About Mrs. Emerald

Gosh dangit, I just realized that I don’t really know anyone musically inclined. Who can I ask to perform a piece during our ceremony? The only musically inclined person I know… is myself, and I don’t plan on singing myself a song, haha.

Since our DJ is going to provide the processional/recessional music for us, I’m not hiring any musicians to play for the ceremony. While this may sound a bit untraditional, or even “unclassy” (*gasp*), I have very specific and untraditional songs in mind that I love, and I only want the original versions played - not a string quartet or harp version.

So, therefore, what do I do? Just skip over a performance piece? Although I do plan on having a unity candle lighting ceremony, I’m having an original version of a song played for that portion as well.

What is everyone doing for their ceremony?

We didn’t have any performance music in our ceremony. The DJ did the processional, recessional and the sand ceremony. Neither of us is very muscially inclined and it just wasn’t that important to us.

We’re doing a reading instead. There are some really beautiful poems that are perfect for weddings .

I will make my dress for about $200 so we can have live music. Sell your dress and hire some muscians.

Nowhere is it writtne that you need a performance piece. If you really want one though, look into school music departments or local glee club/choirs. There are plenty of talented people that would probably not know how much to charge and would sing for cheap money! I know I would have in college! Just make sure to sign a contract with them and give them plenty of practice/rehearsal time and hear them before you sign the final papers!

We’re having a DJ too. If you’re not having a live quartet or whatever, the Philharmonic has made some awesome classical renditions of popular songs (Like U2 beautiful day, some coldplay, moby) Really awesome, definately a twist on what you normally hear. We might incorporate some of that for the ceremony…He just searched on Itunes to find it. Let me know if u need help finding the music, I can get it for you!

a friend of ours is singing for us during the wedding, and another friend who’s a juillard grad is rounding up some of her friends to make up a string quartet for us. the string quartet is a surprise for Fi’s mom and my mom, b/c they love classical music so much.

I have a super musically inclined fam, so I may not be of help. My cousin and my brother are acting as my ceremony musicians and one of my aunts will be singing during the unity candle ceremony. I’m debating whether or not to sing myself sometime as a surprise to FI. eeek. O_O

But I don’t think you absolutely need a performer. If you already know what you want and have everything set for your DJ, then just do it that way. There really is nothing that says you HAVE to have a live performer. Just do what you want to achieve the feeling that you want. And if your DJ has the songs you want, let them spin ‘em. :-)

For the processional and recessional, we are just using CDs. I have two guy friends that are both amazingly talented singers (one is even professionally trained in opera), so we will have them each sing a song, one before our reading and vows and one during the unity sand ceremony (we aren’t doing a candle). Both of the songs are Josh Groban, “When You Say You Love Me” for before the vows and “You Raise Me Up” for the unity. If these two men were not part of my life, we probably would not be having any live music at all, though. Nowhere does it say that you are required to have a performer. It’s your ceremony; do what you want!

I, too, am having a DJ for the prelude, processional and recessional parts of our ceremony. I want the prelude to be very specific, not-so-traditional songs, same goes for the processionals and recessionals. (And I can’t afford U2 to play my recessional!) During the ceremony, FI’s uncle and dad will be playing an acoustic version of “Times Like These” by Foo Fighters. Untraditional, I know…but I’m SO excited about it!
I don’t think having the DJ play music during your ceremony is unclassy AT ALL. There’s a reason those songs sing to you and having the originals played because you like them is a valid reason enough. It’s your ceremony, Own it!!

I’m doing the exact same thing as you for the same reasons. But I’m also planning on hiring a cellist from a local church to perform some songs (maybe old hymns) during the prelude (when guests are gathering and chatting). It seems like a neat and affordable way to include that live music element.

I went to a wedding a long long time ago and during the rehearsal I guess they used a CD just to practice instead of having the musician. The song was “Only Time” by Enya and it just happened that the song ended exactly when the mock processional did. The next day came and I don’t know if there was a problem with the musician or if they canceled them, but sure enough they used the Enya song. I heard this song again yesterday and it got me thinking…

I know some people in the music program at the University of Houston, but if I can’t get one of them for cheap, I’m just going to make a CD and have a friend cue it all. After all, our semi-religious ceremony won’t last more than half an hour, so there’s really no need to hire someone to play a handful of songs.

I think you can just nix the performance.

We’re having some members of our reception band perform at the ceremony. We’re getting on a ranch, so we’re doing very southern, romantic fiddle sounding stuff - selections by Jay Ungar that have been in movies like the Civil War and Legends of the Fall. Really gorgeous music, perfect for the setting.

you’re in chicago right? well, i’m a musician at elmhurst college and there are students here that are always looking to play untraditional music in a preformance. most do it at a low price as well. i’ve played clarinet solos and in ensembles for about $50 for two or three songs at wedding ceremonies. I also know a ton of other college students that would do it as well for dirt cheap.
