Wedding Day Makeup Worries

January 16th, 2007 @ 4:46 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

For years I’ve been battling skin problems. It’s not really acne - I have a slightly less common problem: I’m kinda allergic to the sun. The only thing I can put on my face is sunblock so I’m unable to cover up my dark circles with makeup. Here’s why…

After being in the sun for ten minutes, I blister. I get welts and swelling, and at one point my dermatologist thought I had lupus. While the lupus tests came back negative, the other doctors brought in on my case couldn’t out why this happens. After trying many sunblocks with SPF of 72 and higher (it still didn’t stop the blistering), I finally found one that works - L’Oreal Ombrelle. It is a complete sun blocker, and I haven’t had a breakout since. The only downside? It makes me look even paler than I am already. The ingredient that makes it so photo-stable (unchanged upon exposure to light) is titanium. It literally shimmers when I put it on, and not in a good way. It’s bad enough I can’t get any color from the sun, but because I can’t really layer makeup over my sunscreen (too thick already, and it looks weird), I need something to cover up my circles for the pictures.

I figure that since it’s an in-tent ceremony outside and an indoor reception until 4pm, I could do without the sunscreen that day. Mr. Kiwi (knows outdoor sun things as a coach) says I should be okay without it, or just to use a little less, and make a thinner layer than usual.

So, now that my fluency in makeup application is a bit behind the times, I need to know - how do I get rid of the dark circles? It’s really a hereditary thing, not a lack of sleep or anything like that. The skin below my eyes is naturally thin, and you can see the black/blue circles very easily. I just don’t know what to do about it. My nose is a little larger than I wish it would be, and the circles seem to emphasize it, which I don’t want to be that obvious on the wedding day.

Those of you who deal with this, what are your recommendations?

I’m doing my own wedding makeup, and since you’re a fellow “real budget” bride I’ll recommend the concealer I use: Cover Girl under-eye concealer. It works really well for my raccoon circles and only costs about $4 or $5 :-)

But if you want to splurge, I’m sure one of the other ‘bees or readers can recommend high-end stuff that will work fabulously as well :-)

Have you tried Bare Minerals makeup? It is a mineral powder and it is supposed to be very natural. I use it daily and it covers fairly well without looking “cakey” or fake. HTH

http://beauty.ivillage.com/makeup/concealit/0,,8hqd,00.html I think the trick is to use the correct color for your skin. The real question is to figure out what color works. My suggestion is to go to the make-up counter in a department store and tell them you are interested a few new things, one of them being getting rid of the circles. They will tell you the right color and how to do it. Then you will know what works and can buy the product from them, or something similar at the drugstore. I am a huge fan of covergirl products.

It’s helpful.

Thanks everyone, so far… I went to Sephora yesterday and almost went into shock. I was honestly so overwhelmed. Right now I have maybelline dream matte mousse foundation, but I realized I don’t need matte. I need dewy damn it! Keep the help coming! Thanks!

i would try the bare minerals powder foundation to dust over your face. they also have a concealer that comes in powder form so you might want to try that out. but even with coverage you’ll need other makeup to give you some color.

or my other suggestion would be to mix your spf with a sheer foundation that’s a shade darker than what you would need.

I have always heard that concealer for eyes should be a shade lighter than the one you would choose to match your skin. I use bobby brown’s concealor stick and apply it under my eye from the corner of my nose and below my tear duct to the opposite corner of my eye every morning and I instantly look more awake and bright eyed. You can find bobby brown counters at major department stores, but I’m sure many other concealers would also work. Just make sure you get that right, light shade.

