Makeup Trial

January 25th, 2007 @ 4:10 pm by Mrs. Plum

EDIT: The $100/hour is a flat fee - for the trial and the day of. She charges it for her time - period.)

~~~
I called around to get some quotes for a makeup artist for my wedding day and for a trial.
Does $100 an hour sound reasonable to you? This particular artist has a 2 hour minimum at $100 an hour - she has done celebrity makeup for award shows, magazine covers, tv shows, etc.
How much should I be expecting to spend??
I am so clueless…confuse02
that sounds like a lot. I’ve heard that trials are usually discounted significantly because the artist wants to persuade you to hire them for the day of.
My trial was $30/hour. My artist used to work in hollywood and still dabbles in it some. for comparison purposes, she charges $350 the day of for the bride.
I’m paying 60 for my makeup trail and free for the hair but if i choose to go with her then its 100 for me and 75 for each of the girls, time doesnt matter although she says its about 45 mins per person.
another trial i’m going to is free for hair and makeup
these are both in ny
i should’ve specified. my trial ended up taking 2 hours (1.5 for hair, .5 for makeup). the day of will take about the same amount of time.
will your bridesmaids be getting their hair/makeup done as well? the hours will add up very quickly if this is the case. does she have a minimum amount of services? travel fees?
my trial cost $150. my day of hair + makeup will be $250 and they will come on location. my bm’s and moms will cost $145 each for hair + makeup.
that sounds reasonable, depending on your area. most makeup artists in la (even a friend of a friend who is giving me a discount) charge around $300-500 on the day of for bridal makeup. bridesmaids are usually $60-100 per service. sometimes the trial is included, sometimes it’s not. try doing a search on your local knot and weddingchannel boards to find what others’ are paying. it is shockingly pricey, especially for someone like me who never has had my makeup done save for mall makeup counters or when the bride was paying for me as a BM.
i have a trial scheduled in a few weeks. that trial for both hair & makeup costs $75 (flat fee, not based on time). if i decide to book her, she applies that toward my final balance. however, this was a limited offer “sale” price as well.
See if you can negotiate. I’ve modeled before and worked with freelance make up artists. I always tell them I’m brining my own foundations and lashes, and they cut a deal (sometimes). Its worth asking. $100 seems high by the way.
i didn’t do a trial because they are very popular in LA for bridal makeup and i’ve seen wedding albums in which the salon did the hair and makeup and they all turned out so beautifully. i’m paying $450 for 3 sessions ($150 each session) for hair and makeup. two of the sessions are for my pre-wedding photo shoots (engagement and formal) and my bMs are going to cost $70 each, mothers $100. and the price for mine also includes slight makeup for the groom to avoid “glistening” skin in photos.
i think $100 per hour is a bit much because you are looking at $200 minimum only for yourself.
