Childhood Friends

January 30th, 2007 @ 9:31 am by Mrs. Apple

Mr. Apple and I moved into our new home about 6 months ago, and just last weekend I finally had some time to clear out some old boxes. In one of the boxes I came upon some old birthday cards, photos, and lots of snail mail from my best friend in middle school. We met in 8th grade and she lived down the street from me - her name was Cathy Wang. I would remember fond memories of us hanging out after school, going shopping at the local mall, playing tennis on the weekends, walking over to the volleyball court in my neighborhood to check out the cute boys. She was also my partner in crime on the big yellow school bus #13 every morning and afternoon home. We were inseparable. She was my best friend.

But above all she was 100% supportive of me and my artwork. In high school we would have these statewide Latin Language & Art Competitions. I would usually place in the top 3 for my artwork, and she usually placed first or second in her language competition (cuz she’s a nerd like that but I love nerds!). There were times when I doubted myself and my abilities, but she was always there to give me that extra boost of confidence because she always believed in me. Even after years of distance we were able to keep in touch through snail mail. In the old letters I read from her yesterday, she asked if I kept up with my art and whether I’d made millions yet. Such a funny friend.

It was in high school at age 14 or 15 that she told me devastating news - she got accepted into an honors program at UNT. It’s an advanced program for high school students who can begin taking college courses. So she left me for bigger and better things. I remember being so happy for her, but at the same time I was sad I was losing my best friend. After UNT she moved to San Francisco, attended UC Berkeley and landed her first job at Cisco Systems at age 20 or so. We kept in touch throughout our college years but lost touch soon after. I have no idea where she lives, if she’s married with kids, or jet setting around the globe as a high powered consultant.

I wish I could find her so we can reconnect and talk about old times at High School High, and laugh at ourselves for having silly crushes on Ryan and Andrew. I would love to see how she is doing and even invite her to my wedding. It would be our own little reunion! I love reunions!

Has anyone used those web search tools to find old friends and classmates?

Do you wish you could locate an old classmate or an old friend so you can invite them to your wedding?

I actually found a ton of high school friends on My Space. I wasn’t even trying but I have really re-connected.
There is a school search where you can put in your high school and graduation year and then find people that graduated with you.

I second Myspace.

I got in touch with some people through myspace, I totally encourage you to do it. However, be aware that inviting them to your wedding does not mean you get to spend loads of time with them. Unless you’ve got a lot of outside activities/events planned, it’ll be more of a reunion for them with other friends that might be at your wedding than with you. Not to say don’t reconnect, but using your wedding as a reunion isn’t always the best route (at least that’s what I’ve heard from a lot of my already married friends)

I totally agree about Myspace! You might want to search myspace for your friends name, since she changed schools she might not list your old school, but maybe she’s married and has a different last name. You could always try to search the year she would have graduated at UNT. Good luck!

I would definitely try myspace or facebook - both have search modes where you can search by high school or college, along with graduation year! I’ve been able to reconnect with a bunch of long lost friends using those sites!

This is so weird, I literally JUST heard from an old friend from High School yesterday. I also found her on Myspace and left a message and she replied. Myspace is great!

I *heart* MySpace…it’s a great tool to find old friends. I attempted to us Classmates, but you can really do much of anything unless you pay a fee. And I’m thrifty, so MySpace is the way to go!

I agree that myspace and facebook are great. But, you can also try http://www.zabasearch.com. I’ve used it to find contact information for my guestlist. It’s pretty accurate and up to date.

there’s a reason why people from the past didn’t make it to your future.

Thanks for posting this Miss Apple! I just found a long lost friend of my fiance’s with the websites recommended. My fiance was so excited when I told him. He’s always mentioned his childhood friend as in “I wish I could find him again”.

I narrowed it down by website and figured it out. Thanks for all the info everyone!

Another way to find people — If they are licensed professionally (doctor, lawyer, electrician, beautician, etc.) they can be found through the state/county where they are licensed.

Ooh, are you talking about the TAMS program?
I have a friend who got accepted into that, and I haven’t seen him in over a year :(.
I’m proud of him, but it sucks to lose a friend to college before you’re even old enough to go!
