Mr. Bee and I are going to jump on the Miss Kiwi bandwagon, and go to Costa Rica for our 2 year anniversary! Woohoo! We asked our friends Marc and Christina who honeymooned there last year for some advice, and this is what they said:
“Good timing¢¢â€š¬¦ we went in Feb, which is the very beginning of the dry season, and we still caught a tiny bit of rain. March is right in the middle of the dry season so it’s got a nice combination of good weather and healthy looking (not totally dried out) plants.
Where to go/things to do:
- stay away from the capital, San Jose ¢¢â€š¬” it’s not that it’s dirty or dangerous¢¢â€š¬¦ it’s just boring ¢¢â€š¬” no real reason to bother with a visit.
- Liberia is where it’s at ¢¢â€š¬” it’s in the northwest part of the country (away from the capital city and right near some of the most beautiful Pacific beaches in the country)¢¢â€š¬¦ It has a new ¢¢â€š¬…”international¢¢â€š¬? airport (a tin roof and a few runways, but it does the job ¢¢â€š¬” you can fly direct from Newark). I’d plan at least half of the trip in one of the resorts along the beaches in that area (we stayed at Paradisus Playa Conchal and loved it, but there are many others that are probably great)
- The central mountains/Monteverde ¢¢â€š¬” toooootally different vibe from the coast, and totally worth a visit¢¢â€š¬¦ Monteverde is the best place to check out the legendary ¢¢â€š¬…”cloud forests¢¢â€š¬? of Costa Rica (basically just a thick mist high up in the mountains ¢¢â€š¬” spooky, cool, and fun)¢¢â€š¬¦ when the mist subsides, it’s also one of the best places to do some bird watching in all of costa rica ¢¢â€š¬” the most prized bird in the country, the Quetzal, is native to this area¢¢â€š¬¦ about the only place you have a chance of seeing it)¢¢â€š¬¦ *One thing!* If you really want to get the most out of a hike/bird-watching excursion in this area, you need to start right around *dawn* - honestly, by 10AM, most of the wildlife is in hiding for the rest of the day. So if you’re gonna do it, you may want to plan at least a couple of days up in the mountains ¢¢â€š¬” stay at a hotel in Monteverde and get up way early to do your hike.
- Volcanos/Arenal ¢¢â€š¬” as long as you’re up in the mountains, you gotta check out the big volcano ¢¢â€š¬” Arenal¢¢â€š¬¦ (You’ll hear it grumbling when you’re walking around the cloud forests.) Because it’s an actual live volcano (so cool), you actually can’t get too close to it (bummer), but if you are near it after sun down, some days you’ll get a nice fireworks display ¢¢â€š¬” you can see lava actually jettisoning from the mountain and pouring down the sides ¢¢â€š¬” pretty amazing. Where’s the best place to watch this show? *Tabacon Hot Springs* - if you’re anywhere near Arenal, you gotta check out this place (I’d recommend actually spending one night there) ¢¢â€š¬” it’s a spa/natural hot springs resort right at the base of Arenal¢¢â€š¬¦ it’s built on a little river that flows under/through the volcano and gets heated by it ¢¢â€š¬” you just walk up and down the river and jump into any little swimmin’ hole you want (the ones closer to the volcano are hotter, so you can choose your ideal temperature just by moving around to different swimming holes)¢¢â€š¬¦ of course it helps that there are little bars built along all the walkways where you can chill with a pina colada, or five.
We’re super excited, but there’s one problem - my passport just expired. We won’t be travelling until around March 5th (our anniversary), so that’s plenty of time to get my passport renewed. But I had been planning on changing my name before renewing my passport, and of course I’ve put it off ’til the very last minute.
So my question is - how long did it take you to complete the name change process? Do you think I have enough time to change my name and get a new passport in time for Costa Rica?
We’re only going for 3-4 nights (alas it’s hard to take more time off), so we’d also appreciate more travelling tips and advice on the must see/must do things in Costa Rica. Thanks! ![]()
