The Orton Effect

January 26th, 2007 @ 2:35 pm by Mrs. Bee

The Orton Effect is a cool technique that takes an out of focus version and in focus version of an image, and merges them together to render a soft, watercolor-like effect. You can see an example of a before and after here.

I had to try this out for myself. This is a picture I took at a camping trip to Rudd Pond:

And this is after applying the Orson Effect in Photoshop:

It works well on nature shots, but I had to try it out on faces too. Before (My MOH and I):

After. We look way better! Maybe I’ll do this to all my pictures from now on. :P

It’s an easy, cool retouching effect that I think you’ll really like.

Mrs. Bee! You and your MOH look so flawless in the first pic that I almost don’t like it Orson-ized. =P

Mrs. Bee, I don’t remember seeing a picture of you before. You are beautiful. No blurry parlor photos!

i prefer the crisp one, especially for the one of you and your MOH. the orton effect reminds me of star shots from high school…

lol that’s exactly what i was thinking too. i never took those pics in hs, but i guess i just don’t like the way i look in general in pics… hence my like for the blurriness.

[i'm guilty of taking the pics quite a few times in high school so that the blurriness could make me look prettier ;)]

Looks great on the flower, but a little cheesey on people.

Reminds me of the photo shoots that are all the rage in China these days, where everday people go into a studio and get an entire album shot of themselves looking like superstars. Between the super-bright lighting and the overzealous use of the Orton effect, seeing those albums always makes me giggle. I’ve always noticed the effect, but now I know what it’s called! Thanks, Mrs. Bee!

I like the soft look it creates.. I don’t think it’s cheesy.

I didn’t know it had a name! I use it all the time in my wedding videos, mostly during the getting ready shots and the highlights. I think it’s beautiful! And it’s really easy to do with video, also.
