Growing It Out

February 7th, 2007 @ 10:31 am by Mrs. Orange

When I first met Mr. Orange, I sported an easy-to-maintain short hairstyle. When we got engaged, I started thinking about the look I want for at the wedding, so I decided to grow out my hair to wear a chignon. It’s been more than a year since then and tomorrow, I will go to my final “pre-wedding haircut.” I go to Stacy Pitt of Styles on B; she is amazingly affordable (by NYC standards) and her chair is at her apartment in LES — As Mrs. Firefly commented, “she has a calming presence.”

I will be at the Weddingbee GTG after that appointment and you’ll see the result there ;)

So, are you growing out your hair for your wedding ? If so, do you plan to chop it off (”Newlywed Chop”) after the wedding?

Yup, I’m growing my hair out for the wedding, although I want to wear it down and wavy. I would chop it off after the wedding but we’ll be having an at home reception about a month afterwards and I’m not sure if I’ll try to re-create my whole wedding day look again or not.

Ahahaha, I totally plan to chop it off after the wedding! well, maybe after the honeymoon (which is 1.5 months later). Didn’t know there was such a thing as “Newlywed chop” but yeah, I’ve been growing my hair out for awhile. For some reason, when I have long hair, I want short. When I have short hair, I want long. When it’s curly, I want straight. When it’s straight, I want curly. you get my drift…

Miss Orange,
Did Sachiko do your original hair chignon? Or did she just do your makeup? I booked her for my wedding in 2008 because I LOOOOOVED the makeup job she had done on you and a few others. Just curious because I am also thinking about Stacy or Sissi Chan for my bridesmaids hair! =)

Miss Bluebear: Sachiko did do my original hair chignon :-) She’s doing both hair and makeup. But, depending on the number of people you need hair/makeup, you may want to consider hiring a 2nd person to do either.

Keeping hair long. It’s my trademark, plus fiance LOVES it. Though, I would like to work my way back into a “style;” recently I have been just going for health & length, reducing layers. I would gradually make it more layered, but still keep a long “look.”

If I did a newlywed chop, poor hubby would probably be concerned that it would be a sign that of depression with my new identify as his wife. :)

P.S. I tried Natural Instincts “Shine Happy” this weekend and love it! It’s a hair gloss that you apply just like hair color. Made my hair super smooth, and now it tends to stay smooth rather than get fuzzy and bent up throughout the day.

I am chopping after the wedding and giving it to Locks of Love. I don’t if that counts as the “Newlywed Chop” however since it will still be at least shoulder length and I wear it up for work everyday anyway…

i’ve had my hair long for awhile now, but i considered cutting it around the time we got engaged. i changed my mind as i knew i’d want an updo and have been keeping it long.

but your entry makes me reconsider short hair again…maybe i will do the newlywed chop! ;)

Hi Miss. Orange,

I was recommended to call Stacy Pitt recently. I haven’t yet, but I can’t wait to see your hair-do. And I am also growing my hair out to give myself options. I’m even growing out the bangs. A painful process.

I’m definitely growing my hair out (slowly) for the wedding, but at any moment when it’s in my face or particularly unruly, I pull up my post-wedding hairstyle ideas and sigh… My current plan is to chop it, but my fiance isn’t totally thrilled about it.. so I’m hoping to find the perfect style that is shorter (but not super short) so even he has no complaints!

I am growing out my hair and have also dyed my hair back to its original color to get rid of the highlights. I will probably cut it after the wedding. Stacy is doing my hair also, she is really great. If anyone wants to see pictures from my trial you can email me at aweinick at gmail dot com

I grew my hair out from a super short pixie cut to chin length before the wedding. I’m still growing it out, but I know as soon as warm weather hits I’ll be dying to cut it all off again. But hopefully by then it will be pony tail length and less hassle. Although my hair has been long most of my life, I met my husband after I chopped my mid-back length hair off, so this is for him.

I usually keep my hair just past my shoulders, and have been actively trying to grow it (ie not even getting it trimmed for about 6 months now. I really want to get my layers back and lose a couple of inches of length after the wedding, but I probably won’t cut it all off…I had forgotten how much I love having long hair! :-)

My usual pattern is to grow my hair long and then donate it. The wedding is just making me keep it long, for a longer period of time than I usually would. After the wedding, I’m going to donate it again.

I realised at my brother’s wedding last year that getting good *up* hair with a chin length bob was not easy. I started growing it out then and it’s now past my shoulders! I’m not even engaged yet but it was certainly in my mind to consider how strange bobs and veils can look!!
Bring on the chignon and 1960s beehives. Love it.
PS all this is helped greatly by the fact that one of my BMs to be is a theatre wigs girl. GREAT for experimenting and free rollers!

My hair is now the longest it’s been in 8 years, and it’s not even touching my shoulders. I just smirk when someone says, “OMG, my hair is so short now, I can’t believe I cut it all off!” and it’s still past their shoulders. I’m like, “Try 2″ long altogether, and then it’s short.” I think I’ll keep letting it grow for a while, since I made it this far.

twelvetigers - I can apprecite your point of view, but a few years ago I cut about 20 inches off. My hair might have been long compared to yours, but it was still really, really short to me!

I’m growing out my hair right now…probably for the flowing curls look. :-)

Now that I’ve gone to the dark side (AKA my natural color) it grows freakishly fast, besides the fact that it’s long to begin with. ;-)

EVERYONE asks me if I’m growing out my short hair for the wedding — it’s chinlength. Heck no! But I appear to be in the minority.
