About Mrs. Orange

Note To Self: Do Not Forget The Shoes : wedding new york wedding dress IMG 063

Why shoes you may ask? Tomorrow is my first fitting. The first fitting is usually six weeks before your wedding day, and with my mom in Japan, I asked my FMIL to come along. You want to bring someone with careful eyes so you can make sure that:

  1. the dress is what you ordered (sleeves, color, train, neckline, etc.)
  2. the dress feels good on you (waist, length, chest, or even how the material falls)
  3. the dress is well sewn and in good condition (lace, beading, etc.)

It’s also your time to meet and evaluate your seamstress. You want to feel comfortable leaving your dress with her, so watch and check if she knows what she’s doing.

I am definitely packing my strapless bra and shoes — but what else did you bring to your first fitting? Jewelry? Veil?

I’m in the same situation, except my mom’s in CA (I’m in OH) and so I’ll be asking my FMIL to come with me to my first fitting in March.

I’ll be bringing my slip, my bra, and my shoes. I’ve thought about bringing jewelry, if I’m still undecided at that point and have a few options that I’m choosing between.

I definitely want to make sure that my hair is up on the day of the fitting — because I’ll be wearing it that way on the day of and I want to have as close an idea as to the look I’ll have — and don’t want to run the risk of feeling like a slob in my dress!

I say, bring it all! (Shoes, underwear, jewelry, veil). How often do you get to wear your dress? Might as well enjoy it… Plus, you can make sure everything goes together the way you want it too. Make sure your FMIL brings her camera, too (or bring yours and ask her to take pictures).

Don’t forget your spanx if you are wearing them on your wedding day.

I highly recommend them and they will suck you in and be smoothing!

Bring spanx if you have them even if you weren’t previously planning on wearing them. You may just decide that the added support is a good thing.

HAIR CLIP - If you’re wearing your hair up on your wedding day, bring along a clip or something so you can twist it up to better simulate the overall look. Also it will help FMIL better examine the dress because hair’s not in the way.

BRA - Yes, bring your strapless bra, but — surprise — also try the dress without it and consider how it would look with sewn-in cups (if your dress style and chest size are amenable, that is). My dress will look and feel so much better with the sewn-ins, and they are covering them with silk so they will be so comfy.

SLIP - Yes, they have them in the store, but you won’t be able to use the store’s on wedding day. The gown’s hem length (and in some cases the waistline) is dictated by how poofy your slip is. Some are more poofy in the back than the front/sides. A wedding dress slip is definitely something to borrow from another bride, as it is never worn again and hogs the closet. Some crinnolines are itchy (depends on lining), so a basic white satiny everyday slip underneath helps. Everyday slips are so hard to find right now in stores but every grandma has them still!

VEIL - If you bought or borrowed a veil already, bring it along to get the overall look.
