#1 Wedding Highlight: What You Crave

January 25th, 2007 @ 3:02 pm by Mrs. Daisy

Two sushi bars; a raw bar with lobster, shrimp and crab claws; foie gras; multiple carving and pasta stations… and this is what everyone is still talking about:

As a surprise to Mr. Daisy, I decided to have our wedding cocktail hour supplemented with 400 White Castle* burgers (200 with cheese, 200 without). Mr. Daisy is from NJ and, apparently, White Castle played a major role in his adolescent snacking (and, as anyone who has seen photos of him from that time period knows, he certainly appreciated a snack or two).

I wasn’t exactly positive that White Castle could cater out like that, but I thought I ought to give it a try. I was willing to splurge on this because I knew Mr. Daisy would be over-the-moon about it. (As it turns out, it really wasn’t that spendy). Also, my White Trash Party–usually held every November (2006 would have been the 9th annual!)–was preempted by our wedding, so I figured that the element of fast food being served by tuxedoed waiters at our fancy schmancy venue was just the touch of “downmarket” that our wedding needed to make up for bumping the usual party.

Shira, of the Wedding Library, took care of logistics and it was all set up! The District Manager of White Castle even delivered the burgers himself. The only downer was that, unfortunately, the element of surprise somewhat fizzled a week before the wedding when I forwarded Mr. Daisy one of the Wedding Library’s (extremely detailed) timelines of the big day. I failed to notice that it detailed the “load-in” of the White Castle burgers. When Mr. Daisy read that he called me up, so excited he was barely able to form words. He couldn’t believe I was down with something so fun and casual when I (admittedly) had been hardcore about every other element being “just so.”

We even got to do a newlyweds’ burger “toast”:

And White Castle was kind enough to send us a giant gift basket full of tons of White Castle gear:

Needless to say, our guests kinda, sorta craved the sliders–so much so that the moment a waiter entered with a tray of them, said waiter was mobbed. I am so glad I added this personal, original touch to our wedding.

Have any of you thought about what you might do to make the wedding more fun/whimsical, or more unique to you and your fiancƒ? or what have you already done? i would love to hear the clever ways you all can find/have found to put your stamp on things!

~~~
* Granted White Castle is no substitute for In-N-Out, our fast food burger of choice, but since our wedding wasn’t in Cali, that sort of ruled out a cookout trailer feast of Double Doubles Animal Style.
** Remember, it’s not too late to make White Castle Valentine’s Day reservations, since clearly, sliders are the food of romance.
Ditto!! That’s a fantastic idea. My fiance’s been advocating for an in-n-out cookout trailer for some time (we are getting married in CA), but my parents just aren’t down with that. Booo.
we’d do the in-n-out trailer, but we’re already having tons of food. plus we’re already over budget. *sigh*
We had in-n-out cheeseburgers delivered to our wedding afterparty. The waiters carried them to the hotel room on silver platters (we got married at a BandB). AWESOME. if I still lived in the south, I so would have had Krystal burgers! People were stoked.
I fancied a Krispy Kreme for our wedding favor for the longest time only to find out that there are no more KK on Long Island. But, we’ve got White Castle!!! Hmm……..Thank you for sharing!
We are having Schnack in Brooklyn cater our wedding. They specialize in sliders, onion rings, mac and cheese and yes even beer milkshakes. We thought it would be a fun way to celebrate and incorporate our love of a good burger!
Awesome addition to your menu!!!
We also grew up in NJ and love White Castle… in fact, we went there for Valentine’s Day last year (they have this “steamy Vday event” with tablecloth, candles, and balloons.. haha)
White Castle was actually the first thing i ate as a Mrs. after the ceremony, we were whisked to a private room with tons of food for us, from the cocktail hour spread, and the first thing i grabbed was a cheeseburger. and boy was it awesome… nothing says “i do” like a slider!
Mr. Daisy now says that White Castle will be our official anniversary spot. (that shall remain to be seen!)
haha, while i am not a fan of white castle [really bad experience...ugh] that is a super cute idea. my bf doesn’t really have any must have cravings…i on the otherhand have way too much to have at one party [in-n-out, jamba juice, cupcakes, gelato, chocolate chip cookies...the list continues].
i did promise him that i’d give him a layer of our wedding cake and make it carrot and then see if a baker can make the top tier half carrot [on one side] and whatever cake i pick on the other. for some odd reason the boy loves carrot cake. and for some other reason, i promised him that i’d let him feed me a bit of the carrot… double ugh. what have i done?
That is a super cute idea. We’re having mini-burgers during our cocktail hour - not White Castle - just our caterer. What’s funny is we mentioned it to some friends who were asking about the wedding plans and now that is all anyone talks about. They’re already looking forward to the mini-burgers. Hope they don’t disappoint.
That’s a neat idea, but I hate White Castle. Too gross. Heh.
Andrew LOVES pie way more than cake, so I think I’m going to make sure there’s pie for him. And for some reason, he loves mixing cake & ice cream up into a jumbly mess and eating it, so I’ll make sure there’s some ice cream for him, too. :)
We’re doing pie and ice cream sandwiches (the schmancy Martha kind) instead of a cake. Mr Mouse wants the pie, I want the ice cream sandwiches. Although if we were to do a cake, it’d be carrot. (Our local bakery makes it with pineapple, ginger and coconut in addition to currants, spice and carrot. yum)
This Hawaii knottie is thinking about having Spam Musubi at her wedding. I’m not a fan of it personally, but it might be a fun touch for our wedding.
Similarly, I thought about having a shave ice station, but I think it might be a bit to casual.
