Late to Work

January 30th, 2007 @ 1:35 pm by Mrs. Bluebell

I was late to work for a pretty ridiculous reason today, and thought I’d share. :-)

Mr. Bluebell and I live in a third floor walk-up about a ten minute walk from the subway. So this morning after I left for work, I walked down three flights of stairs and about 8 minutes of the way to the subway. WHEN! I suddenly realized I’d forgotten to put on my engagement ring!!! For a split second I stood frozen on the sidewalk - be 20 minutes late(r) for work, or just go without the ring all day? Aaaand then I turned back around. :-D

I called Mr. Bluebell and made him race down the stairs in his pajamas (he’s working from home) with the ring, so I wouldn’t have to run back up and down the three flights of stairs. When I got there, he was standing in the entryway holding out my ringbox (and freezing). After a quick fake proposal and goodbye kiss take 2, I was back on my way to work again.

I sort of tried to avoid telling anyone at work the reason I was late because I was a bit embarrassed, thinking most people probably wouldn’t understand why I needed my ring that much. But I was thinking back to the day I forgot to wear earrings (and didn’t go back for them), and how I just felt slightly off all day - even though there wasn’t any symbolic meaning to earrings. So I didn’t think I could stand the way more extreme lack of engagement ring! Plus I kept imagining that everyone (you know, all those guys who work in the other room and probably never notice jewelry of any sort and never see me anyway) would notice my ring was gone and wonder secretly if we’d broken up but be too polite to ask!

I’m hoping the weddingbee community might be able to sympathize a little. :-) Would you have gone back? Have you ever forgotten to wear your ring, and did it bother you?

Man, I can’t wait to get married - once I have a wedding ring I am NEVER taking that sucker off!

I totally did the same thing yesterday! Now granted I don’t live in NY and have to walk everywhere, but I did manage to make it all the way out of my parking lot, and turned right back around to run in to get it! I couldn’t imagine going without it all day long!

I totally would have gone back, and the fake proposal? Too cute! I wonder what anyone walking by on the street must have thought. . .

I left home without it once, but I was on my way to catching a bus that runs on a schedule…so rather than head back and wait for the next bus and be late to work, I had to go all day without it! It did feel weird but I’ll admit, I also consciously hid my left hand whenever people visited my cubicle, (just so they don’t think the engagement was broken off or anything!)…people love to spread rumors around here…love the fake proposal btw.

For sure I’d go back. Just sleeping without my ring makes me feel weird. How could I go the whole day?

I’ve gone to school without it on and people asked if everything was alright. Everything is fine! I’m just forgetful. Before I had it resized I would take it off all the time, now I that I don’t take it off I don’t forget it.

I’ve forgotten it once when we went to dinner. I felt naked the whole time. And kinda like people were going to see the tan line and think something. Then I realized I’m a moron. :)

And yes, if I didn’t get a ride from Mr. Kiwi to work every day, I would go back!

I don’t usually wear my ring to work since I work in a bio lab (rubber gloves + rock jutting out the top of my finger? nope, not smart), but if it’s not on my hand when I’m not at work, it feels weird. I would totally turn around and go back home just to put it back on! Doesn’t make sense, I know. :-P

Hahaha, YAY! Glad I’m not the only one!!! :-D

And yes, the fake proposal was so cute! :-) I really hope someone thought that I ran up to the building, he proposed in pajamas, and I accepted and ran off again like that for real!!!

I never knew e-rings were so important until I got mine. I wear it in public, but normally I take it off at home. I have a fear that my parrot will see it when I’m petting him and try to take it off finger and all. But…I DO feel weird when I don’t wear it to the gym.

That happened to me once. I went to work early one day (about 20 blocks from home) and realized I didn’t have it on. It freaked me out since hubby hadn’t left for work yet I him to grab it and swing by my office on his way to work and of course he did.

haha i would have definitely gone back for the ring too!! my fiance and i leave for work together and we drive across the bridge and he drops me off at the subway…usually i’m yelling at him to hurry up since i have to be at work earlier than him and on one of the days i was especially mad he was taking forever…i forgot my ring and i went back upstairs to get it! :-D

he didn’t say anything though…even if we were right BEFORE the bridge i would have asked him to drive back for it…if we were already across it i wouldnt ask…

i totally understand! i actually am w/o my e-ring right now and have been feeling off… i had to drop it off this past weekend to be fitted with my newly bought wedding rings!!! yay! so my consolation for not being with it now is that when i get it tonight, i’ll have 2 more spaklies to add to the collection!

i always go back for my ring! no matter when and where i am when i realize it.

Brings back a funny memory. The very first weekend we were engaged, fiance was bummed that I’d forgotten my ring when I left the house, but when he realized the only reason I’d taken it off was so that it wouldn’t get scratched while I was scrubbing a pot with steel wool, he thought that was the sweetest.

I definitely would have gone back! I forgot to where mine when I ran out to the gas station one morning and felt weird. I couldn’t begin to imagine going a whole work day without it! But I sadly will have to give it up before the wedding; we are having it soldered to my wedding ring before the wedding day. But that way, I don’t have to give up both rings after the wedding. :)

This happened to me last week–I had to go back to get my ring :P
Luckily my job doesn’t really notice when I’m late, we don’t have a set schedule.

I am glad that I am not the only one. I left my ring at home once and was so worried about it and felt naked without it.

I’ve gone back for it 3 times and I’ve already been in my car and almost out of the apartment complex!

It just becomes a part of who you are. I’m the same way with the promise ring my bf gave me. I wear it everyday on my wedding finger and only take it off at night and when I shower. If I leave the house without it my day just doesn’t seem right.

i have actually forgotten my ring on several occasions. usually otw to work…. and…it’s about fifty fifty for me to go back. at first, i didn’t even notice until i was at work, and by then it was too late. but i’d go back during lunch to pick it up depending on how hectic work was. i miss it when i forget it because i like to stare at it while i type boring work stuff. lol.

I wear the promise ring Andrew gave me everyday, but I’ve never forgotten it. Couldn’t imagine not having it for an entire day! It’s so sparkly, I never forget it…hehe.

LOL! I take my ring off as soon as I come home from work, unfortunatly I forget to put it back on in the morning. Especially when I am in a rush, so yes I can sympathize. I normally go back for it. I’m too scared it might be lost or stolen. I rather have it on me plus I love my ring.

I once forgot to put on my engagement ring, but didn’t go back home to get it because I didn’t want to be late. At lunch, a co-worker noticed and asked if I had any problems with my fiancÆ’©!

So funny — just yesterday FI and I went to the Crate & Barell “engagement sunday” with FI’s best friend (best man) and his wife. So we go on the subway to go and I realized “my ring!” With house guests in our tiny apartment my rutine was all messed up and I left my engagement ring in the apartment. And of all days — going to a engagment registry session. It’s the first time since he proposed last April that I have forgotten.
