Open Question: Registry Returns

January 29th, 2007 @ 4:49 pm by Open Question

I have a question about registering. I’ve heard that some stores (Target specifically) have very particular return policies, regardless of whether the items are from a registry. Does anyone have experience with Target’s policies? It’s making me leery about registering there, even though they have great stuff!

Thanks!

Emily

Unfortunately, I have not heard about their return policy with registries. I was initially very drawn to Target because we heard that you can register online (huge time-saver for us if that is true). I will post again if I hear more about their return policy once we start our registry.

i’ve heard the same thing from other wedding forums. bed bath and beyond has a great returns policy and i believe they give you cash back and 2 years to return gifts from the registry. it’s really easy to set up online too.

I have heard that if the item was not purchased off the gift registry then it is tough to return (something like you are only allowed a specific number of non-registry returns). I even heard about a bride who was put on the “do not return” list becuse she tried to return too much. I won’t be registering with target because they don’t have a completion program. Hope that helps!

Target returns are a nightmare. If you don’t have a receipt and it’s something they no longer carry, you have to go through their website and customer service was AWFUL and they expected me to pay to ship it back and forth. Not worth it!!! Bed Bath & Beyond is much better.

I’ve heard the same thing from multiple brides. They only allow a certain number of non-registry returns per year. If you go over that, you’re not allowed to return anything anymore. If the purchase was from the registry, I think you can return as many as needed.

I’ve heard of some brides getting around this by adding items to their registry just so they can return it. If they got something that wasn’t on their registry and they wanted to return it, they added it to their registry then came back another day to return the item (which supposedly would be accepted since it is listed on the registry). I have no idea if this actually works, though. I just heard about it.

Target is HORRIBLE with returns. You are allowed 2 returns w/o receipts and then you are on the “No Return Allowed” list. The items I did return w/o a receipt, they marked down the price significantly. I return something that was $39.99 retail and they offered to give me $7.99 back. I was furious!! For those returning WITH a receipt, be aware as well, they will also try to give you a phony mark down price. They try to do the same thing with at least 4 other items I returned even though my registry clearly showed that my guests paid full price for them. I had to argue and get the manager involved. I hate Target.

BB&B was wonderful and very accommodating. They are slightly more expensive than Target but with their 20% coupons in the mail, I always try to shop there now.

i don’t have any firsthand experience returning anything to Target, but i remember this one time i was walking by the returns department and the cs agent was giving the customer a hard time.

we also registered at bbb and gotta say great experience all around - esp with the return policy. ;)

I work for Target and I can tell you their policy is less than forgiving. If the item was not purchased off the registry and you don’t have a gift reciept you only get 2 returns without a reciept a year. And those items must be under 100 dollars, unopened, and exchanged for something within the same department. I registered at Macy’s and Bed Bath and Beyond and have been very happy so far! Good Luck!

This may sound crass, but— i really wanted to register at Target too, but my dad told me that if I did, his guests would be “confused” and think I pretty much wanted cheap gifts… I told him he was superficial and his friends were rediculous, but in retrospect, I think he was probably somewhat right. He lives on the west coast and I live in NY so most of his guests did not show and just sent checks or something from the registry- which was Macys— thought if I could do it again, I’d probably also do BB&B— we got some gifts from there even though we had not registered and were able to bring them back, no querstions asked, and use 20% coupons on top of the refund- they’ll even honor an expired coupon, or refund the 20% if you bring the coupon later with the rec’t for something you purchased a year ago! CRAZY! They also ship gifts with a return UPS label so if you don’t want it, just slap the sticker on the box and they’ll pick it up and send you a refund check.

O dear… I did register at Target… Actually most of our registry IS Target, with minimal stuff at Macy’s. My fiance and I are younger (I’m 21 and he’s 23), so there was a lot more that fit our personalities there…

Now I’m kinda scared… Are there any GOOD experiences at Target?

Maggie - Don’t be scared. As long as your guests stick to your registry and you registered for gifts you wanted, you really shouldn’t run into much problems. Also, don’t register for items that are seasonal or the special collections that Target often has. These will most likely be discontinued fairly quickly, as they only keep these collections going for a few months at a time.

As for Target’s return policy…yes, it is HORRIBLE. I don’t know much about how the registry works with returns, but their regular return policy works like this.

Without receipt, you can return two items a year. Like another comment said. Mind you, they take down ALL of your information and you MUST have an state ID/Driver’s License.

With receipt OR gift receipt, you can return exchange an item for the CURRENT selling price (not what was paid). If you exchange, you can only exchange in the SAME department and the new item has to be of equal or higher value. You can’t exchange one item for two or three smaller items. For example, I bring in a ceramic platter that was a seasonal item that originally cost $29.99. If I return it I can get the current price which is $6.99 (because its already been marked down). Or, I can exchange it for one item in the same department that costs $6.99 or more. Make sense?

It really is a HORRIBLE policy. I hate that they don’t give store credit and that you have to stay within the department.

That being said, we ARE going to register at Target. I just didn’t find BB&B had a selection that I liked. They have a limited selection and I just didn’t like that!

I love Target so I was anxious to register there. I found out from a friend about the “2 returns per year per ID” but she told me anything on her registry she was able to return for store credit (this was 16 months ago). I had a bridal shower over the weekend and went to return something on my registry because I already had it. I was told they used to use the registry as a receipt, so as long as the item was on that registry they would take it back for store credit. On Monday (5/26/08) I was told they no longer do that, and for the two returns per year, the item must be under $20. My fiance and I are going to delete our registry with Target and keep Bed, Bath, and Beyond that has a great return. They are a little more expensive, but the 20% off coupons make it more affordable. Hope that helps!
