Daddy And Me

February 1st, 2007 @ 5:03 pm by Mrs. Lily

We’re definitely doing a father-daughter dance… if I could ever come up with a song! I really don’t want anything overly sentimental and gushy, but my Mom nixed my first choice, which was All You Need Is Love (The Beattles). She said it was too hard to dance to. Argh. My mind is a blank.

Do you guys have suggestions for songs that are sweet, but not so sweet that I yak?

weddingmusiccentral.com has a couple of really nice, not too sentimental, songs written especially for the Father Daughter dance. One is called “Your My Hero” (from a daughter to her father) and the other is called “My Little Girl” (from a father to his daughter). You can listen to sound clips of both songs on their website. I’m planning on using the first one for my wedding.
Congratulations and Good Luck!

we did “what a wonderful world”. it was a short & sweet all-is-right-in-the-world song. :)

Miss Lily, from my tons of father/daughter song posts, I am stumped, too. But I think I might use “You and Me” by Lifehouse. He loves that song.

Sunrise Sunset has a waltz rhythm and is a great wedding song. What is wrong with sentimental?

My dad loves Paul Anka so I chose “Times of Your Life”.

I am using Tim McGraw’s new song, “My Little Girl.” It literally brings me to tears every time I hear it, so it may be too sappy for you. But it’s worth a listen. :)

I really want to use “Desperado” by either the Eagles or Clint Black. “I loved her first” is beautiful, so is “Tough Little Boys” by Gary Allen. Both are country.
I think “Butterfly Kisses” is pretty, but overused IMO.
Please let us know your contenders! Good Luck!

We’re dancing to “Father and Daughter” by Paul Simon. It’s really cute, not gushy and don’t have to worry about it being wierdly inappropriate. I think the lyrics are so fun! (And it’s from the Wild Thornberry’s movie!)

My three finalists are

Bob Carlisle - Butterfly Kisses - overdone but we danced to it every year at my drill team banquet, so it’s meaningful to us. (For those who like the song, I think Colin Raye does a version, too, that’s a little more country)

Heartland - I Loved Her First

Tim McGraw - My Little Girl

I like them all equally, so what I think I’m going to do is get a copy of the words and play each song for my dad and then let him pick. After all, his first daughter is getting married, it’s a special day for him, too!

I had a friend that used “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys and it was great. We are combining our father/daughter and mother/son dances and using “Kind and Generous” by Natalie Merchant.

My dad was really afraid I would pick a song that would make him cry. So I thought about all the songs that had meaning to us, songs we would sing, or songs from movies we loved together. And silly as it may sound, I picked “Dancing Queen” by ABBA. We both have a secret love for ABBA, and on different special father-daughter times, he took me to Mama Mia and Muriel’s Wedding. And even though it’s a fun song, it means something special to us.

In My Life by The Beatles, that is what I used and it was lovely. I would advise staying away from the cheesy, overused stuff-it comes across as so tacky!
I love the Van Morrison suggestions as well as Paul Simon’s Father and Daughter.

I’m afraid we’ll both cry, so I picked an upbeat song - Ray Charles, “Hallelujah, I Love Her So.” I also considered “On the Sunny Side of the Street,” because he likes that song, but the Ray Charles lyrics were more appropriate for us.

I can’t believe no one has suggested “My Girl” yet! Upbeat, easy to dance to, sweet but will not make you yak.

I want to use “Candle In the Window” by Creedence Clearwater Revival. I’ve never heard of anyone using it before - I don’t even think it’s that well known. But my dad literally puts a candle in the window for me everytime i come home to visit - he started the tradition when I left for college. So it’s perfect :)

I leaning towards Moon River, the Audrey Hepburn version from Breakfast at Tiffanys. I love the tune, its so mellow, sentimental, not to mention short and sweet. But then I was listening to it the other day, and she sings it SO SLOW. We’d be barely moving… maybe I can have the DJ speed it up a bit, but I dont want Audrey sounding like a chipmunk, haha.

Miss Mouse (if I could be so bold)

Hi all!
I am so glad to hear that other people are using Father and Daughter! I love that song but was worried that because the lyrics are for a little girl it would be weird. I have not decided yet on our song, I am trying out many of the ones already mentioned but one that I like that hasn’t been mentioned is Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel) by Billy Joel.
Also, I wanted to ask, are all of you telling your Dad’s of your choice beforehand or will you surprise him? I too am worried that it might be too emotionsl to do the surprise… and I am also worried about the dancing since I am not so good - I think we might need to practice a couple of times before the wedding. What are your thoughts on this?
Thanks!

Unforgettable, Nat & Natalie King Cole. She sang it as a duet with a recording of her father in his memory.
