Swimsuits

January 27th, 2007 @ 7:26 pm by Mrs. Bee

Since Mr. Bee and I will be going to hot springs and/or the beach in Costa Rica, I have to buy a new swimming suit. I haven’t purchased one in over 5 years, because I’m a self-conscious person that’s never felt comfortable in a bikini (even when I was somewhat thin… 10 years ago ;)). I also have a lot of eczema scars on my body, and am not in the best of shape right now. But I grew up in Southern California and actually love the beach!

So I searched high and low online last night for a sexy one piece or a tankini. There was a Michael Kors swimming suit from his 2005 collection that I really liked. I called the Michael Kors store here in New York back then, but they didn’t have it in stock. You can see it on Jessica Simpson here - it’s more of a swim dress, but it has so much coverage! Perfect for me.

I was looking for something similar, or maybe a maillot or a tankini. I searched tons of sites and decided to buy this DNKY swimdress from Macy’s. It’s classic, has all the coverage I want and of course as a bonus, black is slimming.

But is this too plain, too modest? Should I get something that’s a little more fun? It’s just not that easy to find nice one pieces or tankinis, because most of the cute swimsuits are bikinis. Alas I’d never wear one! 8O

Where is your favorite place to shop for swimwear? Are you a bikini, one piece, or tankini gal?

You silly girl! That looks like something an old lady would wear. You don’t have to be that modest or self conscious.

I would love to own a one piece and if I did it would be from J.Crew. The suit that you showed might not be too flattering on the hips if that is an area of concern. It might draw too much attention. I would stick with a classic one piece!

I had the same problem for years!!! I wore a black one-piece forever… But one day I realized that if I don’t suck it up and put on a bikini now… I probably never will! We’re only getting older ya know!!!

I like Vix and Salinas Swimwear. And despite common belief that plain black is flattering… I found that lighter colors with wild patterns are much more flattering. (Black makes you look pale=bloated. Paler colors with print make you look tan=thinner) If you’re really worried, don’t go for a string bikini. Go for a bikini that has a band underneath so you have more support. (and it covers a bit more skin hehe)

For me, I wore my very first bathing suit last year on a reunion trip to Florida with my girlfriends. And I was so paranoid and shy about my body. I still am. I bought a basic black two piece bathing suit. They made fun of me (out of love I know) saying I kept blinding them with my pale skin. Though I am not a fan of tanning, I would have reconsidered going to one before Florida. I was so pale against the black suit. If not, I am sure swimming on the beaches of CR a couple of days will be good enough.

Those suits are cute, work with what you feel most comfortable with. For me, I would feel most comfortable in an oversized black t shirt and shorts or maybe those scuba gear.

it took me a long while but i finally started struttin my stuff in a bikini and there’s no turning back…well, until i get too old for one. lol. my fav is a halter top with a boy cut shorts. luvs it!

i’d either go with a bikini or a tankini. at least with the tank you can still cover up those “not yet ready for prime time” spots ;-)

I wear a string bikini and I’m old! I wear them because they look best on my body shape.

I say, transcend the scars… I’d strut around with them if they were mine. Because they are distinctive. They are YOU and nobody else.

The best idea is to buy what looks best on your body, because there is a certain cut that will be most flattering. For example, it I wore one of the suits pictured (although they look good up there) I would look like a Mack Truck.

I think the ones you posted look a little stuffy and I think you’d look gorgeous in a two piece Mrs. Bee! Maybe this Calvin Klein tankini? It’s sleek, lots of coverage, but sexy too!

I’ll wear bikinis or tankinis. I’ll wear them for as long as I can until I can’t wear them anymore. haha

I have eczema scars too but I don’t care. People are not going to concentrate on my scars anyway. Just be comfortable in your own skin and everything else will look good on you.

I tend to stay away from black because I’m pretty pale myself, so black will only make me more pale.

I actually like those 2 you’ve shown, if you think you’d never wear a bikini (like me, I wear a two piece, but the bottom is always a skirt, and I’m pale :)) then go with the one-piece, they’re designer, you can’t go wrong with that!

I think those are cute, but you are young and should wear beautiful sexy skimpy swimwear while you can!!! Once we all have babies, then maybe if you felt uncomfortable, you can justify wearing the more modest ones.

i’m actually not that pale. i tan really easily, so one day out in the sun and i should have some nice color. i’ll have to see how the suit fits once it arrives, but i think i’ll order a backup… something with color or a fun print. :)

i can understand you being uncomfortable about your ezcema (cuz my sister has it and i know how she feels) but as for your body, i think you are underestimating yourself! i do like the black one though. But I could never wear a bikini either, takini’s all the way for me. i bought a solid brown one from jcrew and i love it.

It’s cute, but don’t be scared to wear a normal bikini. I saw all sorts on my last cruise, and expect to see more on ths cruise, and most people I saw were fine save a few that I don’t know *what* they were thinking. Don’t wear a bikini at like 250lbs or more, or if you are like , 70. But I swear I saw both. No one will even notice eczema scars. I bet you’re a hottie in a two piece, c’mon.

I’m only 21 so I’m livin’ up the two piece before the hereditary spider veins kick in.

:) Victoria’s Secret also makes some nice swimsuits, and their website carries some stuff from other lines too. I like the VS suits because you can order the tops by bra size, which is helpful to those of us more petite women who exceed the Asian norm. And if memory serves correctly, you fall in that category, Mrs. Bee! (^.^) they’ve got supporitive bikinis, cute tankinis and slimming one pieces for your viewing pleasure!

… i swear they’re not paying me for this. =P

Have you thought about a tankini with a boyshort-style bottom? That way you get coverage of the hips, but it doesn’t look so antiquated. Like alessette, I like a lot of VS’s stuff, and also Ann Taylor Loft, which is where I got my suit, a halter tankini top with adorable boyshorts. They have similar stuff this season! http://anntaylorloft.com/
