Beehive

January 25th, 2007 @ 4:57 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  • Laura wants suggestions for good, modern, dance/party music that’s family appropriate. She’s considering going the ipod route and wants to avoid YMCA and Love Shack type music.
  • Aliya is going to Belize over Labor Day for her honeymoon and wants some advice from those who have been before, and some reassurance that it will be warm and sunny during rainy season.
  • Courtney is looking for the J. Crew big bow slingbacks in ivory in a size 9. Does anyone have a pair they’d be willing to sell to her?
  • LetterpressObsessed is looking for someone who’s worked with Mercurio Brothers before, that can give her guidance on invitation designers (like Hello Lucky). She’s trying to get the design and printing done for under $1000 on 100 invites. Any advice on designers or coming up with your own design?

Hi Laura,

here’s a past reader buzz on dance music that might help:

Hi, I discovered Mercurio Brothers letterpress printing, but now I’m trying to figure out the best way to come up with the design since you have to provide your own artwork.

Has anyone worked with them before that can give me guidance on where I could go to develop the invitation design for my wedding and then submit it to them? Does anyone know of a designer (something in the HelloLucky vein) that can help me create the design for my invite. How much would that cost me? I’m trying to do this for under $1K. How easy is it to come up with the design on your own? I don’t have Illustrator, Pagemaker etc. but thought maybe I could use the trial version they provide . . . Any thoughts? Sorry for all the questions . . . I need help!

Just one clarification . . . I want to spend less than $1K on 100 invitations total . . . not just for the design. Thank you!

For good music, look to the 60s- Motown, Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc.

LetterpressObsessed, perhaps you can try posting on Craigslist? I know of designers getting occasional freelance jobs that way. You could also contact local art school and ask them to post an announcement in their design department. It would be a great opportunity for their students to build up their portfolio, and perhaps the cost would not be as expensive as that of a pro.

belize! i love belize… but i hate telling people since it is so lovely and fear it will get too touristy. but i will share for weddingbee readers. if you want some hiking, jungle and exploring then you can stay in San Ignacio (small town with not a lot to do) to take a day trip to Tikal, Guatemala which has the largest ruins of Mayan civilization. You can also take another day trip to “ATM” (Actun Tunichil Muknal) - a jungle hike and trekking through a cave that was also featured on National Geographic. If you go to ATM - ask the driver/guide that you want to borrow water shoes or bring your own. For some scuba/snorkling… you can go to Ambergris Caye. They dont have sandy beaches since they have a stretch of sea grass from the shore to the reef. but if you like scuba or snorkling then this is a good place to go. Hope this helps!

Aliya:

I was in Belize over Labor Day a few years ago. We had good weather generally, although it did rain for a couple days. Nothing torrential, but it may leave you stranded in your hotel (perhaps not a horrible thing). Just cross your fingers.

Not sure how long you will be there, but if you have a week or so, I’d recommend a few days by the beach (either on the cayes or down in Placencia) and the remaining time in the Cayo District. Don’t spend any time in Belize City. There’s nothing there, so don’t waste your time.

For accommodations, Francis Ford Coppola has resorts in Placencia and Cayo. I’ve had friends who have stayed in both and raved about it. We stayed in Victoria House on the caye (pretty nice) and Five Sisters in Cayo (good, family run place). If you’re adventurous, I would definitely recommend spelunking in Actun Tunichil Muknal. It was the coolest thing we did all trip.

We’re going to spend a couple of days in Orlando after our St. Augustine, FL wedding (I will still be in school and can’t take a whole week off). I really want to stay somewhere super-nice for the first night ($175-250ish…we’re still on a budget, so not toooo nice). My only interest is that it’s classy and has a GREAT bed (hee). Has anyone been in Orlando or even just stayed in any nicer chains (Cowne Plaza, Westin, etc) that they would reccomend? Any we should stay away from? Thanks!

A tiny warning about Belize and secluded honeymoons in general.

My friend went to Belize for her honeymoon and stayed in a very remote, very gorgeous resort about an hour’s plane ride from civilization. The first day there she missteped off a bicycle and broke her ankle. It was the kind of injury that could happen to anyone.

She had to go on a bumpy, two-hour Jeep ride through the jungle to the nearest clinic, where all they could offer her was asprin and an ace bandage while they reset her ankle. Yeah, ouch.

She ended up flying back to Belize City, where they gave her pain medication and a cast, and then flew home. On day two of the honeymoon.

Afterward, she said she was so glad they purchased traveler’s insurance because they were able to get a refund for much of their stay and the activities they had planned.

They used the money to go on a “second” honeymoon to Turkey after her ankle healed. And stayed far away from bicycles.

Lesson learned: if you are staying in a remote place and/or planning to do any sort of strenuous activity, get traveler’s insurance.

LetterpressObsessed,

Here is a guy in Kansas City that can design and letterpress stuff for you. I don’t know about the price but they might be something to look into. http://www.itsfancy.com

Letterpress obsessed- i’m using mercurio brothers for my invites. after looking at a thousand letterpress designs, i decided to pick a few elements and design them mysef in MS Word. it was quite easy. you can send them a word file. or convert to a pdf (free download from primopdf) i started with the MS clip art from online - downloaded and then edited the picture to change the color, and design. i repeated a simple pattern in two different colors. you can also buy dover clip art CD-roms from Barnes and Noble stores. Lots of cool designs. i may also buy a font from myfonts.com to use. i am not an artist at all, but it was easy. the hardest part was conceiving of an overall idea. if you have that the design is easy. email me if you want more guidance and I can show you how i did it. hidekoeng@sbcglobal.net got good affordable and colorful envelopes from paperpresentation.com . FYI - as it stands now, I’m making 250 invitations for less than $500.

i’m taking my .doc to Mercurio Bros next week with an envelope so they can match the blue color…
