di says:

I only take my ring off when I have to (lotion, manicure, etc) - I hate taking it off! If you’re worried about it falling off, maybe it’s too loose?

19.
hm says:

i don’t wear my e-ring to bed, but i do wear it almost everywhere else. i take it off when i wash my hands and when i cook, and it’s the last thing i put on before i leave work in the morning.
i’ve lost a little weight recently, and while i was talking to a friend, my e-ring suddenly slid off my hand and onto the floor! i was just standing there!

20.
Miss Mango says:

I also wear mine almost all the time. I do take it off at the gym, but I tie it into my shoelaces (Don’t trust it let in my locker). I also turn mine around when I go to sleep, but take it off for messy cooking. My FI and I have a game, though: whenever I take it off, he has to put it back on my finger. It started because he had so much trouble the first time, and I wanted him to practice so he wouldn’t look like he’s in pain during the ceremony!

21.
Miss Emerald says:

I wear mine every day, but take it off when I get home. I don’t want to mess it up cooking and cleaning… I also take it off at the gym! I have a little padded jewelry pouch in my purse that I keep it in…

22.
Tessa says:

I read the booklet that came with my ring about caring for my ring, and it said to take it off when cleaning, showering, sleeping, blah blah - but I never do. I am scared, like you, to lose my ring, so I keep it on all the time. The only time I take it off is sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and it’s bothering me so I take it off, but I put it right back on when I wake up. I realize it’s very expensive and nice, but I think they’re strong and can hold up to a lot of things.

BaghdadBride says:

I love my e-ring but wasn’t ready to take the risk of damage or stealing in Baghdad. The insurance doesn’t cover it in war zones (ladies check your policies)…so it is taking a rest for one year at my FMIL’s house and we bought a cheapie band to wear while we are over here. Leaving my ring was a very sad moment. I always take it off at night cause I find jewlery restricting to sleep in and I put it back on before I leave for work in the mornings…sometimes I forget…no biggie.

Miss Raspberry says:

i never take my ring off, other than to clean it!

That is why I have insurance! I love it and want to wear it all of the time.

25.
JG says:

I put my rings on right before I leave the house and take them off right when I get home. If you wear it in the shower, when cooking & cleaning, it just gets really dirty, doesn’t it? Also, if you sleep with it on, isn’t there a chance that you’ll accidentally sleep on top of your hand and then bend the prongs?

26.
ocicats says:

I wear my ring all day except for when I’m showering, sleeping, or cleaning.

27.
Jamie says:

I wear my ring all the time except when showering or cleaning.

28.
nat says:

I wear mine to bed. I only take it off when I shower, do heavy cleaning around the house, or put hand lotion on. I’ve never lost/misplaced it, but I did get really paranoid for a while when it was too loose for me. It actually did fly off once when I was flinging my arms around during an argument with my FI. I got it resized right after that.

29.
Miss Kiwi says:

I wear it most of the time. Not sleeping or showering or dishes (I wear gloves). Sometimes when it’s cold I just leave it off to take the dog out, too. I’m just afraid of breaking the prongs or chipping it, since I’m VERY clumsy. :)

30.
janie says:

I was really paranoid the first couple weeks I had it and I’ve only been engaged for about 3.5 weeks. We just got it insured yesterday so I feel a little better but at the same time, my mom made a good point, you should just wear it all the time bc if you take it on and off all the time, you might end up losing it from misplacing it. I rather it be on my finger all the time so I can keep a watch on it and it’s just a nice reminder of what an amazing adventure we’re about to take on. I’d probably just take it off to clean or like most others if I’m cooking and I know I might get a lot of gunk on it … otherwise I wear it all the time.

31.
spunky says:

I don’t wear my ring either! I think that my FI feels bad about it sometimes, he insists that I wear it when we go out together. I try to make it a point to wear it if I go out to meet someone, but I almost always forget!

32.
miss violet says:

i usually wear it when i’m out of the house.. but i forget sometimes. i don’t shower with it or do dishes or any dirty work with my ring on and i never sleep with it on, because i’ve scratched myself a few times.

33.
Angie says:

I wear my promise ring to bed… I wear it everywhere, except when washing dishes, swimming, cleaning with sprays or the like or taking a shower.
I think I’ll wear my e-ring all the time too, except for those situations…

34.
kp says:

i keep it on 24/7 - unless i’m using a rough facial scrub..

