Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

Dealing with the Registry

January 18th, 2007 @ 12:43 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Going to register with Mr. Kiwi was like pulling teeth. Every thing was questioned, from the dish-rack to the $99 trash can. Yeah, almost a hundred dollars for a trash can is a little insane, but it’s Simple Human! I defy anyone to tell me that it’s not a work of art. :)

Mr. Kiwi’s standpoint on registering was that he didn’t think we should ask for anything slightly expensive. When I questioned him about this, he said, “Why should we ask people to buy us expensive stuff we can barely afford?” And okay, that is a good point, I suppose. My response back to him was, “Shut up, we can do this once in our lives, let me enjoy it!” :P

I guess Mr. Kiwi hasn’t bought much off registries, and doesn’t know that everyone registers for things they need. Even though he was a little hesitant and asked questions that I wasn’t sure how to answer (”Why do we need 12 place mats? We can only seat 6 people!”), Mr. Kiwi finally got into the swing of things, especially when it came to towels and cutting boards.

Did your husband or fiance have a hard time understanding registering?

At first, my husband was a little iffy about all the registry stuff…he didn’t want to register for things that were too expensive or things that he thought we didn’t really need…in the end though, he ended up realizing that a lot of the things we registered for were thing that we really wanted, but definitely wouldn’t have bought on our own..so…what perfect gifts! After the initial shock, he ended up enjoying registering for things and the roles switched..I started questioning whether or not we were registering for practical things or not..haha

I had the same situation with my fiance at when doing our B,B&B registry, even after I “calmly” explained a few times that we can and should include items of various price because some people like to go in together on a larger gift.

But when we set up our Sears registry, suddenly it was okay to add a $140 weed wacker and various components and attachments.

Everyone has their priorites. :)

When we registered, we had decided to put items we liked (wouldn’t necessary buy ourselves) in a reasonable price range. We also put items that were much more expensive so that if our friends/families wanted to buy us something as a group, there were items on our registry that allowed that. Most of the higher priced items were one of the first thing that were gone from our registry!

Our registry problem was that he didn’t think we could FIT anymore stuff in our apartment!! I tried to explain, well if we get new cookware, then we don’t have to keep all the really old gross broken cookware that came with our apartment (ahem, because the woman moving out DIDN’T WANT IT ANYMORE).

And then I sent him a link to a simplehuman trashcan just now and he thought I was crazy. :-)

My husband got so excited about registering. It was like shopping with a kid. He kept scanning my backside.

Just an FYI- we have that garbage can (received it as a gift off of our registry), and we love it! Remember that your registry is a WISH list, not a must buy list! You only get to do it once- go for it!

i think he’s more excited than i am. i think i’m going to have a hard time trying to figure out what to put on the list because we wont’ be using this stuff until 6 months later.

and i we plan on getting a simple human garbage can too!

We had a fun time registering. But my husband couldn’t figure out why we needed more than 1 set of sheets and more than 2 towels!!! Luckily he came around.

He also kept scanning random things when I was looking. Like a pirate sword.

Yes, totally love the Simple Human trash can! Something my guy can relate to, since he takes out the trash. Totally worth $100. Fiance also very excited about $400 Dyson vacuum.

Wedding is in less than a month and every price point is being hit (with some surprisingly generous purchases), so you never know — broad variety and include practical and decorative items so people feel good about what they select.

The trend I notice is guests not buying stuff that is part of a larger set (dishes, china, silverware)… maybe they feel their gift is better remembered if it’s a stand-alone item like a vase.

my best friend just went registering with her fiance and she told him he was ruining the experience! lol. he doesn’t get too excited for shopping [unless its at a grocery store since he works in one] nor was he stoked about the scanner [which is, imo, THE best part] so he wasn’t that into registering. luckily she went again with her sister and mother and had a much better time.

I guess Mr. Kiwi isn’t alone then! I thought he’d like the scanner, too, but then he pressed some button on it and we had to get a new one. That’s when I was in charge of it!

For Christmas, we received two sets of our flatware and two sets of our barware! I figure we’re on a roll! Thankfully I can now update online, so that takes a lot of stress away!

My fiance is also confused by the registry process. He doesn’t think we need to register for so many sets of sheets and towels and such, but he’ll come around. We are going in the next couple of weeks.

When we went to Fortunoff, we fought through the entire process. We just didn’t know where to start and what to put on and got very frustrated at each other :(

Second time at C&B was better :)

I’m in the minority, I guess. My fiance has been excited about the prospect of having a registry from the start. After being engaged well over a year, we finally set ours up this past weekend - despite the fact that our wedding isn’t until October. We didn’t step one foot in a store - did it all online. We started with Target, but nixed it when we realized most of the stuff was only available online and not in their stores.

We finally settled on two stores - Bed, Bath and Beyond and Macy’s. Macy’s is our expensive registry with Vera Wang china and expensive flatware (though not silver, much to the chagrin of my future mother in law — sorry, but I can’t bring myself to list something that is over $200 a setting). One of my coworkers found our Bed Bath and Beyond registry and bought us stuff right away! I was shocked! I’ve never been so excited to get cake pans and measuring cups in all my life. :)

He started as a little bit skeptical, but excited to try it. What finally made it click for him was this exchange
Him: Why do we need 4 sets of sheets?
Me: You know that white set that you love so much?
Him: Yea
Me: It’s falling apart after 5 years of using it.
Him: Ok
Me: So, we’re registering for a lifetime together. A lifetime. . . the sheets we get for our wedding won’t last that long if we only get one set.
Him: Oh. So I should be thinkign a little longer than next year.
Me: Yes….(head slap)

my FI pretends like he doesn’t care about the registry, but at the same time he will expect us to pick things that are “not too girly” and are actually kind of manly. if it were up to him, we would be living in a bachelor pad. i think when registering, you need to get things reasonably priced, i say anything over $150-200 is starting to get expensive, and the likelihood that it will get bought is low. at the same time, when you register for cheap things $5-10, people don’t want to buy something cheesey like that, which you could just buy for yourself..
