Mrs. Kiwi, Los Angeles Age and Occupation in 06: 27, Bookkeeper Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, P.E. Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

A Photographer with Memories

January 25th, 2007 @ 6:16 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

I was never one for photography, and didn’t really “get” the ideal shot idea, so I wasn’t that invested in pictures. Then, when someone mentioned that after the wedding the only memories would be on film, I decided that we may need a photographer. Duh. I mean, we always planned on getting a photographer, but I never really cared.

Enter Melody, our photographer. As luck would have it, just when we were considering different people for the job, I found her on MySpace. I know it sounds fishy to find your wedding photographer on MySpace, but here’s the deal: I’ve actually known her for 19 years. Confused yet? Melody and I were in brownies together, and junior high, then high school. We saw each other a few times after college, until she moved to North Carolina with her husband. A few months ago I was on MySpace looking up old friends, and found her!

We’ve always had a great friendship, and when I saw what she did for a living, I asked her to shoot our wedding. She moved back to Southern California about 6 months ago, and said she’d love to do our wedding. I figured it was great because I kinda was a little uneasy about strangers taking pictures of us, and this solves that problem.

Not only did she agree to do our wedding, but this professional photographer is giving us a GREAT deal. Included in our package we get an album, professional retouching, and the CD with ALL images taken. The price? $500.00. Yes, five HUNDRED dollars. I almost died when I heard that. How great is that? So, since she’ll have to drive up from San Diego, I figured I’d also pay for her room in the hotel the night before- our wedding being at 10am.

So, this is taken care of. Thank god. Since I’ve known her for so long, I know she has a vested interest in our wedding as well. After all, what friend wouldn’t want your wedding to be great?

Are you using any friends or family members as vendors in your wedding?

One friend of ours is a professional photographer, a friend who got ordained online is going to officiate, and a friend of FI’s is a stylist I’m going to ask to do my hair.

one of my friends is starting to apprentice in wedding photography so i’ve been thinking about on using him when our time finally comes. i also thought about using another one of my friends to design our invites as well. and i have a friend who’s a baker…he’s not fond of making wedding cakes [he says too much stress] but i’m sure he’d be up to making another dessert and can totally recommend people too

Wow, that’s great, Miss Kiwi!! We’re hoping to have a friend or family member officiate for us, but none of our other vendors will be.

One of our guests agreed to be our photographer, then backed out four months later saying he wanted to “enjoy” the wedding instead… leaving us in a bit of a bind and frantically searching for someone without a budget for it. :( I’m sad it turned out that way, since I missed out on a few great photog’s… but I’m so happy with our choice now… who I never would have happened upon otherwise!

My mom’s been a wedding florist part-time for the past 15 years or so, so she’s definitely doing the flowers. The food for the appetizer reception is being made by friends and family members, which tends to be somewhat of a traditional southern thing. It definitely saves some $$!

i used our friends as our videographer… and there were pluses and minuses to it… the plus - free :) the minus - it wasn’t professional and in the end all the digital raw footage got erased because he put the tapes on his speakers which demagnetized the tapes :(

i wish we would have just paid for the real deal…
