About Mrs. Blueberry

Minimoon

February 8th, 2007 @ 4:52 pm by Mrs. Blueberry

Last night Mr. Blueberry and I started talking about our minimoon. We’re taking one because we only have a few days between the wedding and when my summer semester starts, and we’ll also want a chance to recoup and save up some $$ before our “big” honeymoon next January.

We had been planning on going to Mackinac Island, in Michigan. But *somebody* never got around to booking it, so now it will just be a lot cheaper to go elsewhere. We’d been meaning to vacation to Chicago sometime, since it’s only about 3 hours from our college town and Mr. Blueberry has never really been, so now we’re thinking about making that our minimoon. I went a few years ago with my mom, and we had a ton of fun shopping, navigating the El (would you believe we didn’t get lost once?!), and going to all the museums–basically, anyplace we could go without driving .

When my mom and I went, we stayed at the Lenox Suites downtown and it definitely met our needs (and budget!), so that’s probably where Mr. Blueberry and I will stay on our minimoon. It was within walking distance of the big Marshall Field’s and Michigan Avenue.

If Mr. Blueberry and I go to Chicago for our minimoon, what are some “must-do’s? We’re already planning on hitting the Shedd aquarium, the science museum and art museum, the navy pier, and spending at least one day on Michigan avenue. But I’ve not been there since I turned 21, so I know next to nothing about the restaurant and bar scene.

Chicago readers, where are some great places to eat downtown? Any other awesome things we must do while we’re there?

I went to Chicago once on business…besides the obvious shopping on “the Millenium Mile”..there’s also the theaters downtown. I took in one night watching “Wicked” at the theater near Marshall Fields…it was fantastic!

If you’re thinking of renting a car, there’s the residence by Frank Loyd Wright to check out (I’m a bit of a FLW afficonado). Also, the Art Institute of Chicago is a great museum.

If you like tapas, one of the better places downtown is Cafe Iberico on Lasalle Street. It gets crowded fast so early dinner is always good. I would recommend “Wicked” too :) Also, all the Marshall Field stores are now Macy’s - boo :( - they got bought out. Everyone in Chicago was bummed. I can try to answer more specific questions if I can, though I am a bit of a suburbanite.

For a fun dinner spot I recommend Quartino on State and Ontario. They serve Italian small plates and are really reasonably priced for both food AND wine ;-). For better shopping than downtown (both boutiques and things you can’t find in every city) I recommend either the Halsted/Armitage area or the Southport Corridor. Have fun!

May, it’s the “Magnificent Mile.” :)

I grew up and am getting married in Chicago, but I haven’t lived there in years…a few ideas from what I remember/have heard from friends and visits home:

Restuarants/Bars:
Green Dolphin Street - jazz club/restuarant
Green Mill - former speakeasy, now lounge
Les Vosges - chocolate to DIE for!
Italian Village - restaurant in the Loop area; there are 3 levels, but the “Village” part is the best for the cheesiness factor!
Ann Sathers for brunch - cinnamon rolls the size of your head!
Gino’s East is the only pizza worth having, period. Uno’s and Due’s are to be avoided! (We Chicagoans are passionate about this topic!)

Sites:
Linclon Park Zoo and the Botanical Gardens are so great, and free! Also look into the Chicago Historical Society and Museum of Contemporary Art. You can try to get tickets for a White Sox or Cubs game, too.

In General:
Neighborhoods like Old Town, Bucktown, and Lincoln Park are worth researching for restaurants and bars.

Inevitably, people will tell you to go the 96th Floor, the restuarant at the top of the Hancock Building - go for a drink and the view, but don’t waste your money on the overpriced and disappointing food! They changed owners a few years ago, and…bleh.

For great ethnic restaurants, Little Italy and Greektown are great - hard to have a bad meal in either ‘hood.

Take an architectural boat tour on the river - spectacular!

There’s a huge ferris wheel at Navy Pier - I’ve never been on it, but it’s a big hit.

Whatever you do, don’t miss the Art Institute. Truly amazing, from the Miniature Rooms (my favorite!) to the Impressionist collection (largest one outside of Paris) to the Stock Exchange room…everything is wonderful!!!

One more thing - bring a jacket! :)

Sorry, May - that was Missy Jenn who said “Millenium.”

(No worries on that, really - FH calls it the Miracle Mile!) :)

Millenium Park is also a nice place to walk around. I notice your wedding is in May, so the weather here should be halfway decent (knock on wood). Maybe take a walk along the lakefront… oh yea, my favorite place for brunch is BONGO ROOM. YUMMY!!

YAY for Chicago Weddingbee readers!! =)

for after-dinner drinks, i think the john hancock building top floor (signature room) has the best atmosphere and view of the city (the view from the women’s bathroom is best.) http://www.signatureroom.com/

also you have to go on the architectural boat tours.

if you go to the art institute on tuesdays, it’s free.

deep dish pizza is also a must, gino’s east is good but if you’re not near one, the others are ok.

ooh, desserts at ghirardelli’s right across from john hancock is awesome.

the horse carriage rides are also fun ($40) when i went on nye.

greektown is open 24/7 and hits the spot for a night on the town. (i recommend the chicken philly, awesome.)

grand lux on mich ave is good, it’s the cousin restaurant of cheesecake fact.

and of course the shopping on the Mag mile and state (1 block or so east of mich ave).

hope you have fun, chicago is a GREAT city!

Grand Lux Cafe on Michigan Ave. (sit in the bar if you don’t want to wait - menu is the same)

Second City is a MUST — tons of famous alums, plus it’s super-cheap on weeknights

Millennium Park to walk around and take great photos

Architectural walking or boat tour (walking is cheaper)

A Cubs or White Sox game

A walk on the 20-mile lakefront path

Not trying to be snotty, but Navy Pier isn’t really NEAR anything else and is kind of so-so…I would skip it if pressed for time.

WICKED is great, I just saw it this weekend.

Brunch at either Orange or Ann Sather’s

Garrett’s popcorn

I went to Chicago for a long weekend my senior year with theater and so obviously we went to a lot of plays. I definetly suggest going to “Second City” if I remember correctly the tickets were reasonably priced and the show changes on a regular basis. I really enjoyed it. Have a ton of fun, even thought I’m only like 6 hours from Chicago I never get a chance to go there and I wish I could.

Chicago gal here…
Definitely skip Navy Pier…blah
Unless “Body Worlds” is still at Science & Industry, I’d skip that as well, it’s really not that exciting.
Thumbs up for the Art Institute, architecture tour on the boat, LP Zoo, and drinks in the Sig Lounge for the view.
For shopping take the Brown Line El to Armitage (Lincoln Park) or Southport (Lakeview/Wrigley) for more “neighborhood flavor” shopping/eating/drinking. They are both friendly safe ‘hoods. Fantastic BYOB Argentinian steak joint on Southport called Tango Sur.

Definitely do not miss Vosges! I used to live back east and would go there often. Now I’m in California, and my boss and I have to go to Chicago on a business trip, and she has already put Vosges on the agenda. :D
