Calligraphy Tutorial & Supplies

January 25th, 2007 @ 3:54 pm by Mrs. Emerald

As a followup, for anyone interested in the basics of calligraphy, here is a good site to check out. Surprisingly, it took me a number of tries and keyword searches to find a site with any sort of tutorial and basic lettering. It gives you helpful diagrams with lettering strokes like these:

However, I don’t think my calligraphy looks like those above anymore (it used to), I think it’s kind of “evolved” into some un-named style that works for me!

And here’s a good tip for newbies: Don’t go straight for the fountain pen or those fancy schmancy calligraphy sets with interchangeable nibs and ink wells. Too complicated! I recommend you start off using a calligraphy pen thats ready to go, one with at least a fine point (they have different widths, extra fine, fine, medium, etc.) It looks kinda like a fine sharpie with a chiseled slant tip. Like this one from Amazon.

thanks for the info! I used to do calligraphy when I was much much younger, and I bought one of the ink pens w/ the nibs to try out… definately made a big mess. I’ll try the felt pen!

YES to the Elegant Writer pens!! I could NOT for the life of me remember what this brand was called, thanks Miss Lemon. Here’s a link:

Remember… Fine/Extra Fine is the way to go (for tips)

And another factor to consider is your envelopes… if they are heavily textured, or maybe even a linen, these calligraphy pens may not do the trick. Smooth paper works best… just another FYI!

Ooh yes… forgot to mention the width… I have a Medium point at my desk right now, and it’s impossible to do anything with :) Well, other than making big gigantic letters!