I am addicted to the benefit concealer. I have really bad undereye circles but tend to get dry flakey skin, so it’s been great since it stays nice and dewy but covers them up nicely. It’s a bit expensive, but a little goes a long way and the ladies at the benefit stores are really nice and will show you how to put it on and find the right shade for you. My other trick? Use a little highlighter just below the circles. It makes them fade into the distance!

laura mercier’s secret camouflage is great for covering even the peskiest undereye circles. http://www.lauramercier.com/products/flawless_face/products/concealers/secret_camouflage/

right now i use prescriptives camouflage cream, which has a lighter coverage. http://www.prescriptives.com/templates/products/sp_shaded_color.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY3283&PRODUCT_ID=PROD998

I know you’re on a budget, but if you want to get the creme de la creme… that’ll give you coverage plus the dewy finish you want, touche eclat by ysl is the way to go. http://www.amazon.com/Yves-Saint-Laurent-Radiant-Highlighter/dp/B00024Y2SK

i’ve also heard good things about kevyn aucoin’s concealers. http://kevynaucoin.stores.yahoo.net/sensualskin.html

good luck miss kiwi!

i don’t know if you’ve tried it already but do you think air brushed make-up would work? i haven’t used it personally but people say it’s very thin and since it’s like ‘painted’ on it might look great on the sunscreen. but then you would have to splurge on a trial and make-up on the day of…

I had this same problem with blisters from the sun. After numerous tests (including lupus), my doctor finally decided that it was the medication I was taking that was causing these blisters. This problem didn’t start until after I started taking medicine for a sluggish thyroid and high blood pressure. They changed my bp medicine and the blisters only occur occasionally now when I get in the sun. You should get your doctor to check the side effects of any medication (or any over the counter supplements) for photosensitivity. I hope this helps.

Miss Blueberry, I use Cover Girl too–the liquid one with the little wand. I buy the two lightest shades, and put the darker on the inside by my nose, and the lighter around it and on blemishes. The best method I’ve found is to put it on, and let it sit for a couple of minutes for it to dry a little, then rub it in gently with a fingertip in a patting sort of motion. Then I set it with powder–my favorite is Prescriptives Virtual Skin. I have very dark circles due to pale, thin skin, heredity, and allergies, and I’ve tried many concealers over the years. The best is still Cover Girl, for me.

I used to work at Sephora (I went back to school), and I have a couple of recommendations.
1) Try mineral makeup. You sound like you have very sensitive skin, and it’s the only thing I’d put on you after reading your post. Bare Escentuals is the most popular brand (available at Sephora), but it looks chalky on anyone who’s not white (I’m sorry, I don’t know your race, but it’s the truth). The upside of this brand is the built-in sunscreen, but with your problems I’d apply an additional sunscreen underneath.
The best brand, IMHO, is Jane Iredale (available at various boutiques, best you google), with the most skintones available and no chalky-ness. I also like Skin Allison Rafaele (also available at Sephora), but it doesn’t have a lot of skintones to choose from.
2) If you choose mineral makeup, take a concealer brush and pat on the foundation powder over the dark circles, then blend. Then set with a loose powder.
3) If you’re prone to asthma or allergies, try taking Claritin everyday. This has done wonders for my dark circles.
That’s all the advice I have- I highly recommend setting up an appointment with an artist or store that sells mineral makeup. Even though they’ll try to sell you stuff, you’ll learn techiniques. Good luck!

Hi,

I have dark circles under my eyes because of light, thin skin as well as allergies. I’ve had the best luck with Lancome’s photoreflective concealor. Not only does it provide thick coverage, but it goes on smoothly and it reflects light which means it looks better in photographs. You should give it a try :).

If you are looking for a less expensive brand of mineral makeup, I have had a good experience with Physician’s Formula. I have very sensitive skin and mineral makeup is the best for me! I don’t know how it would do with heavy sunscreen though so best to test in a store first. Also, I loved someone’s idea of mixing a sheer foundation with your sunblock. Did you try that yet???

I would try mixing a nice sheer foundation with your sunblock. And using a bit of concealer to cover up the problem areas.

Hey everyone, I haven’t tried the sheer foundation with my sunscreen yet, but that sounds like a good thing to try right now. I think I will also head in to Sephora and see what else I can find there.

Thanks for all the tips!
