Someone I know who works for Tiffany shared this info with me…

“The Novo (‚”to make a new‚? in latin) is the first cushion brilliant cut diamond engagement ring to be launched. It just hit Tiffany stores this month.

What differentiates Tiffany Novo from typical cushion cuts is that it is brilliant versus modified brilliant. Tiffany worked at great length to create a cushion cut diamond that features the standard round brilliant facet arrangement. It’s been cut to maximum brilliance, ie. same number of facets as a round brilliant cut. The shank is bead set with 16 round melee diamonds. Opening price point is $2810. There are matching diamond weddings bands that come in 18k yellow gold, 18k rose gold and platinum. (This is also the first time Tiffany is doing rings in 18k rose gold— most retailers do not offer rose gold)

Tiffany is the leader in the diamond industry in practicing the Kimberly process. They believe in giving their customers assurance that the diamonds sold by them are conflict free.”

For any of you who’s been looking at rings, I think this one is quite a looker. ^_^

I heard that Tiffany’s get their diamonds from Canada so that they can say it’s “conflict-free” but in fact the diamonds are initially still from Africa’s conflicted areas.

I love this. I had a few requirements for my ring. One was that it not be brilliant cut or “round” as I say. So, I got a cushion or Ascher cut. I was told that originally it was used to disguise flaws, but is coming back into popularity.

Other requirements were that it be white gold and yellow gold together and just a ring without a band, although, now, I wish I had gotten this with two bands–one in each color.

I’m such a dork. My first thought was: their Latin is faulty.

Novo = I make new / refresh

Novare = To make new / refresh

Tiffany and Co. along with various other jewlers work very hard to eliminate conflict diamonds, however it is almost impossible to totally eliminate them. This is due to the fact that these stones are already in the market place and are unmarked. A lot of diamond deals may not even know they have conflict diamons in their posession. TCO has their own mines which are in canada and they do get a large number of stones from those mines. They have been instrumental in the fight on conflict diamons and were heavily involved in the development of the Kimberly process. http://www.kimberleyprocess.com/site/background.html

This is an absolutely beautiful ring. My boyfriend recently asked me “If I were to ask you to marry me, what kind of ring would you want?” Ok so he’s not into complete surprises but this is the ring. Just unsure though. Diamonds used to be a symbol of luxury, now they seem to be a symbol of greed, excess and to a degree arrogance. Urgh, sure is pretty though.

I picked out this ring too but my boyfriend is having it custom made by his jeweler. I’d recommend this since T&CO is definitely overpriced and you should by diamonds loose anyways which you can’t do at T&CO. Most jewelers will do this. Just send them the pic and find the diamond and they’ll take it from there! Can’t wait to see how it turns out!

ok. i was recently proposed to. my now-fiance got me the tiffany novo and i absolutely love it. i have never seen anything so beautiful in my life. i can’t stop looking at it.
anyway, NO CUSTOM JEWELLER can make this ring. first of all, ONLY TIFFANY knows how to make a BRILLIANT CUSHIONS. other cushions are NOT brilliant. so if u don’t pay the T&Co premium price, you’re getting exactly what u paid for - just another normal cushion.

i think it’s kinda dumb how tiffany only made the wedding band in rosegold and no engagement ring in rosegold. if i get the rosegold wedding band, it won’t match my platinum engagement ring!

I love this ring. I showed it to my boyfriend and he think it’s a beauty. I hope that I will receive this ring someday. It is gorgeous! The beauty of this ring is undeniable and nothing else compares. Wish me luck ladies. Congrats to those engaged with this ring!

Does this ring really start from $2800 that sounds cheap as that works out at about £1600 pounds? And people say starting whats the variance?

So I got my ring a few months ago, custom made and i have to tell you, it does look exactly like the tiffany Novo AND the size of the “cushion modified brilliant” is much bigger then what we could have afforded if we had gotten the actual tiffany. We took my ring into tiffany and held it next to the Novo and it look identical! No regrets here! it’s beautiful and we saved a ton! you just have to do your research and find a good jeweler and the perfect modified cushion and you’ll be all set. If you are in the bay area shoot me a line and i’ll give you all my jewelers info. Also, yes the tiffany Novo starts at $2,800 but the size of the diamond is soooo small.. a 1ct novo starts around 24k.

