Marriage, Car Insurance, and the Law

January 30th, 2007 @ 8:25 am by Mrs. Peach

Alrighty folks. I am confused. So I’ve always heard that getting married will most likely lower your car insurance, but I was never sure why. I thought it was because the people who plug and chug your stats into a formula assume that if you’re married, you’re more responsible, less likely to drive crazy, and thus get into less accidents.

Sooooo if this is all true, I would want to let Geico know that I’m getting married in March, right? But then, I was thinking… is it considered “cheaper” because most people combine their policies and get a marriage discount of some sort. For example it’s cheaper once you get married combining policies than having two separate policies or is it cheaper period even if I wasn’t combining policies.

Why I ask is because Mr. Peach currently doesn’t own a car (he commutes into NYC via good ole public transportation), and therefore doesn’t have car insurance. So for me to let Geico know that I’m getting married, does that just raise my car insurance because we’ll now be living in the same household, and it adds an additional person to the insurance (even if he’ll rarely be driving the car)? And then there’s the law. Someone said it’s not about choice but that the law might require you to report a change in life (ie. getting married) to insurance policies within 30 days of the event.

Anyhow, I am not thoroughly confused. Is anyone else having insurance confusion because you’re getting married? What will you be doing about you and your future spouse’s insurance?

Ahhhhhh! I can’t afford for my insurance to get any higher. Darn Honda Civic and its easily stolen parts statistics! (Altho I do love my hybrid.) Darn NJ for its high auto insurance! (Hmmm, can’t say NJ has grown on me yet. haha. Sorry Jersians!)

Mine went down just for putting a second driver (my fiance) on the policy - I don’t know if marriage will make it go down again though!

It gets less expensive because they use a formula to figure out your insurance and they figure you are more responsible!

so stupid! but the discount is nice :)

Do you also have a renter’s policy through GEICO or its affiliates? That will also lower your premium. Your FH should be listed as a household member, but that shouldn’t raise the rates for one car. You can call the NY or NJ Department of Insurance to get consumer information on auto rates and what factors are allowed to be considered in setting rates in that state.

Actually, your first hunch was right. Part of the formula is statistical, and statistically, married people get into less accidents than single people (and females get into less accidents than males, under 25 year olds get into less accidents than over 25 year olds, etc)

I am an insurance agent and yes, just being married provides you an additional discount because the number crunchers/analysts says it shows greater stability, more responsibility.

But if Mr. Peach does not have a good driving record or is a newer driver with less years of driving experience, your premium could go up because of that. It just depends - an additional could raise the premium or it could help your premium. You especially see this in much older couples- 1 vehicle, 2 drivers, if one spouse gives up their driving license and it leaves one senior driver, their premium will go up. Analysts show that when there is shared driving responsibility in this situation, there is less chance of an accident.

The company I work for requires that ANYONE living in your household is listed on the policy as either an excluded or regular driver. These are people who regularly have access to your vehicle just by virtue of living under the same roof. Call Geico and speak to a customer service rep to find out how much it would be to add a 2nd driver to the policy with your fiance’s stats and also quote how much your premium will be with a married discount. They should be able to quote you a figure so you can be prepared. Oh, and be sure ask about professional discounts - I don’t recall what you and Mr. Peach do or studied in school but it could qualify you for extra discounts. Good luck!

When Mr. Orange and I moved in together, our rates did go up but we are on separate policies. Now that we are about to get married, we will be investigating whether me going on to his plan (since renters insurnce is already on) may be cheaper.

Anyway, thanks Miss Peach for reminding me of this!!

Thanks everyone! Special thanks to Darlene! (I was secretly hoping one of the readers would be an insurance agent! haha) Will you be able to hook me up with some awesome insurance?? *wink**wink* hahaha~ i’m jk. Although if anyone wants to promote a car insurance company they love, i’m all ears.

Well, Mr. Peach has an impeccable record (*knock on wood*) and has been driving longer than I have… SOOOOO i’m hoping this will be good news! ^_^ Mr. Peach is currently in school but I’m an engineer! But I think I already got a discount for that.

Lol what a weird coincidence…I *just* got off the phone with my agent, asking the same thing! He told me what Darlene said :-)

I’ve gotta brag, I *love* my insurance rates…it’s already really really low because I’m still on my parents’ plan (I know, I know. :-P But it’s so much cheaper than going on my own!) and after I get married, it’ll be even less than my cell phone bill. Just had to share, ’cause I’m one happy camper right now. ::happy dance happy dance::

hey miss peach, first of all i have to say that i am jersey girl at heart (now living in the dc/virginia area), and am sadden by your dislike of the beautiful (albeit sometimes smelly) garden state :) but, anyway, like everyone said, getting married did provide us with additional discounts which worked out super for me because i was 24 when i got married and knew that i would get a discount when i turned 25, so the discount from getting married was a nice surprise :)

ot–I’m in Kansas City.

My current discounts: my parents plan + being a full-time student + having a high GPA + driving a compact car + never making a claim.

After I get married, I’ll have all those same discounts except the parent one, obviously :-P

We have a close friend who passed away suddenly earlier this month. The wife notified her insurance company (?which one) today of his death, thinking it would lower her premium. NOT! It raised it $1400/yr because of “less yrs of driving experience in the home”. These “irresponsible” people are in their 40-50’s.

You know the truth is insurance companies thought in the past that married people were safer drivers. While that still holds true it seems to be fading when it comes to lower rates.

How about this…
I recently got married. I have a terrible driving record, and subsequently lost my license (5 years ago). I live 2 minutes away from work and I do not drive, ever.

My wife changed her name… Geiko Cancelled her policy. Stating that because we were married, and I have no license they could no longer ensure her. Wtf?!? Its not my car, it’s registered to her, and I have never driven it.

How can they do this? She has a stellar driving record, no tickets, no accidents, nothing.
