Qi Pao Length

January 19th, 2007 @ 12:40 pm by Mrs. Apple

In my previous post, I mentioned my future mother-in-law having my qi pao custom made in Vietnam. I just got the care package yesterday and tried it on. It’s a little loose on the waist and shoulders (she told the seamstress to make it a little loose just in case I gained weight), but everything else fits great! I love the colors - red and black. I was a little apprehensive when she told me what the colors were, but after trying it on, I really love it!

The only thing I’m a little unsure about is the length of the dress. I gave her my measurements not knowing that I should have measured from my waist to the floor (not my ankles). Eeek! So it’s a little short. Does this look disproportionate to anyone?

Here is a photo of me in the qi pao minus my big head. I had to pull the waist in since it was a little loose.

What is the correct length for a qi pao - stop at the ankles or the floor?

Floor length I think cuz when it stops at the ankles, it makes you look too tall for the dress. But to the floor, it gives it a nicer flow.

I was told by my tailor that it should cover the back portion of your shoe (but not the heel) and long enough so that it covers most of your foot minus the toes. Does that make any sense?

Mine came to my ankles and it was fine.

If it doesn’t go against custom, you could wear black nylons. That way it won’t be such a “shock”. If not, it looks beautiful just the way it is!

I got mine so it was long enough for me to wear heels and have it touch where my heels begin—that said, I’ve seen a lot of styles where it stops at the ankes of even calf length it was totally fine. Don’t worry about it!

I think they look more elegant when they go to the floor. Love the color/design though.

mine goes to the floor. the ankle length looks too casual i think.

you can have a band of red fabric added to the bottom. make sure it matches the piping of the top of your dress or the lining of your dress. good luck!

I think it’s up to personal preference - looks good! :) I thought you were going to get an ao dai?

Miss Plum,

I also have to wear both an ao dai and qi pao since we’re having the tea ceremony for my family and prayer service for his family. I will have 3 ceremonies on the day of. Good times!

i think the proper length is floor length, but the more “modern” versions are shorter.

if you can ask your MIL to make another one (wear two)…if not, it looks good if you can find a very good looking pair of shoes…looks good…how are you wearing your hair with qipao?

MN - I haven’t yet thought about hair trials yet for the day, i’m not sure since I’m going to wear a ao dai hat along with my ao dai dress so that means either need to put my hair in a really high bun (not me at all) or leave it all down. My hairdressor probably will not want to be with me all day and neither can I afford her too. So what to do what to do…i guess i’ll find out when I start doing hair trials this month.

Second question, what kind of shoes do people wear with a qi pao? I’m so oblivious to these things…..

I think it really should be okay either way — usually it’s floor length but I have worn one at the length it is on you in the photo and no one said a thing — no one really notices, honestly. But if you feel uncomfortable I would def. support you if you decided to look for another one *wink*.
