Veil Tales

February 6th, 2007 @ 2:27 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

This past weekend I got two things - a veil I ordered from Ebay, and a veil from my cousin Karen. The veil has always been my favorite wedding thing, which is good because I’m putting more effort into it than I did the dress! My very first ebay purchase was this veil, and it turned out to be more of a pain in the butt than I had hoped and expected.

Although the seller (veilsbylana) is in California, it still took me eight days to get the veil. When I did get it, it was crammed into my mailbox- even though I was there. After wrestling it out of the mailbox, and unfolding it, I realized the comb that was supposed to be attached was broken completely in half.

When I emailed the seller, I got no response. I waited another day and emailed again. After yet another day, I finally gave up and left negative feedback. Of course, this was answered with two emails - one stating, “If you are not happy, please contact me first (!!!), and don’t just leave neg. feedback.” The other email was from ebay- a mutual withdrawal form. So I ignored that email and responded to her, saying I never wanted to leave the feedback, but I emailed her twice. So she agreed to give me a refund, and that was that. Of course, it’s not showing in my account yet, so my refund is floating around somewhere. I honestly don’t know what to do about that. Has anyone else ever had trouble with ebay purchases?

While those veil issues were troubling, something good came out of it - my cousin Karen’s veil. She told me a while ago that she had a veil I could use, and I was excited to see it! During a family get-together she brought the veil, and it was almost exactly how I had pictured the one I wanted. Hers had two ivory tiers with a scalloped edge, and a gold/ivory embroidered scroll at the hem. It’s lovely.

Luckily, it’s also even lovelier on! Trying it on when we got home, Mr. Kiwi said he likes this one even better than the ebay fiasco one. And putting the veil on, I had my first wedding moment. Even while wearing my dress, I didn’t feel bridal. Once I tried on the veil, I got so excited and said, “I’m getting married!”

So, while there were issues, I now have my veil. It also has a beautiful marriage already attached to it, and that’s something to be thankful for. I will post pictures tomorrow. :)

That’s so exciting! I’m borrowing my sister’s veil for the wedding. I love the “something borrowed”s. They are so intimate.

I understand about the eBay thing. My friend got us tickets for a concert on eBay- we sent the money and everything. And then suddenly the guy sold them to someone else after he confirmed with us. Online shopping, unless its from an official catalog website, is shady in my opinion. Too many bad things could happen.

Yay for happy wedding moments!

Sorry about that, if you paid through Paypal, you can open up and dispute- you’re covered. Also, if she refunded you through paypal, it does take 3-4 days to show up, shorter if you used a credit card, longer if you used your bank account. Unfortunately some sellers take long to answer emails, but if everything is settled, I would fill out the withdrawal form, 2 days isn’t that long.

Happy Veil

Ebay can always be a risk, but in my case it paid to take that risk because I had a WONDERFUL ebay experience on a veil, and I got great service and my dream veil materialized! I was a little scared to take the risk, but it paid off.

The designer (she would probably call herself a seamstress, but she did so much more than that) is in the New Orleans area and works out of her home. We did everything by phone and email, and she was excellent about keeping in touch and is a good writer on email — no miscommunication. She personally designed the mantilla veil, taking my measurements and gown style and train length into consideration. She located and purchased all the lace (sending me links and swatches of various options; she has contacts where she gets great variety at good prices and she passes savings on to you), gave me options of how long/wide to make it, handsewed (not glued) it together being very clever in graduating the wide heavy lace around the circumfrence, sent photos (veil on a manequin) to make sure I liked it, graciously and promptly made tweaks I perfectionisticly requested… She was wonderful and I am so impressed with the veil she created. It is heirloom quality. She presented it beautifully (tissue, ribbon, personal note) and shipped it very carefully (insured). The veil arrived meticulously clean, not smoky or anything. She even trimmed all the little threads, saved the tiny scraps of lace for my scrapbook and included an extra comb in case I wanted to use the smaller one instead.

Oh — and the price was fair. Just tell her what you are envisioning and let her give you a quote once you identify and locate all the elements going into the veil. You will not be disappointed.

When your veil is done, she posts photos of it on her online photoalbum portfolio and sends you the link. She shares links with other brides to peruse, and the veil is named after you! It really matters to her that you send her photos of you wearing it on your wedding day (but she can post pre-wedding photos). Links are custom and temporary, so sorry I can’t forward a link.

That’s really too bad about your Ebay experience. I buy stuff on Ebay all the time and have never had any problems … just always be sure to take a look at the seller’s feedback.

I actually purchased my own wedding veil on Ebay too! And it was perfect. :)

Good luck with everything!!!

Cheers,
Crissy
