Workin’ My Connections (Sorta)…

January 29th, 2007 @ 3:00 pm by Mrs. Emerald

I found a stylist to come to my hotel to do wedding day hair! This was something that was on my February To-do list, so I’m glad I am a bit ahead of the game. Who is she and how did I find her?

Well, back in 2002 when I was fresh out of college, I was desperate for a job. So I suffered a 6 month stint as a manager at a Mario Tricoci’s, an upscale Chicago salon chain. At the time, I was friendly with a young stylist there who I’ll call “J,” who did kickass updos and special occasion hair. I’ve gone back to her every once in a blue moon for a cut, but it’s been over 2 years since my last visit. At this point, I wasn’t even sure she still worked for the company!

Luckily she was still there, so I booked a haircut appointment with her this past weekend (I desperately needed a trim). I knew that stylists there technically aren’t supposed to “freelance” on the side, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask. She was thrilled and said she would absolutely do it! Besides, with me and my 5 bridesmaids, it’s definitely worth her while (financially speaking, since she gets to keep 100% of the profits instead of 50% automatically going to the company). Whereas the salon would charge $75+ for an updo, she will charge me $45-50 per girl. YAY!! Cheap is good, considering that I’ll be footing the bill for 6 updos.

Now my concern is the whole signing a contract issue. Even though she is kind of doing this for me as a “favor,” I should still ask her to sign something, right? And maybe give her a security deposit? Like I said, we are “friendly” but that doesn’t necessarily equate being friends (it’s not like we’ve kept in touch). I guess I’ll have to call her in the near future to hammer out the details… fun fun.

Do you have any vendors you’re hiring without a contract? Or are you creating contracts for any of your vendors?

A formal legalese contract isn’t necessary; can get by with an email (written beats verbal) summarizing the expectations on both sides. The tone can be friendly and it should state the cost, times, locations, number of updos, other guidelines, etc. This way you have something to fall back on without the potential awkwardness/ugliness of acting like you need a formal contract.

I had the same deal with my photographer.

I hadn’t actually seen him for 2+ years. He used to date one of my best friends and still remained friendly with myself and my MOH, but I made sure that most of our conversations were over AIM and I saved all our conversations stating price, directions, travel arrangements.

Luckily, he was great and even showed up to the ceremony site before I did!

But as long as you have something written, I wouldn’t stress too much.

Yes, Yes, Yes. Put somehting in writing, it doesn’t have to be formal. Make sure you date it (my friend forgot that one).

The only vendor I don’t have a contract with is my videographer- she’s my sister and there is no way she would flake on me. Actually she’s my MOH so her husband and assistant will do the taping and she will do the editing.

The only vendor I don’t have contract with is my makeup/hair — She’s been known to be very professional. And I trust her words. Is that no good?

My officiant didn’t have a contract but my father is in the business of writing contracts so I had him put together a little diddy and then both parties signed it.

We’re collecting contracts from everyone… and the band we’re hiring isn’t normally a wedding band, so we’re writing a contract for them as well.

Don’t offer up a deposit unless they require it… but do get the details in writing in some manner.

hi miss emerald! i am also a chicago bride - getting married on 9/15 in downtown. i’m still searching for a make-up and hair person. did you trial w/ur person before u decided or did u just know? is she charging u the same flat rate for each of ur BMs?

S - I decided to ask the stylist even before doing a trial with her. I’ve seen her work before and know first hand that she is quite skilled. I WILL be setting up a trial at some point though… dont want to be surprised on my wedding day! We haven’t quite worked out the pricing, but I think its same flat rate for each BM.

Most of the other hair/makeup people that I’ve contacted charge almost an arm and a leg to come to the hotel, $75+ per person… =/ Thats why I’m doin my own makeup!

I agree with Iris — email summarizing everything should be sufficient.

Question — I am trying to decide whether I want to hire a stylist to come do my hair with all my bridesmaids in my hotel suite, which could be fun/more relaxing… or if I should just go to a salon. My Matron of Honor said that 9 out of 10 weddings she’s been in, she’s just gone to the salon and paid for hair herself. My Maid of Honor said that her friend opted to go that route too (each BM pays for herself) .. and decided to get them all nicer presents instead. What is everyone else doing?
