Just Wondering…

January 31st, 2007 @ 1:26 pm by Mrs. Plum

Is $10 a slice normal/average? Because that’s what we’re paying for our cake.

z731094

The cake I ordered for my fiance’s birthday was around $12 a slice.

z424329

But I went to look on other cake/bakery sites and they quote around $2.75 a slice?! That has to be for a plain, undecorated cake, right?

$10 a slice is really high. i think my cake is less than $4 a slice, probably close to $3.50. it was included in the venue’s price. i know you can pay thousands for a cake, but if you do, you should know that you’re paying super high end. $10 a slice is super high end.

It all depends on what you consider to be normal. With the all detailing involved, you can expect to pay $10 - $15 per slice from high-end vendors (such as the vendor you are going with).

Don’t second guess yourself,(and not saying that you are) it’s a beautiful cake!

$10 a slice is a lot of money, but that is what you pay when you go to the fancy bakeries. We are paying around $2.50 a slice for our cake. We went with a baker that works out of her home, so she has almost no overhead. She also gave us the cake platform/stand for free, etc. The only downside was that she didn’t have all the fancy flavors that some places have. However, we were able to find 4 combinations of cake and fillings from what she offered and had a hard time narrowing it down!

She showed us pictures of her previous client’s cakes and they were all fabulous. Some had heavy decoration, some were plain. We had been to a wedding where she was the baker and so we already knew the cake would taste great!

thats way to hight. I think an average cost per slice should be between 3-6 dollars. We paid 4.50 for ours~

For the type of cake you’re getting (fondant right?), it’s not high. It sounds about average, if not a bit lower. ;)

especially for a design that’s intricate like that.

that is really high, but it’s probably due to the fact that the cake artist has to put in a lot of labor…those are beautiful cakes, but i would never spend that much on a cake…just make sure it tastes as good as it looks!

My baker starts at $6/slice and has a $600 minimum…. so yours sounds like it might be on the low end. :)

That seems way too high. My cake was quite embellished and I had special flavors and fillings plus flowers…
I paid 3.75 a slice.

I think it may have to do with regional prices and the reputation of the baker/bakery. If it is what you want and you are willing to pay for it, I guess it isn’t a problem. I am quite sure that the decoration takes a ton of work.

Our’s is going to be $1.50 per slice/cupcake. Our baker is considering each cupcake be a slice.. and each one is $1.50. It is going to be miniture fondant cupcakes that replicate the real cake, that we will be cutting. She had great flavors and her cake are absolutely beautiful. she works on the side as well as in a bakery, so there was no overhead. and this sounds great to us considering we are having around 150 guests!

Totally rediculously high, IMHO, unless you are going for a lot of imbellishment with gumpaste flowers.

Hi everyone! No, i’m not second-guessing my choice - i LOVE my baker/cake designer and i LOVE the taste!

I was just curious to see what is “normal”?

This bakery actually was a lot less than some others I went to… another one quoted me $1850!! O.O

It all depends on the baker, the ingredients, the decoration. I just did the cake testing this past weekend and one baker was $2.50 flat, another is sending me a price and the third will be outrageous (but she’s also the best in my state and about to be published in people magazine). If it’s important to you spend the money - but shop around too.

$10 is perfectly reasonable. You get what you pay for and if you have the resources you might as well pay the price to get a great cake. We did many cake tastings and could tell the difference in price when we were there. We paid $13 per slice and it was the best decision. Our cake was beautiful and tasted great. The next family wedding the cake was $3 a slice and both the bride and groom mentioned later that they were disapointed after seeing ours a month earlier.

Our cake is $3.25/slice. To me, $10/slice sounds really high, but it depends on the area where you are and the baker.

In the city of Dallas, we have a wide range of bakers that charge anywhere from $2 - 5$ to $10 - $15, depending on the clientele that they cater to. Dallas Affaires is a very high end bakery (and does absolutely amazing work). With that said, $10 per slice is pretty average for them.

What a beautiful cake. I thought it sounded high until I read the rest of the comments. Ours cost about $300, but was pretty simple.

that sounds totally reasonable to me. in NY, i only saw one or two cake designs for under $10/slice. the rest were over and some topped out at over $20/slice.

I’m sure it depends on location, baker, etc. For one of the best wedding bakers in our area who has been around for ages, we paid about $4 a slice. But your cake is beautiful and I’m sure it will be worth it.

G, I am not using Dallas Affaires - the lady there was very rude to me and overcharged for what you were getting :-p

I am using Frosted Art Bakery & Studio and I highly recommend them! :)

I would say that’s average for a designer cake. Ours is $20 per slice.

Ours starts at $3.50 a slice base price, but with all the stuff we wanted added it works out to about $6 a slice. Their cakes are incredible, too. We had one at our engagement party and that sealed the deal for us.

I’m sure a $10 per slice cake tastes pretty divine though. I guess if the cost isn’t an issue for you, you should go for it.

And not to mention that is one beautiful, intricately-designed cake! Really reasonable for something like that.

My best friend works for a pastry chef in Huntington Beach and they start at $5/slice.

But I think your cake is gorgeous. So if you love, you should go for it.

