Working On my Fitness

February 2nd, 2007 @ 9:29 am by Mrs. Hibiscus

January was a great month for me. After fighting it for 8 years, I have finally embraced the gym. It’s amazing. Before, I would shudder at the thought of going. While I was there I would do a half-ass job, doing 30 minutes on the elliptical and rushing home to eat a big dinner.

What changed you might be asking? Well, my friends and I started a little competition on January 2nd. Who could lose the most weight? (calculated by body percentage and not actual pounds) I was already planning to cut some calories and eat more veggies and fruits, but this got my butt to get a gym membership as well.

Now, there’s a guy at the clinic where we all work at that gives us fitness advice, and he told us to do weights in addition to our cardio. I hate weights. I hate being by all the stinky men and I hate trying to learn to use all the strange torture devices they call fitness equipment. But, I went with my friend and we learned them all together. I did notice there are a lot more girls doing weights than I remembered.

I love weights now! haha I can’t wait to work out my back, my abs, my legs and my arms. It’s fun when you know what you’re doing. There’s nothing worse than walking up to a machine, searching around for knobs like a blind man, trying to decipher the crytic pictures they call instructions, checking to make sure no one is looking at you, and then walking away because you can’t figure out what to do. (You know you’ve been there too….don’t lie) I feel like an expert now, adjusting the chairs with ease and people have actually asked me how to adjust seats and use machines. I would have laughed if you told me this a month ago.

I also do cardio after 30 minutes of weights. I either take a class, run, do the treadclimber or step machine for 30 minutes then do 20-25 minutes more on the ellipitcal. I do this about 4 times a week. I get so disappointed when I can’t make it to the gym. Again, I would have laughed if you told me this a month ago. I can’t believe my whole mindset has changed after only a month.

We weighed in this morning and I won the competition. I lost 5.6 pounds which is a lot considering my starting weight. Oh my prize is great. We all commute to Los Angeles from Orange County together. If you’re not from southern California, you can’t begin to understand the torture. Even with carpool, it takes forever. I win a week of not driving and it’s our last week on this rotation, so I never have to drive here again in the horrible traffic that is southern Cali. Woohoo!

I feel kinda bad for winning because I won so much more than just not driving. I lost weight, have a whole new attidude about fitness and I feel great! I have 5 more months until my wedding and I actually feel like I can acomplish my goals. It feels good. I actually only have 5 more pounds to go but I do want to tone up in the process.

What are you doing to reach your finess goals? Try going with a friend. It has been the secret to my success.

Oh and just for fun an interesting article on which helps you lose weight more: diet or exercise?

Congrats! It’s awesome that you have this new found love for exercising! Good luck with the next 5 months, I know you’ll look great and feel great!

FI and I signed up for a few personal training sessions and I think it’s going to make a big difference. We were going to the gym regularly before but definitely not pushing ourselves enough. Our trainer gives us a challenging circuit training routine that works every part of our bodies, it’s awesome.

And I’m totally with you on sometimes having been baffled by a machine and walking away in embarassment!

GOOD FOR YOU!! getting to the gym is not a problem for me. it’s the actual eating less part that’s torture. i’m a total foodie, so, dieting is not part of my vocabulary.

That’s great to hear…good luck with the weight loss! I’ve been working out as well and I feel like I have so much more energy and I don’t get sleepy at 2:30 anymore, it’s great. I I currently do 25 mins of cardio and about an hour of weights. I have dropped about 20 lbs so far. Hang in there, enjoy your workout!

Like you I struggled going to the gym and finally after a few years, I join the gym last month. I only go twice a week so I didn’t see any difference in weight but I feel better physically. I’m glad you have a healthy mindset for fitness, I still don’t look forward to the gym, it’s a matter of discipline for me. That competition sounds like a great idea, too bad all my gfs are skinny. Have fun sleeping in the car =) And keep us posted, we need more motivation posts!

WOW!! What an inspiring post! I’m pretty good about going to the gym somewhat regularly, but thanks for reminding me to push myself some more… congrats!! 5.6 lbs in 1 month is awesome.

congrats and high fives all around! competition is a great movtivator and definitely going with friends. and weights with cardio is awesome. i lost a lot of weight my senior year doing circuits like that. LOVED it.

i’m motivated by not wasting money. hahaha, so i try to pay for a set of classes because then i’d definitely go. i started doing yoga and actually stopped drinking soda [even though it was only maybe half a can a day] and i already lost 10 pounds. kick ass. lol.

Haha….hilarious, your description of not knowing how to use a machine is exactly why I don’t do weights. I only work on abs and triceps, that’s it. And then I run all the time. I really need to learn how to use weights…*sigh*

Miss Hibiscus,
I read your post this morning, and for the first time in 2007, I went to the gym. You are totally responsible for me taking my first step to get in shape for my wedding. For this, I want to thank you. But my sore arms hate you ;-). (I don’t usually do weights) And now I will have my 2nd 8oz serving of H2O. Cheers!

Miss Hibiscus says:

Katy!!! Congrats! :) Keep it up and try to have a workout buddy! Let me know about your progress.

I am totally with you on the excersiequipmentophobia… i never know what I am doing if I’m not on the treadmill or elliptical (which I don’t really know how to work either) I’m now planning to use my free training session with a physical trainer tomorrow… thanks!