@Lady: I love your approach. Can you give me your jeweler’s info and I’d also be curious as to the price you paid.

Thank you.

to John g- my fiance went to Heller Jewelers in San Ramon. He sent them a picture of the Novo and said “just make it identical” and picked out a loose diamond that replicated the Novo’s brilliant cushion. We ended up with a 1.22 ct cushion modified brilliant, color F, VS1. I’m not sure of the total cost he paid (he won’t tell me, as he shouldn’t) but i know it was at least 10k less the then same size/clarity Novo at Tiffany.
Good luck and Congratulations!

@Lady: Thanks. Do you know if there’s a difference between “modified brilliant” and “brilliant”? One of the above comments stated that only Tiffany’s had the “brilliant” and all others were plain old cushions. Was it difficult to find a cut that matched that of Tiffany’s, or is Tiffany’s not really unique?

@john g: that’s a good question. From what I’ve learned/researched the brilliant cushion is more of a trademark name for tiffany, like hearts on fire or hearts and arrow. So yeah, you can find one that comes very close/doesn’t look different to the naked eye. It’s more marketing then anything and you can get this custom made. I know my fiance had a couple different jewelers searching for the perfect modified brilliant cushion and then had them compete for the best price. Just do your homework and take your time you can get exactly what you want.

ok so i just went shopping today… we drove three hours just to get to tiffanys and when i got there i went straight to this ring. i saw it last night on the internet and it literally took my breath away. so when i get there i put it on my finger and it just felt RIGHT. i was shaking and i got all giddy and happy. we even went to jared just to see if there was anything i like better but i knew this was the ring for me. i picked out one that was like 14,000 but my fiance decided that i was worth the $27,000 one. which makes me perfectly happy too! i cant wait to wear this for the rest of my life! : )

Are you people for real? Getting married is much more than a stupid object on your finger. Since I have browsed several communities re:rings I have come to see reason why I waited so long for the right woman. The materialism and shallowness shines through. I just hope you all end up pre-nuped. Most of your comments are childish and disgusting. You Suck!

Yes we are for real. We are women who make a living, some of us make more money than our spouses. My husband knows how to appreciate a woman who not only brings home the bacon, but also brought a beautiful boy into this world. There is nothing wrong with wanting something beautiful on our fingers that represents love and admiration from our current or future spouses. You waited so long for the right woman probably because your nasty attitude couldn’t help you trap one earlier. It’s not just about materialism and status, it’s about this- times has changed, women are in more power than ever before, and the smart men out there know that we deserve more. We no longer just stay at home and cook and clean. I feel sorry for YOUR right woman, because YOU suck!

I am surprised this thread has gone on for so long. I just wanted to comment on the cushion discussion.

GIA will cushions as both Cushion Brillants and Cushion Modified Brillants depending on the cut. Cushion Brillants account for about 10% of all the cushions out there. Cutters these days cut modified brillant cushions because they retain more weight (translatation - they get more money for it). However, many cushion lovers are not a fan of the crushed ice look of the modified brillant (it is really just personal preference).

TCO has a patented cushion cut that has 8 main pavillions. You will be able to find similar looking cushions out there. I hear they are difficult to find in the west coast but some vendors in NYC can source them easier.

I shopped around and around for the “perfect ring” but kept coming back to T&Co. I literally must have spent 100 hours looking for rings in stores and even more than that on the internet. I tried loose diamonds in different settings and looked at a lot of custom made settings just to get an idea.
I will say that the customer service and guarantee that T&Co offers their customers is 1st class and unbeatable.
The sales professional I delt with for 2 months answered all questions over and over again without hesitation and made sure that I understood what we were talking about.
My girlfriend looked at several different rings from different jewelers and said that the novo ring was the most jaw dropping. Needless to say she is the kind of girl that would proudly wear something out of a candy machine on her finger from me. That made me wanna go even more all out for her when I got her a ring. I ended up getting a 1.35 ct, H color, VS1 for 17,000. I’m laying pillows out behind her when I ask so that when she passes out from seeing it, she won’t get hurt.

