Tattoo Coverup?

February 1st, 2007 @ 2:07 pm by Mrs. Apple

Miss Orange had her first fitting last week - she looked beautiful in her dress and so very happy! I noticed she had a few comments asking about her tattoo. Will she cover up or leave it be?

I too have a tattoo, but on my lower back. It really wasn’t an issue for me since it’ll be covered up completely. It also won’t be an issue for Miss Orange either, who won’t be covering her visible tattoo up (it’s a part of who she is). But I’ve read about brides who are having a difficult time. These brides love their body art, but are having traditional and formal weddings so they feel it isn’t appropriate for their tattoos to show.

Some wedding experts say there are definitely ways to covertly cover your tattoo by either purchasing a wedding gown that has thick straps or a full back wedding gown. Others suggest using makeup concealers. One of the most popular ones out in the market is Dermablend, a full coverage concealer that comes in many different formulas and is waterproof (good for sweat prone brides) or Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage.

I read these work great, but make sure to do trial tests before the big day just like your makeup and hair trials. You want to make sure the color of the concealer matches your skin color on a bright and sunny day. :)

Will you or have you had issues with tattoos for you or anyone in your bridal party?

I don’t have a tattoo, but I do have a birth mark on my back, which, unfortunately looks like a round dirty spot. It’s not actually that noticeable (about 4 inches in diameter and very light), but I’m afraid it’ll show up in the “bride from the back” photo that I know I will want my photographer to take. I’ve thought about using concealer but my concern is that the concealer will rub off onto the dress and discolor it as there is some overlap. Does anyone have any suggestions or tried and true methods?

I’ve actually heard the tattoo cover up makeup doesn’t look good at all. I’ve read posts from some brides on other boards that even with the most expensive product and lots of practice, the spot looks really blotchy and bruise-like.

we used dermablend on a bridesmaid’s tatoo and it worked like a charm!

I have a tattoo of a big beautiful butterfly on my left shoulder blade.. while i think it’s part of me and very nice to look at, I doubt my traditional old-fashioned, korean family will think the same. My mom would have a heart attack if she ever found out I had one!

I’m actually considering dermablend..I think that’s the best way to go. I’m going to do trials of course, and I am still nervous about it possibly not lasting the entire wedding day.. or having someone smudge it by hugging me to tight etc. I would LOVE to have a strapless so i’m going to do lots of trials before then.

It’s actually stressing me out a bit..but I figure if i can cover it up decently and wear a veil.. it won’t draw too much attention to my back anyways right?

Miss BOP–how did you figure out what color would match your BM’s skintone? There’s soo many to choose from on the website!!

I have a butterfly tattoo on my left shoulder blade, as well. While I LOVE LOVE LOVE all my tattoos (I have 3, but this is the only visible one), I don’t want it showing up in the pictures. I actually have heard from several people that Dermablend does not stay on, as it claims to, and it’s fairly expensive. I am going to try Covermark tattoo kit (www.covermarkusa.com) because I have heard much better things about it and it has a more appealing price: $30 for the whole kit.

I don’t know about tattoos, but I use Dermablend to cover some scars from an accident, and it works wonderfully. These scars are on my face, so it’s super important to me to cover them well.

I have a lower back tattoo and very low back dress. It shouldn’t be a problem because the dress covers it, but I am worried about when I move around and what not. I think I might use body/fashion 2-sided tape to make sure that part of the dress stays put over the tattoo.

if you are ok with showing off your tattoo on your wedding day but just aren’t sure you want a really great wedding photo ruined by it.. why not talk to your photographer about digitally removing them from some key photos? there are so many other “enhancements” that photograhers can do these days.. removing a tattoo is a lot easier than making your hubby’s double chin dissappear or adding open eyes to the one person in the group that closed their eyes! :)

I was a bridesmaid in one of my childhood friend’s weddings a couple of years ago and, at the time, had 2 tattoos that were visible in the dress that she chose for us to wear.

She asked me to cover them both up with make-up because she had quite a few older people attending her wedding that she was afraid might be offended (and I think she just didn’t want any tattoos in her pics, lol). I did with make-up (not dermablend, just regular) and it just made my skin look dirty. I’m extrememly fair skinned & both of the tattoos are black writing, so it didn’t do so well.

I think that unless a tattoo is vulgar or blatantly offensive (nudity, swear words, etc), the person should be allowed to show it. If you invited the person to be in your wedding or just to attend it, you invited them because of who they are & what they mean to you- a tattoo (or multiple ones) are part of the person, so why not let them be seen?

I know that my wedding dress will show off a few of mine. :)

But that’s just my two cents.

Like Go Amie says, she uses Dermablend to cover scars. Unfortunately Dermablend was not formulated to cover colorful tattoos. There are a lot of great products on the market, but I prefer Tattoo Camo.

I want my tattoo covered up as well. I only have an outline of Taz (it is not colored in), and when I went to try Dermablend, it didn’t cover the outline at all. I am looking into trying Covermark.

I think if i’m paying for my wedding & making everything perfect then i should get to tell my bridesmaids if they should show the tat or cover it up.
i love all of them dearly & tats don’t bother me i just don’t have any at all & since i’m having such a traditional wedding i don’t want them showing.

It’s not a big deal & my bridesmaids understand completely.

now just which one have you guys had the best luck with cause i’m buying all the cover up kits for the 3 girls that have very visible tats…..

I’m planning on covering up my tattoo. Everyone in the family knows about it, and I’m not ashamed of it, but I’m planning on having a formal wedding, and it just clashes with my dress. I have super pale skin with this super pink undertone, so I have a lot of trouble finding even regular make up that doesn’t look clown-ish. I plan on buy three or four different brands of tattoo cover up to try out. I know that it’s a lot of money, but I figure that I only get once chance to walk down that aisle and one shot at the photos, so I want to be sure that I’ve got the one that works best for me. From what I can tell, most of the brands of tattoo cover up are basically the same thing, stage make up, which is fine, you just have to find the one with the best match for your own skin tone

I completely agree that a bride should be able to ask a bridesmaid to cover a tattoo. I love my best friend and want her to be my maid of honor, but if she cant cover her tats, I might have to pick one of my sisters instead. She has two large black tattoos, one on each upper arm, and they are VERY noticeable. They are tasteful, but I still don’t want them in my pictures, or even up there next to me. Shes the only one with them and I don’t want everyone’s eyes glued to her arms on my special day. Maybe that makes me a bridezilla, but I think I’m completely justified.
She understands and is willing to cover them, we just have to find something that works…