That’s pretty high. My cake was fondant, fresh, and delicious but we only paid $3.50/pp. With 550 guests, I had to save where I could. You can see pics here: http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/2254241/8 I’ve also known people who had a fake cake with only 1 real layer and a huge sheetcake in the back. After the couple cuts the cake and takes that first slice, the restuarant wheels the cake to the back to be cut and then serve the sheetcake without anyone knowing. I would also suggest going to an Asian or Hispanic bakery for cheaper cakes. They just don’t charge as much.

oh my gosh! we got a deal - my cakes were 4.00 per person. We chose the flavors (mimosa and kahluah), frosted, and decorated with flowers and chocolate dipped berries for the grooms cake.

you know i didnt even think about price per slice until i read ur entry and i just calculated and mine is about 9.85 per slice so i think thats about right? or im just saying that to make myself feel better too. haha but my cake isnt as intricate as urs… so urs is a better deal :)

lol - I think you’re right - I know I got a really great deal :) I finally went with this bakery after testing 4 others that didn’t taste good and were ridiculously more expensive :)

Tina- your cake is really cute! :) We’re not big fans of the asian-tasting bakery cake… heheh but we ARE having one of those for our larger asian reception later on :) with 400 guests, I gotta go cheap somewhere!

EEK… $10-12 seems really high for a slice of cake. The highest I’ve seen is $7… but I admit, I haven’t looked much.

Miss Plum,
My cake vendor was actually a Vietnamese family who used to live and study in France so I got the price of an Asian bakery with the taste of a French bakery! hehe If I had time, I’d do a blog for the budget bride since I made most of stuff for our wedding. :)

I think it’s fairly high, but I think a lot of the prices are. I disagree that it’s always ‘you get what you pay for’…. a lot of what you’re paying for is the name & reputation, vs. the actual prices of what’s going into the ingredients. I suppose it’s the same if you’re interested in a certain label on a dress, but that doesn’t mean that a cake that’s $4/slice really tastes that much worse. It just might not be as decorative.

Then again, it’s *cake*. I’ve had really great cake in my life, but won’t remember it days or years later. It’s a cake. Everyone has their priorities with what they want, though, so that’s just my .02.

I think the price is reasonable for the cake you’re going for. I paid 5$ per slice and the cake ( see link below) was bigger than expected (My DH and I were fine with it :)) but it didn’t have the beautiful details of your cake

In NYC, $8-12 per slice is a standard for a decorated (but not too ornate) cake from one of the top shops. I would imagine that prices in texas would be much lower, but you are going with a celebrity baker, so that makes up the difference.

We were able to lower the price of our cake somewhat by having a 3-tier cake for 100 people and a 50-person sheet cake (that wasn’t decorated). Of course, we wound up only having around 110 people (hey, where did all of my extra cake go!). The who she-bang was $1250 or around $8.50 per slice.

Best,
Kelly (”Mrs. Firefly”)

don’t forget…. there might also be an additional cake cutting fee at your reception. usually that’s another $2.50 a slice just too cut + serve your cake!

If I am not mistaken I seem to remeber you saying this was the lady that was on the Food Network. Seems to me that alone would put her cake prices a little above many of the other bakers.
Plus I would imagine it depends on where you live as to prices.
That cake is very stunning and I can imagine it would take a lot of work to do.
We are are getting our cake for around $2 a slice!

I am using a couple of the best bakers in Santa Barbara, CA. The wedding cake is $4.25 per slice. The groom’s cake is $8 per slice since it’s more intricate.

personally, i think it’s a bit high. but what do i know about wedding cake prices. our cake is included with the reception hall price. but, the cake is REALLY pretty and your baker is very well known. (i see her in those foodnetwork challenges all the time) so i guess, you’re in the right ballpark in terms of price.

Everyone else’s responses are great, but I’ll add my 2c:

For $2.75/slice, we’re getting a 4-tier cake, 2 flavors, 2 flavors of filling, buttercream icing with whatever decorations we want. But we’re in the midwest, and our bakery is “up and coming” (but they’re SO amazingly fantastic!) So with a really high-end bakery I can easily see a cake costing that much per slice, but I bet you can get the same thing for a much lower cost, nad still have it look AMAZING, if you’re not set on a particular bakery. If they’re the ones you want, though, I say go for it! It’s your money :-)

It’s high for me, but it’s such a fancy pretty thing that it’s pretty much what I would expect. Just more than I’d pay for something that everyone is going to eat… I just want it to taste good!

More than $1000 for something you’re going to eat in one day? It better be some freakin’ fantastic cake. I guess we all have the things we are willing to splurge on, and I guess sugar+flour+butter isn’t something I’d be willing to spend that much money on.

I agree with fizzyg. It’s just cake. There have been cakes before and will be cakes after. Yes, it’s pretty, but if you saw the cake sold in slices in a bakery, would you pay $10 for one slice? Would you purchase enough slices for everyone you are inviting to your wedding? (No offense, I love my FH to death, but I don’t think his second cousin on his stepmom’s side twice removed is worth a $10 slice of cake that will take less than 5 minutes to eat and then be gone forever).

I know a lot of people are saying if you have the money go for it, but I say be sensible and compromise - ask about buttercream icing since it’s usually cheaper than fondant (tastier too IMO), and then put the difference into savings. That way, you can have the same cake flavors and design (which is why you went with this baker) AND you can have a little extra to either put somewhere else in the wedding or put in savings to fund future houses, cars, college funds, etc. I know twenty years from now when I have kids and a mortgage I’d kick myself for spending that much on a cake.

But, like others said, I’m down here in DFW, and I know prices vary greatly all over the country. Cost of living adjustments and all that. :)

I think it depends where you live, I am in Fort Wayne Indiana and that would get you a cake made from gold here!! I paid about $2.00 per slice for my cake, so $10 per slice is higway robbery, but might not be if you are in say California.

I’m getting married in Des Moines IA and mine is about $4.00/slice. [We have a high-end baker for the area] $10/slice would be for a cake of gold there. But in your area, it may be more the norm. It really depends on the area that you are buying the cake.
