Goodie Bags For Out Of Town Guests

January 29th, 2007 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Lemon

Monterey may be my hometown, but it’s going to be quite a destination for the majority of our invited guests. Most of those on the guest list will be travelling from LA, the Bay Area or NY/PA, and we know that it’s a bit taxing to get to our locale. So I’ve constantly kept in mind various ways of making sure our guests feel warm and welcomed, and I simply adore the idea of receiving a goodie bag upon arrival. What better way to welcome our friends and family to Monterey than with a little bag of goodies to start the trip!

But what should I put the goodies in? A bag? A box? A basket? I decided against using any paper goods long ago (gable boxes/bags), just due to the expense for a disposable container. Which quickly led me to look for tote bags and such… something that someone could pack away and possibly use for another day? Now I do recall quite the insane frenzy that tote bags generate at conventions, so perhaps someone will be overly excited to get one from me? :)

Flash forward to last week and my latest wedding purchase:

b342936

Harriton tote bags from BlankShirtStore in Navy/White and Royal Blue/White for a whole $2.61 each! They were shipped to me in one day, and are extremely nice and durable for the price. I only ordered 2 at first, just to check to see that I was satisfied by the color and quality of them, but I’ll be back to order more soon after the RSVPs start rolling in.

Which leads me to my next DIY project… decorating the bags! I was going to embroider the bags directly with our little rose logo, but it’s not going to work on my home machine. My next instinct is to embroider another piece of fabric, and simply attach it to the bag. I guess I’ll have to head to the fabric store to see what I can find. :) At least this way, I can make all of the little patches ahead of time and only worry about attaching them in the last few months… a bit easier than embroidering the whole bag.

Bag = check! Bag contents = next on the list!

What about iron ons with their names? You could even get the iron-on computer paper and make your own cute designs for them… guess you’d have to do a test to make sure it works…

i’m with miss lily. iron-ons would work perfectly. i make a lot of my own tshirts with iron-ons and everyone is impressed. it’s simple enough and takes even less time than using a sewing machine [plus you can watch tv]. that way you can actually use your logo too.

My blog (click on my name) I have posted about OOT bags. I like those cheap totes, though! I am trying to find something other than the gable boxes, although look very nice.

I am stocking mine with water and local treats, such as Almond Roca, Johnny’s Seasoning salt (something for them to take home), Tim’s Cascade Style chips, etc. Maybe a bottle of wine and/or apples (since they are local, too)!

The IMPORTANT thing, I think, is the info that helps them get around–maps, important numbers, local attractions and timelines!

wsukarebbear - don’t forget that they can’t take the bottle of wine home in their carry-on luggage if they flew. You could stick a tag on it that says “Enjoy while you’re here!” or something. Somehow, putting a bottle of wine in your checked luggage sounds like a bad idea. Sounds tasty though!!

This may be a stupid question, but how do you distribute the goodie bags to out of town guests? Do you give it to them when they arrive at their hotels? What if they are staying at all different ones?

My wedding will be in NJ… and I will have a lot of out of town guests — I originally wanted to give something to OOT guests, but I’m not sure if it’s really that useful — since almost everybody has family/friends in the area. I was planning on including a customized map/directions with the invitation.

Do ALL OOT guests receive a gift bag… if not, how do you determine who gets one and who does not?

Hi,

Just wanted to say hello. I found this site in a very random manner. I am from Los Angeles and will be getting married in Pacific Grove in April. We decided on the location after having visited PG/Monterey for my birthday last year. Anyhow, I am looking forward to reading more of your blog!

Monica
