Registry Concerns

February 8th, 2007 @ 1:13 pm by Mrs. Bee

Alessette sent in a link to this article about registry safety, that talks about how easy it is for a crook to access your address, gifts, credit, and more through your wedding registry.

The brides are often posting their wedding date, the location, and reception details on bridal registries. This is convenient for guests and for crooks. Now they know when the couples won’t be home. And when brides post pictures of their wedding party, they are also announcing other vacant homes.

Criddle says brides should be able to share their wedding news and wish lists without worry. There is one step they can take to protect themselves and their information: a password. On many sites, the password is optional, but Criddle says it should be mandatory.

It’s very easy to locate a registry online - I’ve found celebrity registries, and I’ve even had friends stalk registries to find out if old friends/enemies are engaged. I felt relatively safe registering with Bed Bath and Beyond, because identifying information other than our names and wedding date wasn’t shown. Still anyone can see what you’ve registered for.

Are you concerned at all about your personal information being accessed through your registry? Have you taken any steps such as limiting identifying information or creating passwords to protect yourself?

I’m all for safety, but I think this is taking a situation that won’t happen that frequently and blowing it out of proportion. Most thieves could also assume (with some accuracy) that many people wouldn’t be home on a given Saturday night, or that you wouldn’t be home on a holiday weekend or during standard business hours.

If someone really wants to know your address they could have always technically looked it up using county records or the phone book. That’s not a new piece of information.

Then again, we don’t have a lot of money or stuff, and we’re not registering for big items.

I am not too worried as I live in a very secure condo building with 24 hour security. We haven’t had any break-in issues.

on one hand, it makes sense. on the other, meh.

mary kay letourneau registered at williams-sonoma and did not protect with a password. had her address and everything on there. in the words of my brother, “not the smartest thing she’s done, but also not the dumbest.”

I agree with fizzy. It is so easy to get anyone’s address these days. I mean, head over to http://www.zabasearch.com. Putting it on a registry is really no different.

Also, I think there is more security concern with Knot bios and wedding websites, than there are with registry information. Just my opinion though.
