I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!
About Mrs. Kiwi

Fine, I Give

January 26th, 2007 @ 7:01 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Previously I posted about the point, cost, and use of wedding favors. My take on it was why waste money on things that possibly weren’t even going to be taken? On the other hand, I know there are a few members of my family who would be a little upset if they didn’t have something to keep from our wedding. Not that I’m angry about that - I know my aunt (who has paid for a lot of our wedding things, some even before our engagement!) has kept every single favor from every single wedding, anniversary party and birthday party she’s ever been to. Along those lines, she has been dreaming about collecting one from our wedding.

So with my aunt in mind, I’ve decided to do favors. Not really expensive ones, but I’m thinking I can probably get away with spending less than a hundred dollars for all the favors. I’m going to go with the traditional jordan almonds. My only problem was the colors because it’s hard to find them in colors that aren’t pink, green, white and yellow. I figured I could get a yellow, and maybe trick people into thinking that it was either gold or ivory. So this was the route I was going until I found jordanalmonds.com. They have the most color and flavor options I’ve ever seen.

The almonds come in Fine (90 almonds per pound) at $3.49/pound, Extra Fine (100 almonds per pound) at $4.99/pound and Super Fine (125 per pound) at $6.94/pound. The great thing about these jordan almonds is the thickness of the candy coating. It has a thin layer, which leaves more room for the almond. Many other places have a thick candy shell with a teeny almond. I’d rather enjoy the almond with the thinner coating. After all, I’d think the most expensive item is the almond, right?

The colors range from classic white, assorted, reds, blues of all kinds and the ivory I was craving. JordanAlmonds.com also has chocolate almonds with a thin layer of dark chocolate under the candy shell. Can you say TASTY?

Here’s the autumn mix Mr. Kiwi would like us to get. $29.99 per pound.

Also, if you want sugar free, they have them as well.

The tradition is five almonds per person, signifying five wishes for the bride and groom: health, wealth, happiness, fertility, and longevity. We are most likely going to attach that somewhere, but we’re still unsure about the containers we’ll use. So, I figured that if we buy the ultra fine (125 almonds per container), we can get 25 people done with one container. We’re hoping to get 6 pounds, but I believe they go from 5 to ten pounds. Either way, it isn’t nearly as expensive as I had thought.

I just found this poem to attach too:

Jordan Almonds for Thee

Five sugared almonds for each guest to eat
To remind us that life is both bitter and sweet.
Five wishes for the new husband and wife –
Health, wealth, happiness, children, and a long life!

Love it!

Just an idea for those of you who are also contemplating the favor idea! Any one else going the traditional route?

Please beware! Contact the company by phone when you order because I ordered from them before and never received my order. I tried emailing them, calling, using their live support, and got no answer. I ended up calling the credit card company to do an investigation and they couldn’t contact those people either. So I did end up getting the money back but had to pay extra to get another order from another company rushed. Hope this helps. Maybe their service is better now but please try calling them first before you put down an order online.

my mother owns a chocolate store and buys her jordan almonds and other candy from a candy warehouse called Garvey Nuts and Candy. it’s in the city of commerce off the 5. seeing that your wedding is in la, this might not be far from you. see if they have anything you might like. they still offer discount to non-commercial people. i always buy my bulk candy from there.

Hey guys! Patricia, thanks for the tip. I’ll check that out right now. Ms Mouse- yeah, she saves ALL candy and favors. All unopened. It kills me because I like to eat my favors if edilbe. If not edible, I still need to know what it is. She saves all favors in the exact packaging. Can you believe that?

Connie, thanks for the link. You gals are so helpful.

My mom told me fruitcake wrapped in tulle to be placed under your pillow is traditional.

Nancy, from what I’ve been told, tradition was the single gals would take a slice of the wedding cake, place it under their pillows and supposedly they would dream of their husbands to be. That must have been in the days of the denser, non-frosted cakes, like your fruitcake. :) I believe it was only single gals, though.

What if you made just a few special handmade favors, just for your Aunt and maybe for a few special guests?

I have to admit: as a wedding guest, I really don’t care about favors (or even really keep them). But if it’s favors are that important to one person, than I could totally see a custom favor being a HUGE hit!

John, that is a great idea! And I’m with you on the favors thing, I could care less. :) I’ll start thinking about the options!

Miss Kiwi,
If you can’t find your jordan almonds in the correct colors cheaply, what about jelly beans? they’re about the same price…
