Bridesmaid Dress Shopping Part I

January 22nd, 2007 @ 12:49 pm by Mrs. Blueberry

I’m so excited! In a couple of weeks my MOH and I are both heading down to our mutual hometown of Kansas City to meet up and do some bridesmaid dress shopping.Since I just have one bridesmaid, I’m trying to be super easygoing with her. And it’s easy for me, too–I don’t have to find one cut and one color that works on a gazillion different girls, stress about a complicated order getting messed up, or feel bad about requesting the purchase of a gown that no one likes. Nope, Katie (her first name is the same as mine smiley508) gets to wear whatever dress she wants–I just request that it be cobalt blue or light blue, and possibly tea-length.

We live far apart and rarely get to see each other, so even if I can’t be the *best* B2B, I’d like to at least be the most easygoing smiley1012.

How did you select your BM's gowns?

I guess I wanted to select “other” because I didn’t have a specific cut, color and style in mind. We searched and chose together, really. It was a very democratic process. :-)

I had a specific color picked out, and we all spent time looking online (we’re in 3 different cities) at the different dresses available in that color, and all the girls gave me their opinions. I made the final choice, but it was the one that all the girls liked.

I did the same thing as you, Miss Blueberry. I only have one attendant, so I just let her choose whatever she wanted after giving her my general color scheme.

Worked out great and she loved being able to pick out what she wanted and what looks good on her!

I wanted them to wear whatever they wanted - any color, style, etc. but they asked for guidelines so we settled on a range of colors and they could buy any style of dress within that color palette.

Once the majority had decided on their dresses we realized they were all long so we then asked the other two girls to buy long gowns as well.

It was so easy to do it this way. However I haven’t seen the dresses all together yet but I’m sure it’ll be fine.

i decided on color. and i had an idea of the style i wanted, or rather didn’t want. we all took a shopping weekend trip to houston and we all decided what looked best on all the girls. they essentially picked it. i had in mind shorter dresses, but they were more comfy in long, so long it was! i also thought each girl would have to wear something different due to different body types, but they found something that looked great on all of them.

I have two answers for this–I chose the specific dresses and colors for my junior bridesmaids and flowergirl. My sister, who is my MOH, however, is choosing her own dress. She’s going to get something that will tone with the rest of the bridal party, but, it’s her choice as to style and color. I trust her. She’s not buying a traditional “bridesmaid” dress either, as she’s on a diet and is trying to lose weight before the day, so she can’t order a dress five months in advance.

I chose other because the situation was similar to wsukarebear’s. We all went together and they tried on various styles. They found a style they liked and I looked into options. I found a dress at target.com that I liked and I wasn’t out any money by purchasing it. So, I bought one for everyone and figured if they didn’t fit or they didn’t like them, we’d return them. The dresses looked great on everyone, so we kept them!

Chose two styles and a color, they chose which one they wanted to wear.

I WISH I’d just let them wear whatever they wanted in the right color, or even just in black. Not because I don’t like the dresses–just because there was no reason (for me) to be so specific.

Having worked in a bridal store for six years, I have seen some out and out horrors in behaviour and attitude of both brides and bridesmaids. Brides demanding pure disgusting and thoughtless outfits that ignore her friends’ body issues (strapless on LARGE girls etc) or BM demanding sex appeal or value for money or just their demands when it’s the BRIDE’S DAY!!! I think it a real mistake to fall in to the ‘I want them to wear it again’ trap. It will always be a BM’s dress to the BM, regardless. Brides should pick what they want and can afford and BMs should suck it up. You will only want the same in return when it’s your day.
I’m only having two and, as I know them, fashion, my sense of what I want, and also know what suits them and what they wear (I’m in fashion -it’s my job!), I have picked what they’re wearing, but knowing that they will be happy with it and consulted on minor details….

Sister (MOH) had a bridesmaid dress I loved from a wedding she was in 2 yrs ago. Everyone’s thrilled to have a re-run of that great dress, and others selected their own — Anything from same store in same color/fabric/length.

(Whatever, not worried about identical dye lots when we saved so much $ and made my busy-and-broke sister so grateful…)

I picked out a few dresses that I thought would be nice and sent them out to the bridesmaids. Then they voted on which one they liked best. Thankfully, they all picked the same one.

it’s my sister only, and she wears whatever she and my mom agree on. i don’t care cut or color, but i know she and mom will, so it’s their decision!

I tried to let them choose whatever, but that didn’t really work out. They were too lost! So I gave them an idea of what I liked, sent out a whole bunch of different styles and let them vote. In the end they all (unanimously, believe it or not) voted for a specific style. I ended up buying something similar at the Jessica outlet on sale. :-)

My MOH is so in charge in this arena. She figured out what colors looked best on everyone via email (we’re in three diff spots around the country), and I built my color scheme around that (green/purple - happens to be I really like it anyway!). Then MOH and I went dress shopping a couple times and she sent out the emails letting them know what length we both liked (long) and what fabric to keep it in and they’re doing it all. Woo!

i have 4 bridesmaids. 3 live near me so i have gone shopping with two so far and we found the color and fabric. the only other stipulation i had was they could either all be tealength or all be floorlength - they all opted for for floorlength. i tried to pick a color that would look good on all of them and not just one or two so hopefully it all works out! each lady has their own style and i think each will look fantastic!

I said floor length chocolate brown. I took all of the bridesmaids out together and we went to 3 different salons. Tried on a bazillion dresses. I wanted everyone in the same dress. It came down to two dresses and it was 3 to 2. I voted and made it 4 to 2. But, both of the final dresses were in everyones top two.

I’m not finished with this yet, but I’m thinking about just telling them to pick a chocolate brown dress and give them some suggestions like Aria, J. Crew, Ann Taylor who make these dresses at reasonable prices and are easy to interface with.

That way they can ultimately decide the budget and pick a dress that fits their body type.
