Centerpiece Trays

January 16th, 2007 @ 5:07 pm by Mrs. Apple

Last year Mr. Apple and I were watching Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?, and there was a wedding planner on the show who had the cutest idea for centerpeices. We instantly loved the idea because it was unique, cost efficient, and the end result looked amazing. The bride and groom wanted an Asian inspired theme wedding with simple centerpeices, so they thought up this creative alternative - zen trays! I wish I could find the link to the centerpiece but nothing comes up when I google it.

So we’re going to follow in their footsteps by also using zen trays, but changing it up a bit. Our pieces consist of:

1) dark chocolate brown (one of our wedding colors) trays purchased at Target.com on sale for $20/each
- Mr. Apple had to seal these trays with a clear silicone II adhesive purchased at Lowe’s ($2 for every 3-4 trays) because they leaked when we did a test sample. This could have been disastrous if we didn’t do the trial.

2) black marble river rocks @ Garden Ridge for about $2.99 / bag (I think, its been awhile since I purchased these)

3) white floating candles @ Garden Ridge for about $4.99 / bag of 20 unscented candles

4) 2-3 small green lily pads (haven’t purchased these yet; we will wait until we finalize our floral centerpeice to get them).
You can subsitute loose dendrobium orchids or any flower for the lily pads.

The total cost will be less than $35-$40 per centerpiece.

We will alternate tables with high floral centerpieces and low zen trays. We will also have a few votive candles around the zen trays just to give it more lighting and drama. Here is a sample photo I took of the trays without the lily pads so you can get a good idea. Also, our guest tables will be round with a satin green table linen.

Sorry about the low lighting, this was taken at midnight in my room.

If only my venue would allow floating tealights (not in bubble bowls)… gorgeous!

Nony Mouse

I suppose it would be worthless to point out to them that they’re far more likely to deal with shattered glass and the related mess with a glass bubble bowl than in a straight-sided container?

I think floating cymbidium orchids would look really great too if you can’t find lily pads :)

Hey Jen

Mr. Apple says they discontinued them soon after we purchased them. -( Mr. Apple remembers we had a difficult time finding them too and the sales person said they stopped selling them at the stores. He had to go to 4-5 different Target stores to find the rest of them.

When is your wedding? If its after mine, I can sell them to you at a discounted price? -) We have about 10 trays for sale.

You can also check at Garden Ridge or World Market for close matches. As for the name of them….hmm..I think they’re decorative trays you put on coffee tables not so much a tv tray. I don’t know the exact name of them. sorry! -(

Let me know if you need anymore help!

Heya Jen,

After a little bit of though….i’m not sure if i can sell them to you. i’m worried that people might take them and I won’t have any control after the wedding. -((((

But I’ll let you know for sure if I have enough for you after the wedding! -)

if your family is anything like mine they won’t leave a single rock behind!

we will definitely look around the places you suggested, i went to michael’s and bedbathandbeyond yesterday and came up empty. the wedding is september 9th so we still have time.

it would be wonderful if you could let me know if you have any left, thanks! you can email me at our website (linked to my name) if you happen to remember. thanks again and good luck with the last month of planning!

hey miss apple - if you happen to read this - you said that you used clear silicone II adhesive to seal the boxes. can i ask which adhesive? there is a kitchen and bath one, etc. we tried using deck sealer but it didn’t dry and doesn’t seem to work.

thanks!!

Jen– keep us posted if you find them anywhere else! I’ve got till May 2010, so I’ve got plenty of time :) I think these are so gorgeous, and I’m really excited at the prospect of spending less on flowers and doing something more original. (but all the credit goes to Miss Apple!)