35.
Tea says:

i wear my promise ring religiously, even to bed. i feel naked without it. once i forgot to put it on and i drove back home to get it. i take it off when i’m doing my hair [with all the hair crap i put in, i don't want to gunk my ring up] or lotioning or doing chores. since i do yoga and/or mat pilates, i don’t have to take my ring off.

i know i’ll be the same with my e-ring too. my ring holds a really special significance to me.

36.
kate says:

When we were engaged I wore my e-ring 99% of the time, only taking it off to put product in my hair. Now that we’re married I wear my wedding band 99% of the time and my e-ring 50% of the time. Together they’re quite sparkly and fancy so I like to save wearing them both for when I’m in business clothes or fancier. For going to the gym or running to class I just wear my band.

37.
Emily says:

I keep my rings on all of the time. When we bought my wedding band, I thought I was a half size bigger then I acutally am, so I rarely wear my wedding band without my engagement ring. But about the only time I take it off is washing dishes, cleaning without gloves, putting on lotion, or when I’m cleaning it.

I had made a small nick in my engagement ring that scratched my face once, but that was when I was first engaged and haven’t had a problem since.

38.
Nancy says:

I never take it off. I wear it to sleep, to the gym, during manicures, while cooking and cleaning, putting on lotion, etc. A diamond is the toughest mineral so I dont think there is much risk to damaging it. The best way to lose it, in my opinion, is by taking it off. And yes, I know two people who have lost their engagment ring. My MIL lost hers in the bathroom at a vacation house (thankfully an honest cleaning lady found it and called the rental company so it could be returned) and another lost hers on the beach because she took it off to swim. Kinda hard to find in the sand.

39.
D says:

I wear mine all the time except to bed. It is insured so I don’t really overly worry about it much. I def. recommend insurance!

40.
Miss Plumeria says:

Hehe Barbara, great post! I wear mine all the time… I think I was pretty paranoid about it getting dirty the first couple of months, but then I got used to it. Now it’s being fitted to my wedding band at the jeweler’s and I feel naked without it. Oh wellll.. more on this in your emailbox later this week. :)

41.
Laura says:

I wear mine all the time, even to bed. The only time I take it off is when I’m putting lotion on my hands cause I don’t want my ring getting all goopy. When I first got it (this past August) I took it off before bed but now its become a part of me and I take it off as little as possible!

42.
lanamia says:

I wear my ring all the time, I think fiance told me I had to. Lol. When we went to get my ring sized, the jeweler explained that the ring should be tight enough so that it takes more than 3 seconds to take it off (ie. relatively difficult to take off even with effort) to prevent any loss. As a result of my ring being sized properly, I don’t ever worry about it falling off or me losing it. I only take it off to clean it.

43.
shelley says:

I wear it 24/7.

44.
wsukarebear says:

I never take my ring off…I had it sized perfectly and it’s not going anywhere!

My cousin lost his tungsten ring in the water in Hawaii on his honeymoon in September…if I thought I was at risk I would leave it in the room when our swimming. :-)

45.
K says:

I wear my ring ALL THE TIME! I wear it to bed, even showering! The shampoo actually makes it sparkle even more than the jewelry cleaner does! It’s meant to be worn, so that’s what I do! I only take it off, if I’m doing something REALLY REALLY messy in the crafts department or the baking department. Also, when we’re in my pool.

46.
wren says:

Yikes . . . I’d take it off all the time too if I was afraid it would scratch me or get stuck on stuff . . . not a problem with my nice flat eternity band.

47.
Farrah says:

I never take mine off. But my fiance had to take his off for his former job because it could have gotten caught in machinery. Well, he had worked it so loose on his finger, that he lost it one day. But, we just replaced it. No biggie. :)

48.
Maricris says:

i’ve never liked wearing jewelry to sleep.

the other times i don’t wear my e-ring is showering, cleaning and at work because i work in the operating room (so i wear it on a chain around my neck like a pendant)

49.
Alison says:

I take it off to sleep, shower, work-out, when cooking something messy… I can’t stand seeing it get dirty, though!

I have a tiny dish to put it in at home and have the original box in my gym locker to keep it safe :)

i wear my ring everywhere.

going to work, church, the mall, to the mailbox.

no place is too mundane for me to wear my ring, lol.

though i dont wear it to the gym but that had more to do with the way my hands swell when i work out, not wanting to keep it away from grimey equipment.

i take my ring off at nite for the same hand swellin gissue. if i didnet, i wouldn’t be able to get that thing off in th morning. my finger would be like a squeezed sausage.

i’m trying to get my water retention under control JUST SO i dont EVER have to take the durn thing off!
