Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

Heirloom Veil

February 9th, 2007 @ 3:19 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Although my veil has been used once about eight years ago, I refer to it as an heirloom veil. It was my cousin (in law?) Karen’s veil from when she married my cousin Eric. Karen hails from England, and is seriously the sweetest person alive.

When I was mentally bemoaning my lack of anything “borrowed,” she offered me her veil. When I blogged about not having anything from a solid marriage to wear on my wedding day, she offered me her bracelet to wear - one her mother had given her for her wedding day.

It’s things like this that make you glad you have family who loves you. I know it must be killing my mom to not have anything to pass down to me, which is why I don’t ask. My mother didn’t have anything to remind her of my grandma - when she passed away my step-grandpa took all her things and locked my mom (who was a teenager) out of the house. In a way, my aunt (mom’s sister) is more of a grandma than an aunt. She’s always provided for me and given me things for no reason. Since my own paternal grandma passed away ten years ago, I’ve been floundering for some kind of sentimentality. I have nothing of my grandma’s and I was so close to her. I wish I had taken the opportunity to accept something of hers after she had passed, but I missed my chance. Now, all I have are memories of her.

Karen seemed to have noticed my need for something to use for the wedding, something that had meaning. So, she lent me her veil, with the forewarning that it’s nothing too expensive (I bought a 20 dollar veil on ebay- please!), but it was mine if I want it. Once I saw it I loved it, and once I put it on, I loved it more. Now, since I was looking a bit like a warthog when I tried it on, I will follow up with pictures of me IN the veil later- but now, here it is.

Ms. Kiwi:

Jo Gartin has a gorgeous wedding book with the following idea on how to honor loved ones who have gone before us.

Find a picture of your grandma, reducing the picture on a copier affix them to card stock front and back and tie them to your bouquet in lovely ribbon. This way, they can accompany you in spirit when you walk down the aisle… To get an idea of what I’m talking about, it’s on page 71 of Jo Gartin’s Weddings An inspiring guide for the Stylish bride.

I suggested doing something similar with my fiancee, but instead of it being on my bouquet, it will be on the bouquet of roses we offer to the Virgin Mary in the mass (We’re both Catholic!)
