Flower Personalization

January 27th, 2007 @ 4:53 pm by Mrs. Bluebell

From what I can tell, brides tend to fall into one of two main flower camps: “classic & romantic” or “unique & modern.” I’m not sure I fit into either! I want a classic romantic look, but no roses, no pink… more of a wildflower English garden look. (HA that’s the first time I’ve tried to put into words my “vision!” For some reason, I am still a bit uneasy with the whole florist concept. ;-) )

But mainly, I just wanted to personalize it somehow. Because no matter how gorgeous all the flowers in the wedding magazines are, they’re still in wedding magazines for a reason - they’re beautiful and perfect and elegant - but they’re also something you can plug into almost any wedding with the right color scheme.

Seeing as we’re getting married at our family summer home which was built in 1848, and has been stocked with lovely items (and/or junk) ever since then, I wanted the decor (and therefore flowers) to somehow reflect the history of the place. That made me think of the pantry full of miscellaneous vases! They are definitely varying widely in size, color, and attractiveness, but I’m pretty sure we can wrangle up at least a one-per-table quantity of nice looking ones, and then a few larger ones to put around.

Now that I also have the name of a highly recommended florist who is fully supportive of arranging only bouquets (and/or whatever is requested), and then selling us a ton of extra flowers that we can arrange ourselves - I think I’ve finally got a floral plan! :-)

How did you decide what kind of flowers you want for your wedding? Is anyone going to arrange them themselves? Are you using any unique elements to make them specific to you/your wedding?

I love the fuchsia color of bougainvillea and it’s native to tropical islands, so having it as part of our theme for our wedding in St. Thomas made a lot of sense. It’s part of our monogram and will be a splash of color on our invitations, we’ll have bougainvillea petals decorate the aisle and bougainvillea as part of our candle centerpieces and maybe even decorating our cupcakes.

Bouquet flowers will depend on what I can get in St. Thomas, but they’ll be in the same color family as our theme flower.

We’ve decided not to use flowers in the centerpiece, mostly because I wanted them as low-maint. as possible. To me, “plain” is best.

I love the idea of using the different vases from the family!

I’m arranging my own. Picture of the bouquet in link. (Sorry last time I said it was $14, it was actually $7). While I probably fall more into the “unique and modern” category, the priciples are the same, and it was pretty easy. I recommend checking out your locallibrary for ideas and instructions. Then if you want to buy a book later you’ve already got a good idea of what you’re looking for. For tables we’ll just plunk a bunch in a vase, you really can’t mess up dahlias.

In terms of which flower- you could go to a farmer’s market or grocer and play. Some ladies take diy to an extreme and grow their own. I think some of my favorites of the romantic look that I’ve seen are mixed herb (lavender, mint, sage, etc) and all babe’s brath or queen anne’s lace.

Tea - ha, that’s kind of how I feel too! I just want them to be pretty. But for some reason this is the one part of wedding planning I just cannooot make myself care about the details of!

Miss Kiwi - thanks!! And I know your centerpieces are going to be sooo gorgeous!!

Ms Mouse - thank you so much for the link!! Your bouquet looks incredible and it makes me feel so much better seeing some really fantastic DIY results! Hopefully I have a bit of your natural flower-arranging skill too!!

Miss Bluebell, I’d love to know the name of your florist - we’re hoping to do simpler arrangements in eye-popping colors so DIY is very much an option for us. Your florist sounds ideal for that plan!!
