Not Your Typical Honeymoon…

January 17th, 2007 @ 6:15 pm by Mrs. Plumeria

¢¢â€š¬¦ but I guess you could say we are not your typical couple, either. We know our honeymoon of choice isn’t for everyone, but we’re confident that we’ll have a total blast! It will be twofold: the first part in Yosemite National Park, where both of us have been numerous times — but never together, and then, for a complete (and literal!) change of scenery, we’re heading off to Orlando to go to Disneyworld! We booked our room in the famous Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite a long while ago, knowing that it fills up quickly. My parents, who honeymooned in Yosemite many years ago, wanted to stay at the Ahwahnee but could not because it was completely full¢¢â€š¬¦ so we were vigilant about booking a year in advance. The hotel, most famous for its unique architecture, first opened in 1927 (you can read about its history here). With starting rates around $400/night, it’s a bit pricey, but not many hotels can boast about such a location, history, and visits from the famous.

As for the Happiest Place on Earth, we’ve been to California’s version many times, both separately as we were growing up and together as a couple, but this will be our first time to the Orlando parks. I think both of us agree that there really is something special about the Disney parks and the collective memories we’ve made there. We purchased our Disneyworld tickets (Park Hoppers!) through Get Away Today vacations; they were conveniently included in a package with our hotel. A couple of discounted airline tickets through Overstock and we’re on our way to the most perfect honeymoon we could ask for!

I think Disneyworld would be so much fun! I went there only once during HS a long time ago, and I remember seeing couples ride 2 person bikes together and thinking how romantic the place was. Have a great honeymoon!

The Awahnee Hotel is beautiful, you would have such a wonderful time just enjoying the beautiful scenery in Yosemite. We’re also nature lovers, so we’re definitely going somewhere scenic for our HM.

Oh how lovely! I lived at the Awahnee for a summer in college… and visited Yosemite for my first visit in May last year (it snowed while we were there on Memorial Day weekend). Nothing can top the feeling of standing in that valley at sunrise… it’s so magical. And DisneyWorld??? Oh Miss Plumeria, how we think alike!

The Ahwahnee is amazing. We used to go up to Yosemite often when I was a kid and although we’d usually stay someplace less pricey (I think we stayed there once or twice when my dad really wanted to spoil us…), we used to go there after skiing or hiking and have hot chocolate in the great room. Make sure to do their big breakfast one day too- not only is the view to die for, the blueberry pancakes are unbeatable! :-) Have a wonderful wonderful honeymoon. What a perfect choice!

I had the *good* fortune to get bumped up into the Awahnee the Saturday after 9/11. I’m English and was on holiday visiting my Californian friend and there was little else to do but carry on as best we could with our sightseeing. The place was half empty, but we paid the same as we would have done for the tented area and got a little cottage in the Awahnee grounds. Heaven on a stick. Remember to take a pretty formal dress for the dinner in the evening. There’s a guy playing a piano and we only had camping shorts and t-shirts. Quite embarressing. And, I agree with BA - the breakfast is INCREDIBLE but perhaps don’t try to force it down a full oesophagus the morning after you do the posh dinner!! Have an amazing time! xx

Hehe, I never picked up on the Harry Potter-esqueness of the place. I guess that would be appropriate for us too though… *pushes up glasses with finger*

But seriously, we cannot wait!! And we are going to try the breakfast and dinner — we’re doing a romance package that includes both, plus more nice goodies like chocolate-covered strawberries at bedtime. After reading your comments, I can’t wait even more!!!
