DIY Crayons

February 8th, 2007 @ 2:51 pm by Reader Email

Dear Weddingbee,

Recently in attempts to get rid of my old crayons in my classroom, I decided to melt them down in metal molds. I chose heart shaped molds because of the upcoming Valentine’s holiday. While watching my last batch cool, I realized that I could use this idea for the underaged guests at my wedding. I would alternate hearts and shell molds to go with my beach theme of course. I thought some of your diy brides might like the idea so I have enclosed pictures and how-tos. I hope the crayon idea works with your readers!

#1 gather old broken crayons

#2 put your broken pieces in a metal molding tray and bake away

#3 cool on a cold counter or put them in the fridge for awhile

#4 give the tray a little twist and these babies should pop right out! z744254

I love it! I’ve done this project before with kids but never thought of it as a favor idea for kids. . . hmm. Don’t forget step two - take the paper off!!

that is cute. i like it. that’d actually be a fun favor regardless of age. especially for me because i still enjoy coloring. are the pans completely done for after you melt the crayons in them? or are they salvagable.

Tea - I’ve got about 3 tins that I’ve used for this type of project and they’re all done for as in I wouldn’t use them for muffins anymore, although I guess you could potentially clean them out by freezing the bits and chipping them off, hardly worth it though.

You could also use silicon or disposable trays for this project. See the tips at http://72.14.209.104/search?q=cache:-vfe_4wxZX8J:jas.familyfun.go.com/crafts%3Fpage%3DCraftDisplayComments%26craftid%3D11585+disposable+mini-muffin+tins+shapes&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=3&gl=us

My mom used to do that with our old crayons! FUN! I too never thought of it as a wedding project but it can absolutely be used for the kids’ table. Great idea!

To clean up the trays, you could just pop them into the dishwasher and it should just wash off with the high temp! easy~

You can also use cookie cutters on a cookie sheet, putting the crayons within the cookie cutters.
