Computer vs. Significant Other

January 31st, 2007 @ 8:32 am by Mrs. Orange

From the NY Post, January 26, 2007:

Computers take up so much of our time that they threaten to close windows on our most important relationships, a new study says.

Sixty-five percent of people spend more time with a computer than with their spouse or significant other.

So, are you spending more time on a computer than with your significant other?

hmmmmm!! i can sorta see this happening… but more on Mr. Peach’s side. Since he does computer animation he’s in front of the computer a lot doing work. Other than that he plays games on the computer, like World of Warcraft! (evil game!!) Although he’s been good about not playing tooooo much these days and has agreed to stop playing for the first few months we’re married AND to always respect our time together more than computer time, of course. ^_^ muhaha, i got the power! haha, i’m jk. But yeah, Mr. Peach has gotten much better about it over the years.

I think we both are… Our jobs require us to spend pretty much all day in front of a computer. It’s also how we keep in touch with friends since we’ve moved out of state.

Umm…yes since I found weddingbee!! FI just takes it as his opportunity to play Madden.

My FI is a big computer nerd and over the several years we’ve been together, it has rubbed off on me. We’re the couple sitting in front of the TV with our laptops. So, yes, we do spend a significant amount of time on our computers, but we spend that time together, still interacting. We don’t just zone out on each other. :)

On weekdays, yes. We spend all day in front of computers at work/school and then more in the evening, checking email and dealing with wedding stuff. But we always spend time making and eating dinner together and watching our favorite shows.

I think that statement is pretty misleading. You could ask, “do you spend more time at work than with your partner?” or more time watching TV, or reading, etc. Some nights when we both have our own things going on, we’ll see each other for an hour, maybe less. That doesn’t say anything bad about our relationship, only that we have lots of interests and friends.

Since my job is at a computer…. yes. :(

But when we are both home from work, we are barely on the computer.

Wow…I guess that is correct. I sit in front of the computer all day long at work and when I get home I doing wedding research and design stuff on the computer at home. I guess I need to spend more time with my man.

I spend my entire day on the computer researching (for work of course) and then go home and blog/email/research for wedding and other stuff. Mr. Orange spends his time watching HBO then and has worked out ok.

oh hell yea! This is what I do with him, without him, and next to him (he has a computer that sits right next to mine). I feel bad by the end of the night - Mr Apple isn’t getting any attention. I will try to cut back though…..

Yes. I spend all day at work and then I take night classes where I’m in front of a computer. I haven’t seen my fiance in 3 days!

My fiance is a computer engineer, so he definitely spends more time with one of his (three!) computers than with me.

Oh my goodness, this is so true! My FI thinks that him being in bed with me while on a computer still counts as quality time!

hahah I’m on the computer a lot of times while my bf is watching tv and it takes away cuddling time so he hates it. when he starts complaining though, I quickly finish up what I’m doing and join him. I’m so bad, I know.

haha, we use the computer to spend time with each other. along with the phone, it has been key in our ldr.

though, since he also does web design, he stays up late working so that does cut into our evening conversations just a bit, but he’s working so i don’t complain.

Well, I don’t spend more time on the computer but I do spend time on it…and soem days (depending on his mood) FI will come home and feel a little dejected if I am tappity-tapping away. So I put it away for a couple hours!

I generally try to only go on if he’s watching something specific on TV, or on his own computer, still sleeping in the AM, etc. I want as much time with him as possible!

He gets to spend ALL DAY on his computer and I do not as a teacher, which is part of it. He has his own message board/blog site that he’s addicted to as well. :-)

I think it really only matters how much time you spend on the computer when you’re away from work. If you count your work hours here too, well, then of course you spend more time online than with your SO!

Anyway, I generally use the computer for about an hour in the evenings at home, and I only spend more time if there’s something urgent to get done OR if Chris is playing video games. Which is becoming alarmingly frequent, I don’t remember the last time I came home to a sound other than shooting guns. Anyone got any good tips for prying your man away from the Xbox 360??
