Valentine’s Day

February 2nd, 2007 @ 3:43 pm by Reader Buzz

Mr. Bee and I don’t give each other Valentine’s Day gifts, but we usually celebrate by going out or making a special dinner. I’ve actually found a gift that I want this year though - this adorable t-shirt! (It’s a reference to a classic Simpsons episode.)

Valentine’s Day is just a fun, silly holiday for us. But I know a lot of people hate Valentine’s Day for the commercial holiday that it’s become. Love it, hate it, don’t care about it - how do you and your SO feel about Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day is overrated - Sweetest Day is where it’s at (we’re getting married on Sweetest Day)!

(I’m joking - I didn’t know it even existed, but thanks to the wonder that is wikipedia, I do now: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweetest_Day)

I’m not one to shrug off a holiday that’ll get me flowers. I don’t really want anything else. I just love fresh flowers. So he does that, and I usually make him a full meal. Simple and sweet. Like us. :D

I’m getting that same shirt for my FI for Valentine’s! We aren’t big fans so I usually just get him cookies or something funny. I’m giving him that shirt and a mug with a political joke on it.

Just an excuse for a great date for us. We’ve never actually celebrate on Feb. 14th though because we’re always working.

our first date was actually on v-day so it’s a big deal to us in that way.

Mr. Orange and I met two days before V-day two years ago. He couldn’t call me back until 3 days later since (1) He shouldn’t call back the next day (2) Calling on V-day was just too lame. We don’t celebrate but I will cook up a mean romantic dinner — thinking baby lamb chops, potato gratin, etc.

We use it as an excuse to replenish the supply of chocolate in the house. That’s about it.

My bf and I are pretty mellow about it too. Last year was our first year celebrating it and I got him a bunch of little stuff I thought he’d like. He didn’t get me anything b/c I said I didn’t want anything. And we decided to cook dinner together b/c I think spending quality time working on something together is much more meaningful. We’ve gotten into trying new restaurants lately so this year I might take him to one I found. And I want to get him the Dwight bobblehead from The Office. =P

We agree to not get each other gifts, especially because Feb 4th is my birthday so it’s a bit of a hit to my poor guy’s wallet to have to do two gifts back-to-back like that. The last two years we’ve gone out to dinner, but this year we are kinda broke since we’re saving for the wedding and Chris is paying off the engagement ring. Neither of us like the commercialism of it, but we do like the excuse to spend romantic time together, so we’ll probably have a date night at home - turn off our phones, rent a movie. light a fire and order in.

the bf and i are casual about it too. we celebrated our first valentine’s day a month before we started dating, he made me a card and i wrote him a poem. ahh, young love. lol.

since it’s exactly a month before our anniversary, we celebrate it more like a monthly than anything else. so it’s still goofy gifts for us. good times.

though he’s trying to get me to at least acknowledge sweetest day. he’s a midwestern boy who’s grown up with it…i’m a cali girl who knew NOTHING of it until i went to school in the midwest…eight years later [and 2 with him] and i STILL have no idea what day it falls on.

My FI and are so not about Valentine’s Day! We might be sure to be together, but we don’t cut throats to get dinner reservations or get the perfect gift.

I might get flowers, and this year I’ve considered sending him something at work. See, I’ve realized I speak the “language” of Physical Touch and Affirmations, while FI is all about Receiving Gifts and Acts of Service. ;-) So I want to find him a little gift.

But still, it’s a super low key day for us that we kind of detest, and therefore protest. ;-)

Valentine’s Day is a great excuse to just be together (alone) and remember what’s really important in the relationship (love, romance) and have some time set aside for FUN (remember… before the engagement… when every moment was NOT spent on the wedding…?)

Fine by us to skip the commercialized not-so-good chocolates and picked-over/inflated flowers… a basic Hershey bar and my DIY massage treatment go a long way in his book. Although, I admit we do exchange mushy cards or notes. ; )
