Wedding Colors

January 16th, 2007 @ 3:27 pm by Mrs. Blueberry

Weddingbee has given a lot of attention to the color selection process, because it’s often one of the first decisions that we make as future brides. The colors we choose can have an effect not only on the look of the wedding and reception, but the mood, formality, and energy level of the day–not to mention how they play against the wedding party’s skin tones, cultural traditions, and personal preferences.

Before you start trying out cool tools like Kuler’s color scheme designer or making your own palette from the online “swatches” at Denver Fabrics, it’s useful to understand how to build a theme based on all these factors and more. That’s where the “Real, Genuine, Actually Useful Advice on Picking Your Wedding Colors” article from Favor Ideas comes in. This article provides a clear outline for how to choose the right colors for you, and has some really inspired ideas for finding unusual yet beautiful color combos.

Miss Plumeria has also written a great post on choosing colors.

Or, if you’re lazy and just want to skip all that, over at Color Schemer they’ve done all the work for you (thanks to Favor Ideas for the link). Just search for a term that describes your wedding…”romantic,” “vintage,” “sophisticate,” “beach,” etc. Color Schemer’s members have created numerous palettes for almost every search term I’ve tried!

Even if you’re beyond the preliminary stages of wedding planning, a revisit to your scheme can help reawake you. You may discover an accent color to incorporate, decide to shift a tone or two, or just reinvigorate yourself if you’re at a lull in the planning process smiley108

I say all this, but personally we just chose our colors with a conversation pretty much like this: “I like cobalt blue. Do you like cobalt blue?” “Sure.” “What goes with cobalt blue? Silver?” “Sure.” “And let’s add black too. And light blue in case we can’t find some stuff in cobalt. And my dress is ivory. So that too?” “Sure.” smiley504 smiley504

Our conversation went like this:
-So your sister (a bridesmaid) says she looks good in green, I think my sister would too.
-OK. What flowers are you thinking?
- I like orchids
- Those are purple
- We can have more than one color
- So green and purple?
- Sounds good

Actually, a bit more thought went into it, although I did start by giving the MOH free reign in colors she though people would like. They chose purple, but have since changed their minds to green.

And the symbolism is great - I’m getting married in Costa Rica where I grew up during the - Green Season (otherwise known as rainy) where you’ve never seen so many greens.

And the purple stands for both the orchid (my favorite flower, and the national flower of Costa Rica, and my tropical-ness) and the thistle (both my fiance and I have Scottish roots).

Now you’re thinking - Scottish roots from Costa Rica? My parents are anglo from the States, but I was born and raised in Costa Rica b/c my parents grew up there thanks to their parents being positioned there with companies.

Which is all a long way of saying - we’re doing green and purple. Plus it’s a bit funky, but can still be really elegant.
