Beehive

January 29th, 2007 @ 4:07 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  • melodious carol is looking for good, inexpensive places to get a wedding dress and bridesmaid dress in the LA/OC area.
  • erj2102 is looking to purchase or make a cord and veil for a Filipino ceremony in Manhattan.
  • m is looking for a Korean DJ/MC in the NYC area. Any suggestions?
  • e is looking for hair/makeup people in the Connecticut/Western Mass area who come to you on the wedding day. Also what are the average prices for wedding hair/makeup as she’s clueless!
  • tea is looking for a good online resource that tells you which flowers are in season by month/season.

erj2102,
I’m not from Manhattan, but I know some ladies have purchased cord/rope and tulle or chiffon from a fabric store. It works just as well, although less embellished (unless you embellish it yourself, that is). You wont really have to do any DIY to it except tying the ends of the cord together. It’s an option if you don’t mind something simple. I had a friend do this, and no one could tell. I didn’t even know until she told me (and I was up there with her!).

I bought my cord from the Philippines, and it’s just a realling long chain of pearls and crystals. If you’re up for a DIY, you can do that, too. I’m planning to just buy a piece of chiffon or something for the veil.

Hi! I’m looking for suggestions of hair/makeup people in Connecticut/Western Mass who come to YOU on the day of the wedding. I’ve booked w/ my hairstylist, but apparently it’s REALLY expensive if she comes to me, so I have to go to her…which I didn’t really have in my schedule for the day (it’s a 30-40 minute drive each way)…

Also- what are average prices for wedding hair/makeup? I’m afraid I’m clueless on this!

oojoy, thanks! Sounds like DIY is perfectly acceptable, maybe preferable. How long should the cord be, and what dimensions would the tulle/chiffon be? Should be the cord be white/ivory, or wedding colors are OK? Also the veil is a separate piece of tulle/chiffon, right, not the tail end of my long veil attached to him, right? (Sorry, this is my Filipino initiation!)

Tea,

If you go to 2groses.com, click on wedding flowers the last link on the list of links at the top of the page is “Seasonal Availability by Month” or something like that. Click on that and you can pick the month you want and see a list of the flowers available by month. There are other list out there, too. I just don’t remember the sites

erj2102,

You’re right, the veil is a completely separate piece of material, not just your viel attached to him. :-) I’ve only seen the veil and cord done in white/ivory, so I have no idea if wedding colors are acceptible. Maybe not, just to be safe?

As for dimensions, they both just have to be large enough to fit over both of your heads and shoulders at the same time. I think the veil is maybe 3″x4″ or something like that? I don’t know the exact dimensions, but does that give you a good idea of how much to buy?

tea- try using this website where you can pick your flowers by the season, color, region, or even to match your bridesmaid’s dresses.

oojoy, you are a lifesaver. Is the cord one long piece and the sponsors loop/connect it for you, or it’s pre-fastened into a circle, then the sponsors twist it into a figure 8? Is it bad luck/symbolism if there is a joint/opening? I was offered some gorgeous drappery cording w/ those fancy tassles, off-white… if that’s appropriate would like to use it.

e - try looking up dana bartone - she owns a salon in cheshire ct but will travel to you to do hair/make-up. the travel fee is 85, I THINK, not sure. also, make-up/hair costs differ based on if the style you want and if you want airbrush or traditional make-up, but if you call her salon she should be able to give you prices.

erj2102,

I suggest checking out http://www.mybarong.com. It is a Los Angeles-based company that specializes in selling “Filipiniana” clothing and wedding accessories. The cord is $7.95 and and veil is $19.95. Here’s the link http://www.mybarong.com/weddingcolle.html. Great thing is that there is a money back guarantee. If you want more info about the Filipino wedding traditions, it’s also on the site. You might also want to consider just purchasing about a yard of lace for the veil. Some of my friends have done that for their weddings. You may be able to save money that way too. Hope this helps.

We are having two friends do readings during our ceremony - should we include them for the rehearsal dinner as well then? Also, are you supposed to have the individuals recognized by wearing flowers?

melodius - check out Jinny’s Bridal in Huntington Beach. They have a wide selection of dresses at wholesale prices. A bunch of my friends got their dresses there.

We decided on only serving beer and wine, plus a champagne toast. What is the formula for buying beer and wine? I am trying to set up the budget and since I do not drink have no clue how much of each thing I should purchase.

erj2102,

It’s usually pre-fastened. I’ve seen it as a complete circle before, but usually it is already fastened into the figure-8 looking thing. The drapery cord with tassels would work wonderfully. :-)

The link that FebBride posted has pics in it of a standard cord. That one has tassels, too. Good luck! :-)

Can anyone recommend a graphic designer who does custom save-the-dates and invitations and works well with a budget? I pretty much know exactly what I want, but I don’t have the skills or the software to bring it to life. Thanks!

beereader: we had 3 readers at our ceremony.
we invited them all to the rehearsal dinner. and no, they didn’t wear any flowers for the wedding.

i think if they are going to be attending the rehearsal, then they should be invited to the dinner that follows, provided you are having that format.

carol: i got my dress at allusions in brea. i saw the dress at 2 other places, but allusions was the cheapest by a lot.

they are always super busy. and the place is unorganized and messy (they have a major ant problem). but my salesperson (julie) really knew what she was doing and was lovely and not pushy at all.

good luck. :)

Lewie,

I would love to work with you to design your custom save-the-dates and invitations.

My website is under construction and should be up by Thursday, but I would love to send you some pictures in the mean time. Feel free to email me at info@hautepapier.com

Thanks!

BeeReader: I was the only reader at a wedding last summer and I attended the rehearsal, was invited to the rehearsal dinner, and received a wrist corsage to wear for the day. I felt more prepared having been to the rehearsal to make sure I knew where to sit, when I was to go forward, etc, so I highly recommend inviting your readers to the rehearsal. I would suggest also inviting them to the rehearsal dinner… I think anyone attending the rehearsal should be invited, personally… I probably would have felt a little awkward in all honesty if I hadn’t been invited. And with regards to the flowers… I was in no way expecting them, but found them to be very thoughtful (and pretty of course!). I also received a key chain as a thank you gift, also not necessary but nice. Good luck with everything!
