Idea Thief!

February 5th, 2007 @ 3:27 pm by Mrs. Strawberry

Everyone and their mom has done the paper lantern thing. And now, I am too. I have no shame. I’m stealing ideas left and right, not caring how overdone they are! :) I am convinced however, that the average wedding guest isn’t inundated with wedding images and probably has never seen them used before. In that case, I will claim the idea as my own and let them gush at how brilliant I am. :)

I’m planning on doing clusters above the dance floor, similar to this.

I already ordered a bunch of pink ones. So my question to you is this: Should I go the monochromatic route of all pink? Different shades of pink? Pink and brown? Or pink, brown and white? I realize that paper lanterns have an asian feel to them, but do you think I can get away with using them in my shabby chic theme? I sure hope so!

I think it would look great! The colors are very Shabby Chic, so I wouldn’t worry to much about it. I’d say use all three colors or pink and white. But definately multiple colors- too much pink might lose the point of the lanterns and look like a pink blob.

What if you stamped designs onto the lanterns? I think that would make it seem less Asian and better suited toward your theme. And I think multi-colors would be better too. =D

The lanterns are super cute! One question I have is how do you put them up in a hotel room? I’m wondering if anyone had any suggestions on that…

I went to a shower where they used different shades, styles, and sizes of pink lanterns. Some of them had very thin delicate strands of clear beading wrapped around the lantern, which caught the light and lightly sparkled.
Besides ribbons hanging from the bottom, you could also have beads dangling from the bottom.
Also, if the electrical situation is a problem for making them lit up from the inside with light bulbs, use white glow sticks or use battery operated candles.

I would do mostly white and pink with a few brown ones thrown in for some contrast. I think it would look great! And you’re right, most of your guests will probably never have seen anything like this. :)

I tried to get my fiance to go for pink and brown for our wedding and he said pink and brown reminded him of a butt hole which is all I can think of now when I see those colors. I like pink and white or shades of pink. How do you light them and get them all up like that? Are these the cord free ones?

That picture is beautful.

you thief! Hahaha, just kidding I am one too. Actually, everyone is a thief - we all get ideas from someone but maybe with a little bit of tweaking.

I like pink and white. White is the universal wedding color, plus it will help break up the monotony. If they come in more than one shade of pink, maybe get that too.

I for one do not think of the same thing nancy does (how gross!) when it comes to pink and brown. Especially with the white, it makes me think of neopolitan ice cream. Much more appealing!

I think for shabby chic, i’d do different shades of pink.

And I’m a thief too. for my best friend’s wedding, we’re doing shades of blue lanterns. (I say “we” because I’m in charge of decor. :D)

I’d do different shades of pink with some white in there…if you’re anal retentive like me, i’d have it all match my flowers and table linens…by the way, where did you order them from, I’ve had this idea brewing in my head for a while now…

if you’re using all three colors, make sure to have more pink than brown and white, in order to make sure the brown and white doesn’t drown out the pink. or maybe have multiple pink shades, with the brown and white.

idea stealing is a-ok in my book ;)

I love the lanterns. Do you hang them from the ceiling. I have a very high domed ceiling at my reception site and I was wondering what I could do to get something up there to fill that void. Would balloons look too cheap?

The brown ones might “disappear” against the wood paneling or if the room is dark at night. I agree to use mostly pink/white with brown as accent only.

I was thinking the same thing as Iris. I think if you use brown ones, it will darken the room which is already quite dark and brown is already a prominent colour with the wood panelling. I am voting for pink and white - it will help lighten the room!

I got the pink ones online–the white and brown ones are from lunabazaar. :)

I wouldn’t do the brown, just shades of pink and white. I think the brown would stand out too much and be jarring.

And I’m stealing LOADS of ideas. Mostly from my good friend Martha. I have so many old MS Weddings–I even bought some old copies off eBay with articles that looked interesting. I even have a copy of her old 80s “Weddings” book–my sister bought it for her wedding seventeen years ago. Anyway, I prefer to think of it as being “inspired.”

Pencils…share pics of that!!! I would love to see 80’s Martha. Still classy? Or, puffy sleeves and bright colors? :-)

I think Nancy’s funny. Nothing to add, I really think it’ll look good regardless of pink/white/brown. But Nancy is fun-knee.

I have “stolen” this idea too! the least expensive site with the most colors that I have found is:
http://www.asianideas.com
They ship really quickly and the colors are great!

BTW, another great place to get paper lanterns is http://www.asianlanterns.com
I ordered pink and brown lanterns (no laughing, nancy) for my sister’s baby shower. The pink ones were darker than what I wanted. So they shipped the lighter pink to me right away because the shower was days away, and I shipped the darker ones back to them after I received the pink ones. They only charged me for shipping and were super nice and prompt to deal with.

if you only light half of them, you could go with just pink and that’d look great too!

I would do white and pink! How many are you thinking you’ll need for over the dance floor (I only ask because I’ve been trying to figure out the same thing for our reception - lol).
