Help Me Help Myself

January 20th, 2007 @ 9:19 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Much like Miss Orange’s post about the items she needs to bring for her first fitting, I need to know: what do I bring for my first dress trying-on expedition?

I’m finally getting a little excited about trying on dresses. What really got me excited was Mr. Kiwi saying “No matter what you wear, you’ll still be a beautiful Miss Kiwi forever.” And, I realized that it doesn’t matter what the number inside my dress says. I’ll probably end up cutting it out anyway! So, as I mentally prepare for my day of “dressing up and down,” I need to prepare physically.

What kind of things do I need to bring? I was planning on wearing a corset, then I realized that if the dress has a lace-up back, it’d look stupid. So, a strapless bra and boy shorts? I would really like to cover as much area as possible, with my fish-belly white tummy not being as visible. I’d wear shorts if I could, but a friend pointed out to me that they might be bulky under slimmer fitting dresses. Not that I’d wear a slim dress, but I must be prepared!

What do you suggest I wear or bring? Should I bring shoes that will be as tall as I’m planning to wear on the wedding day?

If it’s just your first time out to try on dresses, I wouldn’t worry too much about the shoes yet as you know you will have more chances to try on different shoes. I tried on dresses in my underwear and for many I was braless as well, but there was never someone in the room while I was nakie. For any dresses that needed lacing or buttoning, I was allowed to get all covered up first and then someone came in to help. I would suggest bike shorts, if those aren’t too bad, and maybe a strapless bra. But really, you’re just going out to see what you like and then you can see what really works with it later, right?

not sure about the undergarments, but i would recommend heels if you plan to wear some on the w-day. i’m short and seeing the dresses with heels was a big help. when they ask you to stand on the stand, well for me it was a terrible illusion. everything looked so long and made me look lean. i finally got to the point of asking not to be on the stand. so the shoes came in handy to see my actual height and round-about dress length.

I brought a strapless bra with me. However, they will have longline type bras that you can try. Your bra may not work with every dress. For undies, my recommendation is to wear a more pale color, like pink or white. You don’t want that electric blue to show through the dress!

Strapless bra if you have one.

Also, I always recommend others to take a bottle of water. Trying on these dresses seem easy, but with the train, unfamiliar and sometimes heavy fabrics used, you will need a nice bottle of water afterwards :-)

where i went they had everything… strapless corset type bras, shoes in all heights, and even bouquets for the full effect. call ahead to where you’re going and ask them what they suggest you bringing along.

i wore tight fitted leggings for my dress shopping. its winter so it won’t be out of place ya know? and that way you’ll be a bit more covered up overall.

good luck on finding “the one” (funny how that now becomes in reference to the dress once you’ve found the guy!)

I didn’t bring anything special with me. I do wish I had a camera though.

I wore white little boy shorts underneath. They gave me a pair of shoes to try on with my dress.

As for being concerned about what you look like …. just remeber these woman see girls of all shapes and all sizes. It is kind of like having your doctor see you. After I bared all (besides my undies) for the first dress … I got over being shy real fast.

Good Luck!!

i would suggest getting one of those long tummy tuckers that extend from over your breasts to your mid thighs - i got mine at victoria’s secret and it was great to try on dresses. it kept everything covered and pulled in, and matched my skin decently enough that even when it peeked out the back of the dress, it didn’t matter

I would also agree with water - it’s hot trying them on! And the camera for pictures.
no shoes, they will lend you a pair if you love a dress that much

Yea you get over being shy pretty quick. A lot of places won’t let you take pictures, give it a shot (no pun intended) but dont be suprised if they ask you not to. My MOH was with me and she’d take pictures when the lady was fetching something out of the room really quickly. Or with her camera phone…

Don’t worry about shoes, you will be focusing on what looks best from the neckline to the calfs, you’ll know that it’ll be shortened and many of the stores have heels to let you try on.

Most of all - don’t get deflated if you don’t fit IT in one day. It took me 8 different days and multiple places on each day to find IT . . .but I had fun at each place! If they offer you something to drink, take them up on it! You’re the client, if they want to make you feel all special, let them!!

Strapless bra, heels close to your preferred wedding heel size, clean undies. And like the other ladies said, you’ll get over the shyness fast!

1. Strapless Bra- I found a lot of places did’t have one in my size.
2. Sucker-inners (like Spanx or something). It really helps to make things more flattering, plus to hide you butt from the view of others.
3. Heels if you’re short, even if you don’t plan on wearing them. I was planning on wearing flats so I didn’t bring any heels to the first few stores and all the dresses were about 12 inches too long on me (I’m 5′3″)- even when standing on “the box” (a little platform to make you look taller).
4. Camera- I suggest not asking if you can take pictures, and turning the flash off so they don’t notice.
5. Camera Phone- In case they do notice your camera, it’s easier to be sneaky with a camera phone.
