I travelled in Thailand a couple of years ago and wasn’t awed too much by Ko Samui. It’s extremely “touristy” and didn’t have the feel that we were looking for - a quiet, beautiful and restful place where we could spend afternoons swimming or hiking or reading etc.
Thank goodness I did some research and found Ko Chang (Elephant Island) an island in the eastern part of Thailand. You have to take a bus from Bangkok and then a boat to the island but it was SO worth it. They have everything from resorts to inexpensive huts on the beach, gorgeous beaches and waterfalls!

We were in Phuket last month and also found it was extremely touristy - so much so that we didn’t want to go into the towns nearby, Patong and Kata. Our resort had a shuttle to Nai Han beach that was much calmer but if I had to do it over again I would like to find somewhere much more isolated.
If you are going to Thailand, I would strongly recommend Railay Beach. It’s near Krabi. Surrounded by natural beauty and tons of activities you can do. Not yet as touristy as Phuket or Ko Samui.
There are a lot of small bungalow style lodgings there. The nicest but priciest is Rayavadee.
we honeymooned in thailand, and it was awesome. we stayed in Chandara in Phuket, and had our own gigantic pool overlooking the bay, but like the others said, don’t go to the tourist areas..so not fun…
