10 Unconventional Diet Tips

January 29th, 2007 @ 5:33 pm by Mrs. Bee

Kyle Pott of Lifehack.org lost 50 pounds in 3 months by following 10 “unconventional diet tips.”

He created his own diet based on the Weight Watchers program (which he cleverly researched by googling their patent), and his real life tips are definitely worth a read.

Rule #3 on his list is to make your diet public. Miss Lemon boldly declared her 2007 fitness resolution, and said that she’d check in every 2 weeks on weddingbee. So I was thinking, maybe you too could declare your diet/fitness resolutions publicly here on weddingbee. And you can check back in every two weeks when Miss Lemon does. Whatever your diet or fitness goals are, let’s keep each other motivated! :D

Okay that is eerie timing… I JUST posted my starting weight and a declaration of my weight loss goals on my wedding blog this morning. I will definitely stay accountable here as well as my own blog. Check out the entry: http://sparklytospouse.blogspot.com/2007/01/confession-of-chocoholic.html

Some of his tips are good, but the one about weighing yourself every day is not. A woman’s weight fluctuates naturally during her cycle, and everyone’s weight fluctuates throughout the day (depending on meals, eliminations, etc.) Weight loss isn’t about small day-to-day changes, but about larger changes over longer periods of time.

when i’m dieting, i actually weigh myself everyday and find that it does help keep me motivated. in the past dieticians recommended not weighing yourself daily, but recently i’ve heard a lot of experts in favor of weighing yourself daily. i think knowing the fluctuations is also a great way to know your body better too. ;)

Mrs. Bee - that’s a good point! I meant more that people have to be aware that a 0.4 pound difference from one day to the next might not mean weight loss or gain, and it is important to keep that in mind!

i weigh myself everyday as well- the trick is to weigh yourself first thing in the morning, after going to the bathroom, and naked. this is your “true” weight, but it can fluctuate up to 5 pounds in one day due to eating/drinking/wearing clothes, etc. i think it keeps motivation up as well.

There have been a few recent studies by colleagues of mine that showed that people participating in a weight loss/maintenance program who weighed themselves daily did better than those who weighed themselves less than that. This advice is okay for adults who have healthy attitudes about their bodies. If you have any history of disordered eating or are a teenager, weighing yourself daily could have very negative results.

I think that most of his tips are reasonable. I would be concerned about only dieting during the week. A sustainable program should be reasonable and moderate - not something you struggle to do during the week and therefore you end up binging on weekends.

Finally, 50 lbs in 3 months is shocking and unhealthy. I’d be extremely concerned about someone (especially a woman) who either lost or gained that much in that short a time period.
