Beauty Fades… Dumb is Forever

February 2nd, 2007 @ 2:53 pm by Mrs. Pearl

Well, that’s what Judge Judy says, but still…every bride wants to look beautiful on her wedding day. I’ve previously blogged about my hair and makeup artist from Wedding, Take 1, and I am in the process of now trying to recoup my money (we go to court later in February).

With the help of a fabulous friend, I decided to book Sherry McAnelly from On Location Beauty. She is a fabulously talented hair and makeup artist, so I know I’ll be in good hands with her.

Since our wedding is art deco/vintage inspired, I’ve been trying to find hair styles that will fit. Unfortunately, whenever I see “vintage” hair pictures, it’s just hair down in waves. As I am 1) getting married in the dead smack heat of summer, 2) have hair prone to frizziness, and 3) tend to sweat around my face, that is not a good option.

So far, I’ve been going off the following pictures for inspiration:

Which of these hairstyles do you like best?

From the pictures #2 (think if that last picture is you it’s #2 in your pic as well). I love the mounds of curls! It reminds me of the victorian age mixed with a sexy spanish look!

I like the last ones but is that one hairstyle or three? I will have to save those when I do my trials. I like lots!

I like either of the last 3 styles. But I think you should do a trial and show us. =) If your hair texture is different, it might come out looking really different.

Miss Pearl… Do you have a website for Shelly? I live in OC and also looking for someone to do my hair and make-up. Thanks!

I used number 2 when I went to the stylist last week for my trial. But sadly, I didn’t really have enough hair for it (I knew that it would likely be the case).

Instead I am going for something similar to the third on but instead of a huge flower I am going to wear a gardenia.

Good luck!

L: true about the hair texture. Unfortunately, no hair trial unless I 1) do it now, or 2) do it in June. My artist is having a baby soon, so she’s taking some time off.

KEG: My hair is fairly long, if that’s what I need for that look. It goes down to about mid-back right now. I was able to pull off the style shown in a previous post (http://www.weddingbee.com/2006/12/01/need-hair-and-makeup-artist-will-travel/), so I’m curious to see if I could pull off the fluffy, curly look in that second pic.

Jennifer, Sherry’s website is http://www.onlocationbeauty.com. She’s absolutely fabulous and talented in working with women of all races/ethnicities.

that’s me in the last set of pictures! if you like the do you should contact design visage in newport beach and book your trial with nicole thompson! those pics you have were taken at my trial with her a week or two ago. they come on location too!

$150 for the trial. $400 hair + makeup for the bride (the $150 goes towards the cost! so it’s more like $250 for the day of). your hair and makeup counts as 2 services and they ask for a minimum of 4 services the day of. so if your BM’s or moms get something done that should be fine.

i’m wearing a veil for the ceremony and am still undecided on whether to wear the flower the entire time or to swap it with my veil for the reception.

I haven’t decided for sure if I’m going to do a flower in my hair or an antique art deco brooch (which I already own, shown in the pics of my first hair trial linked above)

I can’t see spending sooooo much on hair and makeup — it’s washed off in 12 hours. Talk about money down the drain — literally. Especially makeup. I mean, who knows your face better than you do? You’ve had 10+ years putting on your own makeup daily.

What can actually change the way one’s face looks? Eyebrow grooming, glasses/contacts, weight gain/loss, plastic surgery (!), and skin care.

I think the REAL secret is to faithfully invest time and effort in excellent skin care (includes nutrition, sleep, exercise, thorough cleansing, not picking, maybe some decent (even drugstore) moisturizers or wrinkle-fighters) laser hair removal (done way in advance) in some cases.

Then just kick your makeup up a notch above “the usual” for W-Day. Spend money on buying some great quality makeup or brushes so you can DIY (there are a million websites with great tips) or have a talented buddy/sister who always looks good in those prom/wedding photos give you a once-over. You probably won’t have much makeup on for 99% of the honeymoon anyway, and there will be a million pictures of that time, too.

Hair, I understand it’s hard to reach and see the back of your head. Still, there is no hairdo worth $100+ for one day (exception for my African-American friends who can keep the style for a month-plus). Instead, invest in something to enjoy longer — great care, color, cut — to enjoy all the honeymoon and beyond. Someone you know can do hair. This is not rocket science. I will never understand why JLo needs to fly someone to L.A. just to tweeze her eyebrows. This is Marie Antoinette territory. How hard is it to pull the ugly ones or find someone in your zip code with a clue on which ones are the ugly ones?

Conclusion to my venting — A friend’s wife was seriously over made-up on their wedding day, and the photos look… well, very Asian pageant. What’s funny is that when we met her in person, we did not recognize her. Not good.

Hey, Iris.

(1) How do you Miss Pearl has “had 10+ years putting on [her] own makeup daily”? How do you know she wears makeup at all?

(2) How do you know that Miss Pearl can’t “keep the style for a month-plus”?

I hardly ever wear makeup. Or do my hair. Had I not hired a professional (the same artist that Miss Pearl is hiring, no less) the day of my wedding, it would’ve been disastrous. I can personally vouch for the quality of Miss Pearl’s artist. Definitely NOT pageant makeup.

Don’t make assumptions.

Iris:

Yes, skincare and plastic surgery can change the look of your face, but so can makeup!

Have you seen the before + after gallery of http://www.jessicamakeup.com?

And priorities are different for each person. You may not be able to fathom paying hundred of dollars for a pro to do your hair + makeup the day of your wedding, but for others, it’s an easy decision to make. With everything going on the day of, the last thing I would want is to have to deal with my own hair/makeup! I’d rather have a pro take care of it.

And your friend’s wife might have wanted the Asian pageant makeup look. Or maybe she didn’t do a trial run. Or maybe hired the wrong person.

Not everyone who hires a pro will look like that.

i had a terrible experience with DESIGN VISAGE: they were late with my makeup (so my ceremony was late and the time for pictures was shortened), got MAKEUP ON MY VEIL (foundation, which did NOT come out), did a poor job (two of my bridesmaids’ updo’s fell out before half the day was over), and were unprofessional and inconsistent - karen, the owner, promised me “3 girls” if i had 12 services. however when i booked 12 services, she said “we can get it all done with 2 girls”. i had my wedding planners call to fight for me, at which time she conceded and sent 3 girls. i had also been promised a different girl for me for bridal hair and makeup, only to find out 2 weeks before that i was never “guarenteed” and someone else who requested her got her. design visage was the one vendor that caused me the MOST havoc and stress on my wedding day. i do not recommend them to ANYBODY.
