Bye Bye Engagement Ring

January 16th, 2007 @ 9:34 am by Mrs. Apple

I’ve had my engagement ring for almost 6 months, and I’m still not used to wearing it. I love my ring - I love the antique etching on the sides of my band, I love how it sparkles, I love how it makes me feel so gooood. But I’m scared, I’m scared that I might lose it. stunned

I’m worried that I might lose it either down the drain while I wash my hands, or maybe I might just flick my arm somehow and it’ll go flying into some random manhole. Though we have ring insurance, I’m still very paranoid that I’ll be careless and forget or lose it somewhere.

But I just realized that I don’t wear my ring often. I don’t wear it to work sometimes, I don’t wear it while working out (dirty handles on the weight machines and elliptical), I don’t wear it when I go to bed (does anyone?), I don’t wear it when I am at home because I’m usually either cleaning or just lounging around. Also believe it or not, sometimes I don’t even wear it out when I run errands. I think I spend more time not wearing my ring than actually wearing it! How strange. Maybe I should wear it more around the house, so I’ll get used to it being on my finger.

Two Questions:

Has anyone ever lost their engagement ring or wedding ring?

Does anyone wear there ering/wedding band to bed?

I wear my ring to bed every night!
I sleep on my side with my head on my hands, so to keep my ring from poking my face, I turn it around so the stone is by my palm.
I hate to take my ring off! :)

If I wore it to bed, I’d wake up with scratches all over myself. I wake up, shower, and then put it on along with my watch and earings every morning. I take it off when I take those off, which is sometiems when I frist come in the door, sometimes when I’m headed to bed.

I wear my ring to bed, working out, pretty much all the time unless I’m doing messy art projects. Although it’s an antique ring, so maybe I should take it off when I go to the gym to lift waights and work out. But it feels so strange not having it on, and I’m paranoid that if I take it off, I’m more likely to lose it!

I also wear mine to bed. I’ve worn rings for as long as I can remember so it wasn’t hard for me to get used to an engagement ring. I haven’t lost my ring but I did lose one of the stones about a month ago (it has little diamonds around the band). We brought it back to our jeweler and she replaced it for free since the ring was only a couple of months old.

I wear my ering to bed every night. I have another ring that my FI gave me when we had been together for 6 months and I have worn that every day and night since, so it took no getting used to for me to wear my ering when I got it.

I have the opposite problem Miss Apple. I am so paranoid about losing my ring that I wear it all the time–including when I go to bed. We recently got my ring insured so I do feel a bit better about it, but my paranoia stems from the fact that right before we got engaged, I lost the jade ring that my finace (then he was just my boyfriend), bought me when we were first dating. It was on my desk and we think it must have slid off, into the garbage. Anyway yes I wear mine all the time–but I think I will start taking it off a bit more. It is antique and it has old mine cut diamonds on the band that cannot be replaced (they don’t cut diamonds like that anymore), so I don’t want one to come off from repeatedly immersing my hands in dishwater, bathwater etc.!

I wear my nearly all the time. I take it off to do oily cooking and moving furniture, showering and drying my hair (the metal gets really really hot with the blowdryer, but I definitely sleep in it. I’m bad about putting jewelry on, so I usually wear all of it nearly all the time.

i religiously wear my e-ring! i feel naked w/o it and i’m anxious when it’s not in sight– when we got it resized i wanted to sit down with the jeweler and watch her do it just so i knew she wasn’t underhandingly switching the diamonds or something haha… and it also helps that there are no prongs to scratch me:

You totally sound like me…I definitely dont wear my ring more than I wear it…It is insured, but I would be heartbroken if anything were to happen to it. I am a nurse- constantly working with my hands, banging them around, etc…I would mangle it in 2 seconds if I wore it to work everyday! But since I work a lot, I find that I hardly every wear my ring at all. I dont wear it around the house, dont wear it to the fy,. dont wear it to run errands- is there a common theme here? I feel bad, but what am I going to do? I totally understand where you are coming from!

Hi Miss Apple!

I wear mine like 95% of the time. I wear it to bed, work, around the house, shower, working out etc. The only time I don’t wear it is when I’m cooking something and need to get my hands dirty. ie I don’t want to get like tempura batter on my ring!!

Anyways.. I do realize the cleanliness of your e-ring is important, but I feel in my opinion that you should wear it all the time…if it get’s nicks, scratches, and such; it justs means that it is worn often and kept on your ring finger as a reminder of your relationship with your fiance. And I feel that is important… like when I take my e-ring off to cook and forget to put it on.. my fiance notices and doesn’t say anything.. but it makes me feel bad. I promised to wear it always as a sign of our relationship..and I plan on doing that.

On a final note: I feel that the “scars” on your e-ring is a noble, loving gesture and it grows with you I think. I would find it very odd if someone who had a e-ring for a couple of years didn’t have one scratch on it.

I wear my ring everywhere…to bed, to the gym, on errands, cleaning, cooking, fishing w. the FI, amusement parks, etc. The best way to “test” it out, especially if you’re worried about flinging someplace is to get your hands as cold as possible (because your hands will sorta shrink) and your ring will be at its loosest. Then try to see how hard it is to get the ring off. If it catches on your knuckle or knuckle skin then you’re good. Otherwise you may want to get a spacer put in to secure it or more drastic resize the ring.

I’m oppisite of you also. I’m so afraid I’ll lose it that I wear it att the time, including to bed. The only time I take it off is before I shower (don’t wanna get yucky soap gunk into it), when I am cooking, and when I am working out.

I have never lost my engagement ring, but I DID almost lose a ring that is very important to me…

For our first Christmas together, we knew we would be getting married, and so my then-boyfriend made us both fork rings cut from the same fork. We wore them on our left hands. When we got engaged I switched the fork ring to my right hand.

But then the week before our wedding, I had my engagment ring soldered to my wedding band, so I couldn’t wear it and I went back to my fork ring. One night I went out to the trash compacter to throw out our garbage bags and as I tossed the bag in, my fork ring went with it. I ran back to my apartment in tears, and my fiance went inside the trash compacter to retrieve it. I was so scared he was going to get compacted! The fork ring means just as much to me as my engagement ring.

So be careful ladies, if your ring is a little lose, because it could come flying off!!!! eek!

maybe you should wear some sort of chain around your neck, that way, if you are working out, you can take it off and put it around your neck like a neckalace or anytime you feel like you could lose it doing an activity.

I have two rings from my FI and I have never lost either. They haven’t fallen off either. The jeweler even said I wear my ring a little too loose for her comfort, but I don’t like tight rings. I wear my rings to bed and everywhere. My e-ring is insured, so that does give some comfort.

I only take my ring off when I have to (lotion, manicure, etc) - I hate taking it off! If you’re worried about it falling off, maybe it’s too loose?

i don’t wear my e-ring to bed, but i do wear it almost everywhere else. i take it off when i wash my hands and when i cook, and it’s the last thing i put on before i leave work in the morning.
i’ve lost a little weight recently, and while i was talking to a friend, my e-ring suddenly slid off my hand and onto the floor! i was just standing there!

I also wear mine almost all the time. I do take it off at the gym, but I tie it into my shoelaces (Don’t trust it let in my locker). I also turn mine around when I go to sleep, but take it off for messy cooking. My FI and I have a game, though: whenever I take it off, he has to put it back on my finger. It started because he had so much trouble the first time, and I wanted him to practice so he wouldn’t look like he’s in pain during the ceremony!
