String Around My Finger?

February 9th, 2007 @ 9:29 am by Mrs. Peach

Soooo to get myself ready, I just recently started taking birth control pills. It’s been about 4 days and so far I haven’t experienced any of the side effects, so that’s been good. A problem, however, has been that I have a hard time remembering to take it! Especially at the same time every day.

I decided I’d take mine at noon everyday, since 5 out of 7 days a week I’m always eyeing the clock at work for lunch time. I thought that it’d be easy to remember that way. But it’s actually been quite difficult! On the second day, we were going out for someone’s birthday and I almost left my pill at my desk. I had to run upstairs and take it before I went out. And then today! Today, I had a conference call (during my lunch hour!) and I didn’t remember until later, about 2pm. Gahhhhh, if I take it 2 hours late, is it really that big of a deal?

Anyhow yeah… I’m starting to get worried about future mishaps, especially when it will matter most! Maybe I should keep a string tied around my finger as a reminder…

Has anyone else have problems remembering to take the pill? Any tricks on how to remember better?

this was a major problem for me; i switched to the patch.

however, if you have a pda, blackberry or cellphone, or use outlook calendar, set it as a daily reminder.

You’ll get better at it! I’ve been on it for years, it just becomes part of your life. I take mine in the morning with whatever I’m having for breakfast. If there’s something you do every day, keep them there so you see it and remember! (i.e., in the cupboard with the mugs, etc.)

You also get used to it. Build it into your daily routine as you would washing your face or moisturizing. Do you go to bed at the same time everynight? (I do, 11:00 I’m a pumpkin!). I’ve been on the pill for years now and sexually active for a while and while I generally take it at around the same time everyday, I’m not 100% perfect. Most types (check the insert) will say that it will keep its 99.9% efficiancy rate even if you forget it one night and have to take two the next. More than one night of forgetting it and you may want to have some condoms on hand or just tell the hubby you have a headache ;-)

Good luck, I promise it gets easier. It’s like starting any habit, it takes a few months to really get into the swing of things and making it automatic.

taking it at night right after i brush my teeth helps me remember. the pill package sits right next to the toothpaste!

I take it every night before I go to bed. It sits on my night stand next to the bed right beside the alarm clock. So when I go to make sure the alarm is set for the next day they are right there.
It will take some getting used to remeber them every night/day.

put them by your bedside, and take it right b4 go you to bed. i remember my doctor recommended taking the pill at night to avoid the nausaeting side effect because i would be sleeping.

I take mine first thing in the morning, it’s in the bathroom cabinet and I take it as after I bruch my teeth. It’s easy, you wouldn’t want to forget to brush your teeth :-) you should try to take it at the same time, but I don’t think an hour or two difference makes a big difference ( might depend on pill). Check with your doc. Oh, and make sure you continue taking it same time when you travel and change time zones. that’s a bit tricky, because all of a sudden your morning routine becomes lunch. It gets better as you go along. Good luck !

i take my at noon everyday as well. i always keep my pills in my purse so they are with me wherever i am at and i set the alarm on my phone to go off everday at noon to remind me. It works since i always have my phone on me as well. it will become a habit after some time. and don’t worry if you are off my a few hours just take it as soon as you realize you forgot it.

I hate taking pills as it is and having to take them everyday was just a bit much for me. I opted for the Nuva Ring & it’s worked very well for me.

I had this problem and even 20-30 minute variance a few days a week really messed up my cycle–which led me to fear they weren’t effective. If you keep on having an issue with time I HIGHLY recommend Nuvaring. It’s super easy to use and you can’t feel it at all–plus no remembering to take a pill everyday.

I’m the same as Miss Orchid - Nuva Ring has worked great for me! And you only have to worry about not forgetting something 2 times a month. :-)

I also take it every night. My dh will ask if I’ve taken it sometimes, because it’s just as important for him for me to take it! And I’ve been taking it for 7 years (started for health reasons at age 16) and it will truely become a habit after a while.

I don’t take the last week of them since they are just placebos (sp?), but for the first year or so, I did, to help form the habit.

Good luck!

i consulted a doctor and pharmacist about this, the effectiveness doesn’t go down if you are off by a couple of hours so if you’re supposed to take it at 12 but didn’t until 1 or 2 that shouldn’t be a problem, i set my cell phone to remind me every morning when i wake up to take the pill, and that works out pretty good for me…

Nuvaring is great! I don’t suffer any of the side-effects (like emotional insanity) that I got with even low dose pills. I highly recommend it!

When I first went on bc I asked the doctor about all the other options, because I figured I’d have a hard time remembering to take it every day around the same time. I looked into the shot (you actually have to take a calcium pill every day so that didn’t help), the seasonale where you only get four periods a year (again, still taking a pill every day) and the nuvaring (I had a friend who was getting the most debilitating, awful urinary tract infections and she kept having them for a while until they figured out it was her ring - I’m already prone to UTIs so again no dice). After all was said and done the good ol’ ortho-tricyclen-lo was the best route for me.

Since I was in college, I was setting my cell phone alarm for a time when I wasn’t in class everyday. Plus, my FH and I went to lunch every weekday, and slept in til lunchtime every weekend(!) so that was a good time for me. But now that I don’t do anything at the same time twice in a week, I’ve adjusted to taking it before I go to bed, because even if there’s a few hours difference, it’s within a certain window, plus when I go to bed I reflect on my day and that usually reminds me if I’ve forgotten. On the info that comes with the pill it says if you want to change the time of day you take it, don’t change it by more than three hours at a time, so I figure three hours is the window of time you have to work with.

I would suggest using another form on top of that if you are really that worried. I’ve been on the pill for two years and we still use condoms too. Partly so my FH is as much in charge of bc as I am, and partly because I’m really paranoid at getting pregnant before I plan it. (The way I figure it, we are so safe that if we did wind up getting pregnant, I know my child would cure cancer or something else magnificent!)

I have a daily reminder for myself on my phone and my Palm; yes, two alarms, just in case!

I, too, recommend Nuva-Ring. I had a hard time remembering to take the pill, even after a couple of years. Just remember, though, that the Nuva-Ring is new, so they don’t have a lot of data yet on whether or not it will make it that much harder for all of us on it to get pregnant when we are ready to try. Life is so ironic sometimes: now I rejoice every month that I’m not pregnant, but I know in a couple of years getting my period will make me so sad.
