Cool Centerpieces

January 17th, 2007 @ 2:40 pm by Mrs. Raspberry

I definitely want flowers for the centerpieces on our tables, but I’m just not sure how to arrange them yet. I have been looking around for a while and came across this gorgeous twig flower centerpiece.

It is available from Viva Terra for $95 each, which I think is a lot for the vessel to hold the flowers, but it would require so few flowers to make a statement.

Do you have any suggestions for something different as the centerpieces, that still have flowers?

one of the bios I saw a wedding where she had twigs with small flowers attached to them along with white feathers. They were small (baby rose) and they were wired on to the twig. There are lot of things you can do with centerpieces. All I can tell you to do is do some research on different centerpieces…you’ll be surprised on what you can find on the internet.

looks very modern! i like it! are you’re having long rectangular tables? i don’t think these will work with round ones.

Also, it may be difficult for your seated guests to converse through a “wall” of twigs and flowers. Just something to keep in mind.

Yesterday there was a posting about watersealing low wooden trays like the ones you show. What about watersealing bento boxes, and you’d have various compartments to work with? Check Asian restaurant supply stores?

Also there are wooden divider trays for silverware or cooking utensils that would provide that low square/rectangle shape. Could stain/paint and seal to a glossy laquer.

You could easily mimic those for less than $95 each! If you did a little bit deeper tray with river rock (gardening store) and actual twigs (with rock holding them in place) and a couple flowers.

i don’t know if it’s common in western flower arranging, but in japanese ikebana (art of flower arrangment), there are these things called kenzan that are circles or squares of metal with pin-sized metal spikes poking about an inch from them that hold flowers and twigs upright in arrangements. (you poke the bottoms of flowers and twigs in them so they stay put). you might just want to buy those and cheaper containers separately if holding flowers upright with twigs entwined is what you’re buying those containers for.

google search “kenzan ikebana” to see what i’m talking about.

To clarify for Lisa, in the States those are called “frogs” and can be found at garden & craft stores quite easily. They’re like the opposite of a pincushion (or, rather, they look like what “pincushion” sounds like).