I too have been shopping around for the “perfect ring.” I fell in love with the Tiffany Novo Ring yet wanted to look around to compare price points and see if it was really worth it to spend the extra money.

After going back and forth we decided to stop in Tiffany’s one more time to look at the ring. This time, we found the perfect ring in our price range ($4,700.) The cut and clarity were impeccable.

After deciding that it was perfect, we decided to go for it. We were treated so wonderfully at Tiffany’s (even before deciding to buy the engagement ring.) After making the leap, they invited us into a private room with champagne, Godiva chocolates and many congratulations.

I would never trade the service and thoughtfulness for anything. Sure, we didn’t buy the $16,000 ring and maybe to them, it wasn’t a big sale, but they never let it show, and treated us like gold. It was truly the Tiffany’s experience.

And because of that, I highly recommend buying the Tiffany Novo Ring!

fyi, tiffany seems to have dropped its prices on the Novo. My bf and I looked at one a few months ago, it was like .85 carats and around $11,500. Now it’s down below $10k. I was also recently told that the price of platinum has dropped, so maybe that is the explanation. Although the price drop seems kind of high (>10% drop) for just a change in the price of platinum… but I have no idea!

I had mine custom made at edwardsdiamonds.com. It looks just like it but My boy friend requested to change some to show off the diamond more. and it’s almost half the price. The owner of this company is a Graduate Gemologist and they sell certified diamonds. You will get quality diamond and high quality custom ring. You might not find the diamond that you like on their web page but if you contact them they will find the perfect diamond for you. I heard that a lot of people like tiffany novo design and they have several custom orders similer to novo. I love my ring. It looks so beautiful.

My GF also loved this ring. I knew there was no way I was going to pay the ridiculous Tiffany premium, so I had a local jeweler find a great looking cushion. I ended up paying $6,800 for the stone and setting(18kt white gold). 1.15ct, D color, SI2. I was initially concerned with the SI2 grade, but when I inspected the stone it was completely eye clean. I also negotiated my way out of paying sales tax by doing a cash deal and having the jeweler ship an empty box to an out of state friend. I’m picking the ring up this week and am confident it will look exactly like the Novo from Tiffany’s. The jeweler even commented that he has copied many a Tiffany design over the years and saved people a ton of money.

I have the Novo engagement ring in a carat and matching wedding band and really love it!! I know everyone thinks Tiffany has crazy high prices, but if you look on Blue Nile for their signature ideal cut diamonds (which are the closest equivalent to Tiffany’s cut) they are priced the same. I think you definitely pay for what you get.

I agree with Caitlin… I love my Novo so much, and it really stands out from across the room. It was expensive, but we looked at other look-a-likes (everyone has one), but they just really did not compare (for significantly less, anyway).

Let me elaborate on the diamond buying process. A diamond is a commodity… Regardless if you buy a stone out of the trunk of a guys car, or at Tiffanys’s the specs are the specs. A 1.0ct cushion cut stone, D color, VS1, of very good cut and polish is going to cost you XX at Tiff’s. The same stome(equiv specs) will only cost you X somewhere else. Tiffany’s has invested a tremendous amount of capital on marketing their brand.(Tiffany) It has worked well. Their have been legions of people willing to part with twice what the same stone would cost succesfully negotiated anywhere else. Now, the “Novo” for instance( A tiff brand) simply refers to the style of mount the cushion cut stone is in. Any good local jeweler will be able to have that exact same mount done either in house, or sending it out to their custom designer. The end result is that you have spec wise, the same stone you would have bought at Tiff’s and the same exact mount for half the price. if your simply searching the web and different jewelery cases for a similar “Novo” style ring, then no you may not find anything that looks like what Tiffany is marketing. You need to select the stone, then have it sent out to be mounted exactly the same as the Novo. The only difference will be in the specs you choose!
