Petite Veils

January 23rd, 2007 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Kiwi

Now that my dress is finally chosen and ordered (whoo hoo!), I’m thinking about veils. The veil, to me, is very important. Since childhood the veil has always symbolized a wedding to me. When I go to weddings, I look at the veils. If there isn’t one, I’m slightly disappointed because I love to store them in my memory.

My problem is now this: what size to get? While I know now that I’m getting an ivory veil with little to no embellishment (meaning pearls/crystals/beads), I wasn’t sure of the length. Now, after surfing various sites (I found brides.com to be helpful), I decided that I want a two layer veil. One layer I’d like to be fingertip length, and the second one to be a blusher just at (or an inch or two below) my chest.

When I got to Veil Shop, I noticed they have both the regular fingertip length and the petite fingertip length. What is the difference, you ask? Petite fingertip is 35″ long, with the blusher being 29″ (although I’ve heard 24″ is also popular), and regular fingertip is 42″ long. So that’s a whole 7 inches of material cut out. Since I’m only five feet tall, I’m assuming petite fingertip is the one for me.

Here is the petite fingertip:

And this is the regular:

Now that I see the 29″ in the model, I am assuming I may need the 24″ instead. I’m just not that long!

Did anyone choose a petite version? How did it work out? I am completely confused even though I know I have plenty of time. :)

I just got my veil from weddingveil.com

It’s fingertip with a 24″ blusher. It’s soft white with lace trimming. I thought the 24 ” was still too long for me and it felt like I was wearing a mosquito net over my face. So I’ve decided to just keep it back as a 2 layer veil. It’s gorgeous, and I’m so glad I chose that over the cathedral (also I have a train on my dress similar to your dress so I didn’t want a long veil to take away from the dress). Good luck!

Thanks, turtle!! That is very good information to know. I think the 24″ would be a good choice for me, then.

Never heard of a petite size veil but it totally makes sense, scaled to the bride’s height! Also, it’s a nice alternative for anyone whose dress calls for something shorter.

I don’t know anything about petite veils, but I do know that you should try your veil on WITH YOUR DRESS before you commit! I was dead-set against having a veil until the owner of the bridal store where I bought my gown (who is the mother of my future sister-in-law) plopped an absolutely PERFECT one on my head. Literally, it looks as though the veil was custom made to go with the dress, and I was sold. My lesson learned was that you have to see it juuuuust to be sure.

If you’re only five feet tall, a short veil will cut you in half. A waltz, chapel, or cathedral veil will actually elongate you. Something for you to consider….
