Open Question: How Many Dresses?

February 9th, 2007 @ 12:40 pm by Open Question

Dear weddingbee,

Please help! I’ve searched high and low, near and far, and scoured every inch of the internet looking for the perfect dress.

I blogged about it at the beginning of my dress-hunt, and I’ve spent every weekend (and even some weeknights) since then visiting all sorts of bridal salons and dress shops.

So, I finally found the perfect dress. Well, almost. I just found out that my dream dress only comes in ivory!!!

What to do?! I am so tired of dress shopping, but I REALLY wanted a white dress. Should I keep looking? I have looked at hundreds (if not thousands) of dresses online, and I’ve tried on at least 30 of them.

How many dresses did you have to try on until you found “the one?”

Thanks for your help!

I tried on four, but unlike some brides-to-be I strangely never felt particularly strongly about my dress.

Unless you are attached to white for a particular reason (i.e. the symoblism, rather than the color), I think that in the end most brides may care more about the fit and style of the dress than the color, both because it is what truly shows in photos and because it affects your comfort level the most.

On the other hand, if you are supremely attached to white and the symbolism it carries, AND you are an extremely dedicated shopper (some women are, even at your stage in dress shopping), then keep shopping. You might find one that’s worth it. You could also take a picture of your dream dress to a good seamstress and see how possible it would be to re-create it in white.

Different from you, I wanted IVORY. :) White made me look yellow. Haha. So I tried on probably 5 gowns, and found the right one. Of course, it was in white, so I ordered it in ivory. But if I were you, I’d probably look around a little more and then get the ivory if it’s perfect in every other way. Which dress is it?

I looked at about 5 wedding mags (which all seemed to have the same ads) and i did not really like anything that much. I went to Mark Ingram here in NYC for an appointment and found my dress that night. Probably tried on 10.

I went to 11 stores and tried on over 100 dresses! (I realize I’m extremely anal). I found the “best one” and stopped looking. Because NOTHING fit correctly, I didn’t fall in love with anything. There came a point when I realized that I had to just pick the one I liked the most and move on- which is what I did. I’m also glad I waited until I explored all my options before doing so because it was at the 10th store that I found my dress.

With regards to the white-vs-ivory question, I would look at the dress and hold it up to the color your fiance or bridesmaids will be wearing. In many cases an ivory dress looks white when it’s not next to something bright white.

Since I live in a college town with only bridal shop (that is out of my price range), I was only able to look online at dresses for a while. So, I had a really good idea of what I wanted going to try on dresses for the first time and I ended up only trying on one and finding The One.

Have no fear, I honestly tried on over 40 dresses. I am a pro at putting crenoline on and getting in and out of the dresses. I finally found “the one”. I wasn’t sold on it but when my best friend and mom started crying on how beautiful I looked I knew. Now, it is at home and I secretly try it on when my fiance isn’t home… I can’t wait to wear it. So hang in there, ivory is so similar to white that maybe it will grow on you, plus add the accessories and it makes the whole look come together. Good Luck!

I feel your pain! I tried on over 80 gowns, and the one I finally chose was ivory, although I really wanted white. White just doesn’t look good on a lot of skin tones, so ivory may be more flattering anyways. And unless it’s a dark, cream ivory, no one will be able to tell when you’re wearing it. Step away from looking and shopping for a couple days and see which dress you keep thinking of.

Scary to admit, I visited 20 boutiques in SoCal and tried on around 130 gowns. Come on, I tried on close to 80 prom dresses, I had to beat that right?! =)

i went to about a half dozen stores and tried on over 100 dresses. in one store, i just went up and down the row, trying them all on.

ultimately, i had to compromise on my dress. I got the dress i wanted in the color mom and sister wanted. but really, i didn’t — and don’t — think it was the worse thing that could happen.

I love ivory. Are you sure it’s really a deal breaker for you?

whats weird is i think i found my dress and i havent even tried a single one on yet. i found it online at a store thats only in north carolina (im in texas) but ive sent the link to my mom and my sister (the only people who will see it before THE DAY) and i think about it every time i envision my wedding day. its got all the details i love and the price is unbeatable.

i know that its silly to order it without considering other dresses, especially because i look forward to shopping with my family and waiting for them to cry over how beautiful i am :-D so, when i go to try dresses on, i’ll try dresses with the same neckline, train, etc. as the one i like online, to make sure it does flatter my body.

thanks so much for all your input, ladies! whew, i’m glad to know i’m not a total freak =P

the ivory dress is the pronovias lonja. (i can’t find a link directly to the dress, but it’s in the 2007 “why not” collection at http://www.pronovias.com/) it’s soft and flowy with just the right amount of sparkle. it also has straps, which is my preference. it’s very “me”. i’d say it’s my dream dress.

but because i always thought i wanted a white dress (i’m still trying to figure out if that’s really important to me or not) i continued looking. so, i found the maggie sottero antonia http://www.maggiesottero.com/dress.aspx?pageSize=8&style=A3000. the skirt is fuller than i’d prefer, but i can have it altered. i can also have spaghetti straps added. but it comes in white! i’m going to try it on tomorrow.

a couple of friends pointed out that i get really dark in the summertime, and with my skin tone i would look better in ivory. it’s a softer color and won’t get washed out in photos, especially outdoors in the sunlight. i dunno, maybe i’m just rationalizing =P

I went to 5 wedding stores. When I tried my 15th dress, I knew it was what I was looking for. I fell in love with it and immediately ordered the dress. I think you know it’s the dress for you because there is no doubt in your mind and you just kept stop thinking about it =).
